How far have you gone this playthrough?

When I got day 80 or so I decided to make a showcase home base (not horde). I have all the cool tools at this point and was looking for something to do.

I wanted a large picture-window in a cliff face with living quarters behind it. I'm am using the "Gyro to Heli" mod from Immortalis so I have vertical takeoff and landing capability. So another base feature is a large automatic door in the top of the base (made up of drawbridges) through which the "helicopter" can be landed. This is the primary way to access the base.

The base is situated in the excavated top of a mountain in the snow biome.

Here is a base tour from day 93:
Cool base. But why the snow?

What I did was add a lot of lights but behind plates. The first image show that the lights can always be brought closer to the floor by just adding a tiny pole or multiple poles and creating a base for the light with a plate or plates. I wanted to get indirect light via GI, but its still just direct and the engine could not do GI without killing FPS. It still looks OK though.

I made it, but I need to upgrade before day 35. My eyes are hurting (again) so Need to take a break for a bit.
Why don't you make a video via Steam or FRAPS. Assuming you are playing on PC of course. You do not need a channel on YouTube to upload videos. I use YouTube Studio (whatever that is) and just create a unlisted link here in the forums. Please make a video!

Also, i usually just get to say bloodmoon 21:30 and quit to take a break. So if your eyes hurt, just save right before bloodmoon starts and get to it later.

Electric fences and rocket launcher. Love it!
I hate to say it, but at 200% block damage and the highest 64 spawns on bloodmoon, these guys do not stand a chance. what you see is the outer wall, the inner walls have dual shotgun turrets in between pointing at each other while in more electric fences and like 80 blade traps with a dedicated SMG turrets pointing out at the blade traps. Its ridiculous, and way overkill. But this will be my last base for a while. I have run out of ideas and I am going to put the game up for a while (maybe a couple years even) soon.

I used to use Fraps, doesn't work on my computer/7dtd. I now use something called OBS, but a full 36 minute Horde Night video is to big for my YouTube. If I try the "YouTube Studio", is it a free tool? Is it easy to understand/install/use?

I might try a single hour of my next horde night (day 35), but that will still be a 6 minute video using OBS. Keep in mind, I have bad eyesight, and my fingers twitch often, so things that should be easy-peasy, for me, end up with much verbal abuse of the poor zombies.

When I went to the hospital in Feb, 2021 for my initial bout with congestive heart failure, I didn't know what the heck that even was. By june/july, I was riding my bicycle to/from the heart doctor (6 mile round trip), but that didn't actually work out, as they wanted to check my blood sugar twice each visit, and thus poking holes in my fingers, during covid, while using their exercise equipment, on the premise that the tiny, short exercise I was going to be doing might cause my blood sugar to drop dangerously low. I was like, hmmm, 5 minutes on the treadmill, which is somehow, in the imagination of the doc's, going to be dangerous for my body, vs 2 hours on a bike, in the hot summertime heat.

In 2023, I had my first stroke, and was about to leave, before they finally got an opening to do the brain image test. The whole 'treatment' that I got that visit was being sat in a chair out in the hallway, with sick folks coming and going all around me, and they thought I would spend the night there. I was like, when I finish my burger, I'm heading home, with or without the test. I finished my burger, went to the restroom, and was about to head home, when they "suddenly" had room for me to take the test. In 2024, I had two more strokes, and didn't bother going in, as thy wouldn't actually be doing anything, anyway.

I made it through all of 2025 without any major health issues, but this year, 2026, started off on the wrong foot, and by Feb 2nd, I had already been in hospital twice.

Anyway, all that being said, I have nerve and brain damage, that results in twitching of arms/legs/fingers, and that throws off my aim a bit. In compensation for my reduced health, I took away all the ranged attacks from the zombies. No more "spit-in-my-eyes", they just have to hit me with melee attacks, as I have to do to them. Fun times.

Latest play session, I got to...

Day 32, 0859 hrs. I'm 64th level, and have 2,326 kills.

Day 32, 2012 hrs.

