DLC/MODS console

Has TFP thought about releasing mods on console? I know some of it has to do with Microsoft and sony themselves. You could even sale it as a DLC( I know a lot of people will complain about how pc doesn't have to pay but I'm a realist and now people need to get paid for their work).

Even packaged as DLCs Sony and Microsoft would not allow modding. They are pretty strict when it comes to modifying the game, even going as far as restricting which settings console players can modify. Plus I think it would leave a bad taste in people's mouths.

Well, technically, if TFP were to "authorize" the mod by releasing it themselves, Sony and Microsoft would usually allow that. But TFP isn't going to spend time going through mods and verifying everything is balanced with vanilla and that there isn't any bad code in them. Mods will remain a thing for PC only unless Sony/Microsoft someday agree to at least allow XML mods.

They can't do anything until I get my gothic pants :cautious:

Here is the thing.

Console is limited to the hardware of the Series-S.
Which basically means that there is zero room for overhead since the Series-S doesn't even come close to minimum required hardware spec. (Not that the Series-X or PS5 really meet the required spec either, but they're closer.)

That compounded with Sony/MS requiring that they control the available mods, means that it is not likely you will ever see modding on the console.

Maybe after 4.0 releases, and the game goes through some hefty final optimization it might be possible that there is some overhead to allow minor modding with xpath. However you are never going to see most overhaul mods on the console even then.

Lets see what games on console are modding now? ark survival ascended they are releasing an update for 30 gigs for downloadable mod space, space engineers has mod support, arma reforger just released console mods, fallout 4, Skyrim......Its seems they are relaxing the restrictions a bit more lately...If the older consoles are limited, why do some of these other games have no issues getting mods out to those systems? Hopefully 7 days devs can work something out in the future....I guess because 7 days its a voxel engine makes it more difficult? idk

Yeah, none of those games are CPU bound, and don't have the same RAM and storage requirements as 7 Days. They aren't fully 3D Voxel games. Ark is probably the heaviest, and even that only cares about your GPU. Which is something the consoles are relatively good at with the APU on the chip since most games have very little CPU demand.

7 Days on the other hand is demanding a lot of processing from the CPU, from the GPU, and requires heavy data streaming from storage to RAM.

Minimum spec for the PC is a quad-core CPU @2.8GHz (vague as ■■■■ I know), 8GB RAM, and a dedicated GPU with 4GB VRAM.
Recommended spec is quad-core CPU @2.8GHz (vague as ■■■■ I know), 12+GB RAM, and a dedicated GPU with 8GB VRAM.
Series-S meets the CPU requirement, and that is pretty much it. There is only 8GB total RAM available to the client, shared with both CPU and video processing. It has no dedicated GPU.
This is the metric consoles are held to because of Microsoft. (Though honestly if they didn't force developers to support the Series-S, hardly any games would be available on it.)
Even looking at the decent consoles, they are borderline on the requirements. PS4 and Series-X only have 16GB RAM that is shared between CPU and GPU processing, and there is no dedicated GPU.

Which is why there is basically zero overhead for mods. Even an xml-only modlet is going to add some processing and extra RAM usage.

Yup. All one has to do is run a monitoring app and check the CPU vs GPU load. Especially when running around a downtown area, or during a T5 infestation quest. I mean, yeah, your GPU is getting a workout, but your CPU is getting positively pummeled.

Mods that add assets (like a new vehicle or weapon) are the least likely to be possible. And once you start opening up XML mods, then you get even more complaints that the mod someone really wants isn't available on console even though others are. It's "safer" to just not allow any than to deal with the headache caused by all the complaints because of only adding a very tiny percentage of mods.

In the end, it is unlikely that mods will be available on console at all. If they are, it would only be XML mods, and they would likely be limited. This is an unfortunate side effect of playing this game on console. Maybe their next game will work better on the newer consoles so that mods will not be a problem (assuming Sony and Microsoft approve them). But they just aren't likely to happen in this game. It sucks for console, I know.

Are custom maps available to console players? Like, if you used Teragon to make a really unique map, could console players join a server running that map?

Yes. As long as the custom map is within the size constraints and only uses Vanilla POI's, consoles can join. Maps like the NYC map are going to tax the limitations of the console hardware though.
