V2.5 Survival Revival Dev Diary

Truthfully I probably missed a lot of things in the game. Never concentrated
on rewards or the achievements. I get a bit wrapped up in, traveling across
the map to see how my painted landscape plays out and what can be done better.

This version especially, it inspires me, to do a bit more crafting, racing the
storms, using bait traps. There is no set path, so I wander as far as I can. I
did notice one thing that I don't remember happening before, swimming in water
has less friction once you stop stroking. So I have actually started reading
outside of editing and modding and painting.

I missed the fact that the Lever action rifle was in the game for years. Until I was
told recently. Just busted my butt to craft one yesterday, happy days.

Fighting feels more fluid to me now, I actively switch between, melee ranged and
spikes in almost every fight. The way the food and water have been redone, it plays
perfectly into going far and through multiple biomes, then having to return, no straight
paths, mostly offroad, 4k feels like 20.

Now I have one thing I want to do or get, I "need" binoculars, I may try to mod a set
unless I can find a mod for one. I "need" a set, trying to manually find all of the
traders.

Best for me is I am nearly finished building my computer, so I can reinstall my theflood mod.
I didn't build it for the game, it' for an ai project, but the game will benefit from it also.
I build a computer every 9 or 10 years. This new one should last for the next generation of 7days
and New releases.

It's often like watching an episode of The Wonder Years when I read your posts. 🤔😛

(Skip the binoculars, and go with the gyrocopter).

💀

no need for binoculars , though they would be cool , 8x scope is fine. realistically by the time you could make binocs in the game you can make a scope or buy one.
Even at maximum settings, most things don't "show" at great distance, I've loved binoculars in other similar games (miscreated, warz, infestation, dayz, h1z1) and would love them in this game but they'd not be that useful tbh.

(Skip the binoculars, and go with the gyrocopter).
Tried it before a few times. It kind of throws discovery in the circular file for me. Half of my playthrough
is discovering the different areas and pois as I search for the traders, kind of an apocalyptic where's Waldo
or Waldina with zombies. The way I design my worlds it makes them feel bigger, the speed and unobstructed
view from a gyro make it feel smaller. When I design the terrain, I don't post POIs so I often teleport, fly, and run
to see so I can get an idea of how the natural terrain configuration, either helps hampers of redirects progressive
movement. The best vehicle for my maps would be an Mx dirt bike, I plan to use the vehicle mod to test it, but for
now I'm just enjoying playing, using my bicycle.
The gravity and physics is getting closer to something I want to design a map around. Natural jumps over gorges,
half pipes, and stair step cliff jumps, all while surviving an apocalypse. A visual is the opposite of level, with an
elevated range, separating the areas. I miss SSX3.
8x scope is fine.
I actually tried it as a test, while doing a dissimilar test earlier, it could work, I would like it to bypass
the LOD if possible, just to be able to see the flag at least. But they don't render beyond approx 140
meters. When making quick head swivels, that might as well be 2 miles. I passed a trader Hugh multiple
trips, by that distance because he is in an area that i don't usually stop to rest. Gotta watch for mines AKA
Buzzard bait.

Dear TFP,
going into source of water after every meal is not the survival mechanics game lacked. Thank you
Why would you do that? Smell really has so little impact unless you are eating while surrounded, it doesn't matter. It's an increase to your chances of being attacked if, and only if, there are zombies nearby who are spawned and not sleeping. Otherwise, it has zero effect and is nothing more than a visual thing. I completely ignore it. The only thing I do is put away any raw meat I find so I'm not constantly drawing in zombies. But I eat whenever I need to without even bothering to look around me to see if there are zombies nearby, including when doing tier 6 infested quests, and it has never been a problem.

Hello, update 2.5 is the best thing I've played in a long time.

I regret that Fun Pimps focuses too much on exploration and scavenging; it needs to be balanced, stick to the basics. Sometimes we like to play in a relaxed mode, devs...
I regret that almost all the maps have the same elevation on flat ground. The snow should be higher, even without mountains.
We should at least have this biome to safely burrow into with our forges, etc.

