PC V3.0 Dead Hot Summer Dev Diary

These were also requested to be vanilla features by those on PC. It’s nice not having to mod my game for simple sandbox changes.

I've never understood this mentality. Read this in your best "um actually" nasally voice. "Omg these LAZY developers are adding in features that have been a part of popular mods for years. I demanded for these to be added every single day, begging, pleading, praying, but this is a lack of originality and these features should NEVER have come to the base game. It's laziness and nobody asked for them. The devs don't know what the players want."

Directed to the person you were responding to, btw. :)

I think there is already an option (in 3.0) to "produce" empty jars at 0%. What is the difference between that, and what you're asking for?

Is it merely to remove jars from loot? Or removing jars from recipes? I could see those being options, but realistically, they seems like minor concerns to me.
Yes, that was there in 2.5/2.6 as well. It's not the same thing. When set to 0%, you don't recover empty jars when using jars, but you still have to use jars in the dew collector and there was talk about the apiary, though I don't know if that was added. You still find them in loot as well. Option A is to completely remove them so they aren't in loot and aren't required for use anywhere (dew collector, etc.).

@faatal Is the new sandbox options menu ready so that a relatively simple mod can add tabs and options with new ideas? And would saving and sharing presets work at the same time? That would be wonderful
From what they were saying in the dev stream, I'm not sure that they want to allow people to mod the available options. They said that doing so would mess up the codes for options and they want codes to be valid no matter what mods are being used.

It is a bit late in the game for me to post this thought but. I had often wished that there
was one amorphic station, that as you progressed, you added parts to it, and it would,
graphically adjust, kind of like adding a pot and grill changes the campfire. It would have
started with a small footprint and as you added it would grow into a single multipurpose
station.

Don’t make eye contact.
look up and make eye contact
I love the new (to me) magnitude and combine system! But can we find a better name for the workstation? Combine Station is awkward and uninspiring? How about one of these?

* Fusion Forge
* Synthesis Station
* Transmutation Station
should be an extension that u attach to workbench, or near it.

So is this very old build of the game not the same experimental build you’re letting streamers get access to this weekend? He said “bandits hidden in 3.0” on that video—make it seem like he did have experimental access—just wondering how he’s able to show us on YouTube (very old build) bandits before you all unveiled them.

I’ll pull back the curtain a bit. Streamers were given access to a build before the event, with strict rules not to post any content before the event began. This is normal. It’s done so that they can plan and prepare their streams to create the best content possible (download the build, generate a world, get it running on dedicated servers, test and tweak settings, do these things while awake across worldwide time zones, etc.).

Edit: Suffice it to say it was not intended for streamers, and by extension viewers, to see that b205 build with bandits. The focus is on the new features & content that players will get to experience in V3. But what happened happened, and the devs don’t see it as productive to remove footage that’s already been seen.

So… yes, the devs were caught working on bandits. Now, how about those sandbox options? :)

Guys, reminder to everyone (including me):

WHEN YOU ASK TO ADD NEW OPTIONS, CHECK FIRST IF IT'S A NEW FEATURE INSTEAD!

Example: "can you add an option to toggle if water is present in the world or not?"
(that's something that would need work on the world generator!)
Yeah, many option requests are actually feature requests. We have a running joke about that.

Features can have options, but you can't have options without the features!

The first time the player uses this station, I think they should earn an achievement named C-C-C-COMBO MAKER.

You would need to mod code to do that. Half of those letters convert into an enum for which option it is. A code mode could add to the enum and change the various functions that handle it and make code array entries that define the choice and modify the code in a system to apply that choice.

Now when we release more options, we will add more enums which will conflict with the enum the mod added. The mod could pick a high number for their enum like 300, which we would not get to for a while, but another mod could still conflict with it.

This is messy for modders to do, which is what Lathan was trying to say before. Keeping codes short needs the data condensed down this way. We would be better off with some UI listing mods, enable/disable and choices for each mod, but I don't know when we get to that.

FYI: There are two issues I have since fixed that are in the streamer weekend builds.

Fixed animal and zombie heads not looking at the target and having a large performance cost (25 living zombies would drop my FPS by 10 from that bug).

Fixed loot abundance categories set to values other than 0% or 100% were not handling fractional counts accurately.

These fixes will be in future builds.

Not right now. I have thought about making them a rare-ish quest reward or loot room item.
Will have to talk to Madmole and see what he thinks about it.

Would it be possible to make broken vending machines lootable? They could give the player a small assortment of canned goods, drinks, and/or candy. Maybe throw in some empty jars or something to mix up the loot table.