Spent the day fixing the goof I made with my farm building, got the blueprints for the farm building updated, and then, saw a way to make it better, so did a second update to the blueprint image file, and got part of that work done on the real building.

Farm building.jpg

This is how I do the blueprints for my buildings.

The 2 red boxes represent the outside door, and the inter-floor ladder. The Pink boxes are "open grid" cubes for letting the light into the interior. Light gray are floors/walls, while dark gray represent the structural support columns. The 5 Orange boxes are where I hung lanterns, so I can see my crops growing even at night. In light green, I have each 'bay' is 7 X 13, for a total of 91 farm plots, but I'll be taking the 5 farm plots out from under the lanterns, to give 90/bay, 450/floor.

With the improvements, I will have 5 farming bays, each of 90 farm plots, and each floor can be exact copies of the ones above/below. Last game, I hit 300th level and quit, and never got the third floor completed. This game, I have not yet finished the first floor, but I am only 64th level right now.

I can only seem to get a single day in in a play session, so I will need 3 more play sessions to reach day 35.

You should try team play. Your base is well set-up for that.
I tried multiplayer in Half Life 2 Deathmatch and Day of Defeat Source and it did not work well. Guys were all screwing with me. So after that I decided "No Multiplayer Gaming". Also this base was a usual design that I have been improving since 16.4 and this base cannot be improved. For lack of a better wording.

If anyone screws with you over your gameplay, I am sure they will be flamed in this forum. I would at least.

I am sorry to hear about your medical condition. Its really cool that you still do the things you do that you love (7 Days to Die) and don't give up like a lot of people would.

As far as the video. Whatever codec or bitrate or even resolution (1080p 1440P) you can use Handbrake and re-encode it to a smaller size. I will be willing to help you if you would like. I use TMPGenc which is awesome but it is a paid for software and costs quite a bit. I have used Handbrake a lot as well and it may be easier. As far as YouYube studio you just need an account. here are some links:

Handbrake:

YouTube Studio help:

As far as FRAPs, I have a recent version (paid version) and it can slow down gameplay quite a bit so if you have an alternative that is cool. Its just that FRAPs is so easy to use for me. I have a high end PC so it does not slow anything down for me when recording.

I can help you with all of this via the thread or PM or even Email.

I use 3D software for my blueprints but your way very cool too. I believe that If you want to make a good base, you should have the design before you start building. In the photo, I can count how many blocks I need by selecting a section of the model, which helps a lot too. Its hard to see but the darker colored blocks are steel, and the lighter colored blocks are concrete. the checkered Blue and Green are to see if the Blade Traps fit in the base perfectly.

All you need for your farms is to find the nearest Bob Boars/Carl's Corn. I spent more than half of my game looking around for one and then it just popped up in a further city away.

The devs are probably thinking we are taking our bases a little too seriously.

It is what it is, right. We all live, grow old, and die. I'm just getting to the "grow old" part, but any day could be my end. Until then, as long as I can play, I will be playing, lol.

Up until this evening, my friend and I were running parallel solos games, I log in and he has joined a server with several friends, and I got a chance to hear/watch the single mom/baby interactions, and all sorts of extra stuff.

Not my cup of tea. They are all playing v2.5, while I am stuck on V2.4 because of the font size reduction they did. I had V2.5 for like an hour and dies three times, couldn't find a solution to the reduced font size, and regressed to V2.4, and all is good.

One thing I hate about multiplayer is folks start a new character, but totally skip the whole survival aspect of the game, and just jump right in, and have a complete steel base/w everything. I play the traditional game, where each character has only what they personally gather.

Guess I'm a one man out kind of situation now, lol. I'll still play my guy in my sad, lonely solo game, and try to reach level 300 w/o dying. I need to test my new mic/speaker location and sound settings, and if they work, then I can keep playing on the same server/discord channel, and if they don't work, I'll look for a new channel.

What software did you use to make this? Is it free?

I like how you can show the entire landlaim (71x71) all in one shot. I can do the (71x71) also, but 2D is not so good as 3D. Plus, my bases are much smaller, and each game I try out variations to make them better.