I don't like the RWG map; it's bad. I preferred the older versions.

I really appreciated Valheim's comfort system and their smoke-suffocating system if the room doesn't have an exhaust vent. I'd like to be able to use ovens and refrigerators, etc., with electricity and a food spoilage system.
In short, I want a survival game, not an RPG excuse to insert outdated game mechanics that have been obsolete for 10 years.
My only regret is the lack of a mix of text and hands-on learning.
I loved the 600-level weapons with four parts to assemble.

I don't understand why, in a zombie game, we aren't rats or other animals are zombies.
There's a lack of specialized workbenches, a real work and construction area. Cooking is the same; we're still cooking over a wood fire like in prehistoric times at the end of the game...
I want real spider zombies capable of hiding in corners and on the ceiling, and able to climb like before.

More special zombies.

The skill tree is a good idea, but I'd like to have separate classes for base building, repair, and construction, in addition to weapon skills. The mummy and the grizzly bear are rare zombies, and I would have preferred them.

I don't understand why a cowboy zombie hides bees; the mummy would have made more sense, and the same goes for the grizzly bear...
The game has become a poorly executed mix of everything.
I'm not in a hurry to get the bandits (I'm very afraid of the result).
When I saw the roadmap, I was very, very disappointed. I hope the game stays in alpha for decades because, in my opinion, it's seriously lacking in mechanics and content.
Many are looking for a replacement because it's missing what we were originally looking for.

Before, I used to play for 100, 200, 300 days, I loved building... Now, I'm stuck with 4 hordes, and even then I'm forcing myself, and I'm fed up.
Even horde day has become a chore to play, whereas before I loved preparing my base for the horde on day 7.

I've forgotten some things, but if this could happen, it would be my wish. Best of luck to the team that's making sure we have the best game possible. Keep up the good work.

Hello @faatal

I was curious... Can we expect a 2.6 Experimental anytime soon?
I'm actually looking forward to the stuttering fix; was it fully tested and working? Or more work needs to be done on it?

It can't come soon enough, performance on Xbox series X is absolutely woeful since the 2.5 patch. Just did the day 28 horde with 16 enemies and it was pretty much a slide-show - prior to 2.5 it wasn't that great but i could at least manage it even with 64 enemies, now it's more or less unplayable past mid-game, tier 5 infested's are a no-go.

It's the same on PC; the FPS drops are incredible, even with a recent mid-range PC. So I don't even want to imagine your struggles with this game.
This game has always been poorly optimized.
It's definitely not their strong point.
I think the optimization is getting worse and worse. Before Alpha 16, it was so good; since the game has become a 7-day read, it's a disaster.
In 2026, there will be a big batch of real survival games coming out. Can't wait, because 7 DAYS TO DIE has been broken for too long.

On PC it’s a complete mess. I don’t even go into big cities anymore when I change biomes, I only look for small towns. I generally have stable fps, but it often drops hard.
I’m not even playing on high graphics settings just enough so the game doesn’t look bad.
I’ve tested all graphics settings and it’s always the same. There’s constant fps drop that shows up from time to time, or even more often when the game is loading multiple objects/chunks at once.
Playing with friends makes it even more frustrating.
My PC isn’t bad, so I really shouldn’t be having these problems.

Lets see what you've got. Please post your PC specs.
Im playing on a laptop with very low graphics settings, with some settings on medium, and all shadows turned off, except for shadow quality, which is set to low so that rooms are dark(brightness on 0). Even with these settings, I still experience significant FPS drops, especially in cities, and occasional stuttering. I feel like this laptop should run the game better. Perhaps someone has an idea of what could be wrong or what I could change or upgrade, since not everything in this laptop is soldered and some components might be upgradable, and I would like to get as much performance out of it as possible. And there are some really cool key updates coming in the game.

