The perk magazines were really only something that could be implemented quickly and give us a bunch of filler items for book stores.

Now the question is: If all the new books are super awesome, bookstores become the most incredible source of power increases.

What would the filler content be? Perk magazines retained? Paper?

Having the player walk out of a bookstore with 15 of those new books can not be intended. ;)

just try to imagine what you could find instead of books in a bookshelf... paper, old cash, plastic, glass, rocks,... but the chance to get some of those books has to be not so high

Gazz you are always the life of the party I bet.... LOL

<snipped for space>
Less awesome books?

Something that provides a five minute minor bonus to <whatever>. You'll still get people hoarding them but that's more to do with human nature than balance.

I'd keep the perk books just just have it give a temporary bonus. Take away the restrictions.

Sounds like you describe magazines and call them books!? Can you explain the difference?
Honestly? I'm trying to refrain from referring to them as "magic scrolls". I call them books because, with the exception of comic shops, that's generally what you find on the bookshelf of a bookshop. Magazines generally appear on the shelf of a newsagent.

I have a friend who is obsessed with the difference between "a collection of comics" and "a graphic novel". If I got it wrong there were stern looks of disapproval. I solved that by referring to them all as "pictograms" which is a word that can describe either. The best defence against pedantry is often generalization -)

Learning from skill books sound much better than:

So how did you learn to build that truck from scratch?

Well I killed thirty zombies.

And how did you figure out make those first aid kits and forge guns?

Oh, I killed more zombies.

Heck, you even need a skill point just to boil water. Really? Who doesn't know how to boil water?

've already designed nearly 100 perk books. The old perk books will be deleted. The new perk books are not temporary perks, but permanent once you read them. There are collections of books, typically 5 to 8 volumes. Each volume is a unique perk but if you collect the entire set you get a special collector bonus perk that is more OP than the others.
Here are a couple sets:

Night Stalker Books

Night stalker Vol 1 Do 5% more sneak damage at night.

Night stalker Vol 2 Sneak 5% better at night.

Night stalker Vol 3 Knives do 5% more damage at night.

Night stalker Vol 4 Never encumbered at night.

Night stalker Vol 5 Bows do 5% more damage at night.

Night stalker Vol 6 Gain 5% more xp from sneak kills at night

Night Stalker Collection Perk Do an extra 50% sneak damage to sleeping victims at night.

Lucky looter Books

Lucky looter Vol 1 Find more dukes in loot

Lucky looter Vol 2 Find more ammo in loot

Lucky looter Vol 3 Find more brass in loot

Lucky looter Vol 4 Find more books in loot

Lucky looter Vol 5 Find more food in loot

Lucky looter Vol 6 Find more medical items in loot

Lucky Looter Collector Perk Find more mods in loot

so still playing A17.1 and I like the way the XP system is going for mining and gardening. much better then A17. I still think it is tough to be just a person who mines and farms. lets say we use a new feature of turning off Bloodmoon and just be a group of farmers and miners. getting up in levels would be hard.

Questing are really nice, although two problems I keep seeing. (1): radiated Ferals in places where when I am only level 10-30, just wrong. (2) loot scaling - the loot does not seem to scale even with 4/5 in Looting and level 50+ and loot goggles I am still finding crap loot. we should be seeing things like T4-T6 items and ammo like AP, and materials like mods and Mil fabrics. most every other game I play has this concept of better reward for harder/complex quest and levels.

not sure who makes these decisions but:

1. Loot quality should match level of player + skill/diff of quest/raid/dungeon

2. zombies should match level of player. no radiated ferals for anyone under 30 except maybe in a final boss like loot room.

3. think about the end game, I am level 200-300, I have everything and I can do everything. I build a monster home/base and help friends. NOW WHAT DO I DO TO STAY and play?

A bunch of fiction books with punny names. They'd have no in-game use (other than to amuse the player) but could be scrapped for paper or sold to the traders fo a few dukes.

I'm assuming that the same book can't be re-read? If not then they're going to be very OP. The old schematics weren't re-readable though so I'm guessing the new books will be similar.

If that's the case then I don't think you have too much to worry about. There is a "danger" of players becoming OP once they've read a complete volume of books, but in practice this probably won't be a huge concern.

War of the Walkers had a similar mechanic with the "class paper" system. There were something like five or six classes. You needed to collect an entire set of three before you could finish a class.

In theory this meant that a single player could become all classes. In practice, by the time you found the class paper you needed, you had already collected a whole stack of the class papers that you didn't need. (Sometimes in the double digits.)

If the new books work similarly, it's very unlikely a player will read an entire volume of books until they're already leveled up significantly.

As for "filler" - my vote would be to retain the magazines and remove the level/attribute requirements on them. If that makes them too OP then you could just reduce the time they're effective.

Eventually, when NPCs are fully implemented, you could possibly have a "librarian" NPC trader, and maybe add books that don't give any player benefit but are ultra-valuable to the librarians. "First edition Moby ♥♥♥♥" or some such.

EDIT: LOL at the forum censoring the title of a classic work of fiction. :)

"Adult" magazines...as one of the filler loot choices in book stores/shelves...under bathroom sinks ;)

They do not do anything , but sell for a decent amount of dukes...because porn , is in short supply during the apocalypse!

And come on now...I can think of tons of punny names for them...I am sure you guys could come up with some good ones!

keep both, normal loot being temp buff books, with rare loot (MAYBE 1-2 per Crack a Book) being permanent books

The new XP multiplier setting takes care of this.