I would be interested in trying my hand at 3D base blueprints, but cost is a concern. If the VA would pay me for the damage the army did to my heart back in 1987, then I think I could afford to buy even somewhat pricey software, but unless they grant me an increase in my DC&P rate, free software is all I'll have to work with.

Right now, I have my crafting base is basically the same height/size every game, and the only things that changes are how I lay things out. Currently, I have just a single story for my crafting base, with 24 Dew Collectors up on the roof. Footprint wise, the base is 9x9, with the first floor sitting on a 6 block high foundation, with a ladder right down to bedrock in the middle of the 9x9. I used to fill in the base foundation, and just patch this up from the outside when the zombies broke a block, but this game I have not bothered, and I can repair all the blocks from the inside (except the 4 corners, I still have to do them from the outside), but it is easy. I don't do Horde Nights at/near my crafting base, so the wandering hordes/screamers just die on the spike traps, and I can do my thing.

At the 7th block high, I use the open grid cubes in a 4 block wide deck, all around my 9x9 base. each level of my crafting base has a 4 block high interior (so I can stack my workstations), and the ceiling is 5 blocks higher than the lower floor, and then I build another 4 block wide deck around my 9x9 tower. I slap a railing on the outer blocks, and can place Dew collectors all around the deck, and 8 more within the 9x9 tower footprint (I need room for my ladder/hatch, so 8 rather than 9), but this gives ma all the smirky water I could ever want/need, and I see no use for the water purifier mod, as then I can only stack 10 water, rather than 125. I'm set up with 7 campfires within my 9x9 base (which is really 7x7 interior), and that allows me to cook multiple full stacks of smirky water all at one time.

Murkey water = Smirky water in my game, for the expression the game designers get when your little digital dude has the reaction to drinking water that is not pure, lol. If they changed the stacking limit to 125 for pure water, as well, then I would buy the filters, but as long as I can store 12.5 times as much in a single stack before purifying, then that is what I'll do. 24 full Dew collectors = 144 water, and this is just one and a partial stack when awaiting cooking/purifying, rather than 14 and a partial stacks for pure water. 7 campfires can be loaded up with 60 water each, so a total of 420 water can be set up and cooked, and when you come back no overflow/canceled is left. I just grab 4 full stacks of smirky water, and set each fire to 60, and put the rest back in the water box.

My forges are just 2 in the start, stacked one on top of the other, to the right side of my door. My first 2 workbenches get stacked on the left, and later on, I add 4 more forges and 6 cement mixers, then a second pair of workbenches and a single chem station, and that is all I am currently doing for a crafting base. 3D software would make a great image to share what my base looks like, and if folks starting off wanted, they could just copy what I do. Even better, they could build their own, and test out variations, and post their own simple/started bases.

I must be some kind of freak, as I like the start off with nothing, and build all the way to 300th level aspect of the game. I don't like starting off with a steel walled base, with steel storage boxes, all filled with stuff, which is what everyone else does. My partner just dropped his game (he played to day 36), and just jumped on to the server, and his guy made it to level 5 on his first day, but he already has steel tools, a truck, and a motor cycle.

The server is on day 14.

I was trying to catch up to my partner, and reached day 33 last play session (so we were almost even), but now he is playing on a server. Oh well.

I'll just keep plugging away.

What software did you use to make this? Is it free?
It is old and is not commercial but a lot of people start off with Blender:

I hope you do not think I used the creative menu at all to build my base. I am with you, I start with nothing (like your supposed to) and work my way up block by block and day by day. It took me 190 or more game days to finish my base (with 120 minute setting). I think people that use the creative menu to play the game and add all kinds of things are missing the point of the game, to be honest. Although some people make videos that require the creative menu of course.

I always make a temp base my first week that is just a 5x5 concrete or cobble room with 3 wide window on all sides for using my spear. Its sucks at first but I add on a little at a time. The amount of steel and concrete I used for my base must be ridiculous, but I enjoy going out and mining, raiding and scavenging every non bloodmoon day and when my base is done, it is something to be proud of.