For now, I’m not planning to buy a PC yet, but I probably will later this year, maybe by the end of the year.

Lodbias setting is aggressively low that's why.

we also didn't have super smart zombies in A16, they don't give an option to turn that off. I'd rather have a horde of dumb zombies than 8 super smart that cause me stutter because they're trying to collapse the house.

I miss a16 zombies.

For reference, laptops are not the best option for PC gaming, especially games that require either a lot of GPU or a lot of CPU (this game requires a lot of CPU). You can get laptops that can handle it, but you need to be aware of what you're getting or you're likely to have one that can't handle it.

As far as those specs go, 16GB RAM is acceptable, but not great. Whenever you use up that 16GB, you're going to be running the memory off the hard drive, which is much slower. And the RAM is only DDR4, which doesn't help. The GPU RAM is also not great (I also have 4GB, though). This game doesn't need as much GPU as other games, so it's not critical, but having more GPU RAM would be a good thing for other games. The CPU is not bad for gaming, but can be a problem in some laptops (especially really thin laptops) and can lead to throttling due to power and heat.

In any case, there are different things that you may be experiencing...

  • The game currently has a camera motion issue that will be fixed in the next update that makes your motion on a vehicle "stutter" or "jerk" or "rubberband" (depending who you ask). This isn't an FPS issue and is just poor camera motion.
  • At higher speeds, such as on a motorcycle with a supercharger, the game can struggle to load chunks fast enough in a larger city depending on your computer. I have this myself. The effect you see with this is stuff loading very closely in front of you, making it easy to crash into things like cars on the road since you can't see them until you're almost at them, or even loading slowly enough that you hit a barrier and can't move forward until it finishes loading the chunk. This isn't an FPS issue, but is instead just a loading performance issue. It may show a drop in FPS, but that's more of a side effect of the computer trying to load the chunks fast enough.
  • Actual FPS drops, where you are standing still and just slowly looking around at different textures. There are certain textures in the game that can cause FPS drops, though a good computer can prevent that from happening. These drops may not even be noticed unless you are running the game at over 60FPS. FPS drops are usually more noticeable at higher FPS. Since you are using a 144Hz monitor, that may be part of your problem. If you cap your FPS to a lower value, you may not see the drops anymore. I have a 60Hz monitor and I still cap my FPS to 30 in this game. Although I can get 60FPS in the game a lot of the time, letting it go that high means I also get noticeable drops. By limiting it to 30, I'm almost always at 30 and so I don't see drops often. And 30 still looks good, imo. Certainly better than seeing large FPS fluctuations. You may even find that you can increase your graphics settings after limiting the FPS. I think a lot of people who complain about FPS drops are running the game on 144Hz or higher monitors and not capping the FPS, while most people without problems are using 60Hz monitors. It's one of those cases where better isn't always better. ;)
Things that may help if you have performance problems:

  • Uninstall bloatware from your computer if you haven't already.
  • Close all other programs while playing the game.
  • Don't use the various utility programs that are supposed to improve performance when gaming as many of those actually make things worse. You can test with and without if you want to see if something you use helps or makes things worse, though.
  • Limit (cap) your FPS.
  • Try FSR or DLSS.
  • Lower your resolution.
Those are just some things you can try. I can't say exactly what will work for you, but this may help. For reference, I play the game on a desktop that was a mid level gaming PC about eight years ago (so not that great now) that I only increased RAM and added a new SSD to, and I don't really have a noticeable issue with FPS drops when I cap my FPS to 30. I have my graphics mostly set to High in the game and am running at 1080p. I do have the first 2 issues I mentioned (chunk loading at higher speeds and the camera issue), but other than those, I can play the game without stuttering or anything like that even with a full horde with multiple players or in the center of a large city when doing a tier 6 infested quest. So it is definitely possible to play the game on PC without problems, depending on your hardware and settings. Just need to figure out what to set things to. :)