My final base started off at 80 X 80 X 2 and the amount of clay I had after digging up the place to put the foundation lasted me forever in my forges.

It's starting to bug me that you may think I built my base with the creative menu. Trust me every bucket of concrete and every stack of steel was made via mining and savaging.

No, I get that, what I was asking about was the software to make the 3D image.

I do not and never did think you had used the "creative menu" for your base. You brought up the subject of recording software and imaging software, and that is all I was talking about. Sorry for any confusion, my bad.

What imagining software made the 3D image? Was it the blender link?

My recording software is something called OBS. I cannot see well enough anymore to actually read it's text, but I know which buttons to click.

If I understood your 3D image correctly, you use a set of 5x5 base, 4 blocks high supports, to support the outer works/elevated walkways? So, 7 such supports, and 6 5x5 empty spaces, and a pair of 3 block wide outer trim? I don't build on that scale anymore (I used to), but since I have been sick, I just go with smaller scale buildings.

My own 71x71 land claim starts with the hedge, a pine tree planted in each corner, and 8 more along the edges heading in from the 4 corners. I end up with a 5 block wide gap, in each of the 4 prime directions (NSEW) and then I build my 9x9 base right around my LCB.

Later on, I destroy the LCB, and dig a shaft down to bedrock, and put a new LCB down there, and that is where I get all my stone/clay, as I dig straight tunnels, then fill them up with topsoil, and then dig that out. Endless clay, without having to dig up the topside. Is the 16 clay/topsoil block the best the game has to offer? I get 44 clay from digging up my topsoil blocks, when mother load perk is maxed, so not quite a 3:1 return ration, but that is the best I personally know how to get. Is there in fact a way to improve on that?

My current game, I am only getting 39 clay/topsoil block, because my mother load perk is still lvl 4, but next skill point goes there.

OK, here is my upgraded starter base that I used for 28 bloodmoons while I was building my final base.

Not much to look at but it was good for quite a while.
That was a good walkthrough. With my eyes, I'll need to watch that again and again, to be able to pick out details. Did I actually see a one block stairway, next to the ladders, or was that just my eyes playing tricks on me?

I understand that the 3D image seems a bit ridiculous to build and thought maybe that I just built at the start of the game. My bad too.

The 3D software I used is expensive and old. You should go with Blender. Just get used to the x, y, z and you will be OK. You can clone a 100x100 generic unit block in the x axis and then clone what you made from the x axis to the y axis and you have a foundation. With 7 Days to Die, everything is one block, so in a 3D package like blender, it could not be easier to work with. You do not need to texture anything, just add color to the blocks to separate the different material they need. You also do not need to render either as the viewport it is just a helper to make sure your base will work.

That was a good walkthrough. With my eyes, I'll need to watch that again and again, to be able to pick out details. Did I actually see a one block stairway, next to the ladders, or was that just my eyes playing tricks on me?
Yes. I had a 1 block shaft and a ladder going down to the forges and workstation. it was primitive.

The towers in the 3D image are steel but hollow, so are the inside walls. In the image it looks like I made the corners 7 blocks deep, but they were actually 3 blocks deep and hollow as well. To attract zeds to the 2 block deep walls I used a 1.5 block plate to funnel them to it.

Day 35, 2014 hrs.

Getting ready for 5th Horde Night, spent last 2 days doing "Beer Runz" to the traders, since this is my first time w/o loot bonus, when and where do the drones start getting sold? I always used to be able to get them from Jenn, but this game, none have been for sale at any of the traders, in the 3 lowest biomes.

I'll try to post a pair of videos before starting the big event.

Nope, all my videos are too large to upload.
Use Handbrake and encode the video to x265 (HEVC), lower the resolution to 720p and encode at a lower bitrate and it will be fine. Trust me. You may think that 720p will look like garbage but for this kind video it is all you need. I encoded my 35 minute bloodmoon from AVI to x264 MKV at standard settings and 1080P and it is 5GB. I had a problem with x265 last upload so went back to x264. I image at x265 it would be 3GB.