I'm not an expert, but I've always heard that laptops are not good gaming rigs because of the heating "limits".
Since the console can easily deliver high and stable performance in other very demanding games, it seems logical that the problem lies with 7 Days to Die itself. Many players complain that the game stutters under certain circumstances. I’m not an expert, but issues like this shouldn’t occur on hardware of this class. I don’t know exactly what class of PC a console like the PS5 would be comparable to, but the current situation can make it seem as if the console is too weak to maintain stable performance unless the game is simply poorly optimized for consoles, but is that really the case?
I only have a mid-range laptop, but I’ve played Cyberpunk 2077 with really nice graphics and without major stutters. I also played Spider-Man Remastered (2018) with high-quality graphics I’m not sure how demanding it is, but it looks great. I played Red Dead Redemption 2 at very stable 60 FPS with high-quality visuals, and I had no performance issues in The Last of Us Part II. I’ve also played Ready or Not and other demanding games. Overall, I’ve played all of these titles with very nice graphics without any major problems.
I understand that 7 Days to Die has a huge map, a lot of elements in every POI and on every street, and also a large number of zombies, but still, it seems like it should run better. Because of all this, it feels like the issue is with the game itself rather than my hardware.

Zombie animals are outside the general zombie lore and I'm glad it's as limited as it is in this game. Right now you got the dog, the bear, the dire wolf and the vulture and I think that's more than enough. You start venturing beyond that and it's gonna get corny. Thank god they got rid of that stupid bee.

The Yeti (or grizzly bear, as you call it) was a bad idea. Zombies are more or less a grounded horror genre. The Yeti is a mystical fantasy creature and was way out of place.

As for the "mummy", I partially agree. I thought the Plague Spitter was an excellent dried out desert zombie model. But neither the Plague Spitter nor the Rancher makes much sense as bee spitters...UNLESS bees turned their heads into beehives like in the Walking Dead World Beyond. I am planning on releasing the Plague Spitter back into the game as a mod, but as a normal zombie. I tried adding a beehive to his face and breast, chest, neck and head, but I'm not a skilled modeler so it didn't turn out so good and I abandoned the idea...for now.

As for exploration and scavenging...go buy things from the trader if you don't want to look for them.

I understand that 7 Days to Die has a huge map, a lot of elements in every POI and on every street, and also a large number of zombies, but still, it seems like it should run better.
Of course it should. I didn't say the game is perfectly optimized and that it's because of your computer that it runs badly.
But you probably felt attacked for some reason and ignored my point.

Even a measly console has much better ventilation than your laptop, sorry to burst your bubble. The games you listed are not comparable with 7D2D because this game is CPU-intensive. When all you do is "paint" on screen a static map, as complex as you want, it's still something that's handled by the GPU, not by the CPU. So, having a good graphics card is of uttermost importance.

7D2D however, does a huge amount of calculations and stuff that is NOT graphical. That's why the CPU can easily overheat and that's why poor ventilation on your computer is a factor. That's why I said what I said.

Edit: I'm not an expert... but I've learned a lot of stuff outside of my expertise in my life. ;)

No, the problem of 7D2D is that it uses voxels and the whole world can be changed instead of the usual fixed thin walls of small fixed triangels that games like Cyberpunk are using.

Almost all games use a technique where the world is created as a collection of flat polygons and rendered as millions of small triangels. GPUs and graphics libraries like Unity were optimized for this technique for 40 years now. Very very few games use different techniques because when you do you have to programm everything from scratch and the best way is to translate whatever you are using back to polygons where the normal rendering starts and you can profit at least partly from the 40 years of optimizations and software and hardware that only wants to raster polygons and nothing else.

So whatever voxel processing you have has to be done on top of the normal 3D processing of other games and is much less optimized. Worse, that translation probably has to be done partly by the CPU instead of the GPU, and the CPU is really bad at doing a lot of things in parallel, compared to the GPU
