And maybe that's why the 7day PvP community is so small... The larger PvP communities have one thing in common... For the /most/ part, people are equal. If that were true for 7days then you would not feel the large loss when you die dead is dead.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "people are equal". Do you mean of equal skill? Or of equal tools, as in equipment, ingame level, etc.? If the latter, I don't see why they can't have the same opportunities in 7 days to die, although as you pointed out a PvP mode would have to be a thing of its own, rather than just a checkbox on world creation to allow or disallow PvP.

Gathering resources fast, building a base fast, then shooting accurately, all those things are part of the skillset of a player. Sure, there's RNG involved, but so is there in many other PvP games (even some eSport ones). Players can learn and get better at it.

Well that's never going to be the case, will it? If that's an argument against PvP then there might as well be no PvP games out there, ever :p
Equal opportunity? Yeh, happens all the time... Equal skill is a non starter. My younger self would have dominated my current self.

But I'm arguing FOR PvP. I want it, but it has to be done right.

The main thing is that worlds in 7d2d exist for weeks, thus people start at different times. If all players started at the same time and would be able to spend the same amount of time per day on that server, there would be equal opportunities. But that's not how it is. Some people will grind a new server hard, playing 14 hours a day and thus grow dominant, while other players (with a job or family for example...) will only have 3 hours a day and never will be competitive and others will join a week or even a month later and will have even less of a chance.

This means, compared to classical PvP titles, you need some kind of rules. In lots of MMORPGs you have stuff like Newbie protection (so you can't attack players of a significantly lower level) or limit PvP to certain areas new players can avoid until they are strong enough to compete.

Concepts that could work in 7d2d:

- Time-limited PvP with resets. Pretty much "the Purge", but after the day, everything gets reset, so nobody loses his base/stash he worked 200 hours for.

- Area-limited PvP, for example PvP is only enabled in city areas, where players can fight for loot.

- Arena-Style PvP (two players or groups enter an arena area with everything they can hold in their inventory, have a set amount of in-game hours to prepare (building walls, traps, whatever they need) and then fight.

- PvP game modes like Battle Royale with easier gathering of resources and building, so pretty much the next step in evolution from PUBG (no building) to Fortnite (basic building) to 7d2d (full building and destructible environment).

Just four quick concepts, i think there are even better concepts though. What i want to say is pretty much: You can't just allow PvP in a normal server of 7d2d and expect people not to be incredibly destructive and hateful towards each other... there will always be a ton of griefers and cheaters, heck, you even have those in PvE servers... there need to be some sort of rule to limit PvP to a less destructive field.

Generally, 7d2d will probably never be a hardcore PvP game, simply because that is not the focus of the entire balancing, nor should it be the focus. There are so many hardcore PvP games already...

This affects any PvP game, not just 7 days to die. I play PUBG every so often and most of the time get destroyed, because I don't practice on a regular schedule like more skilled players do. They have more time, therefore they have an edge. It's still fun.

I know that it's not entirely the same in 7 days to die because that translates not just to skill but also to better equipment/base/etc., but as you go on to say, there are ways to balance this out.

- Time-limited PvP with resets. Pretty much "the Purge", but after the day, everything gets reset, so nobody loses his base/stash he worked 200 hours for.
This is pretty much what I was proposing in my earlier post and I agree that it would work nicely without having to change much of how the base game plays out.

Yeah, hence why for PvP an actual mode would be required, with its rules and regulations.

7DTD gets noticed

I don`t know how you guys feel but sometimes i feel like 7DTD is more of a niche game that doesn`t really get noticed. Don`t know why but i just feel like that.

I just signed up for the State of Decay 2 Beta program and one of the questions was which game franchises i am a fan of. There were the usual big names like Far Cry, Assassins Creed, Halo but one name was actually 7 Days to Die. Made me quite happy to see this awesome game on that list.

it definitely is in my own opinion not just one of the best zombie games but also one of my favorite games and has the most game time on Steam for me.

The Devs are definitely doing something right when a Microsoft sponsored game studio asks about their game.

Just wanted to tell you guys this nice little info.

Translation: how about a dev expose the frequency of horde nights to xml and include a random range, so that it's not always 7, so that modders can do it without using custom code?
Yea, what Guppy said.

I don't know why but I never considered destroying someones base in a PVP match it just never occurred to me I dont know why, it seems so obvious. now that I think about it.

Yeah it really is a lot of fun the only complaint i have is that the AI isn't more devious and destructive.

...that just seems spiteful. I dunno, I guess it works on long term games?

There have been thoughts....and talk....and PLANS!!!!!! :)
Probably not until later but there is definitely going to be a return of horde mode.
Awesome, after 200+ hours with my wife it's hard to get her excited about starting a full new game. With the smaller shorter mode we can play for a single evening at a time and have fun.

I won't hold my breath but I'm glad to see it's still in the pipeline.

And to anyone who says it can be done in the current rwg map. The horde mode map was small resource rich and you all spawned together. It was meant for little 2-3 hour games. Some times it takes that long to even meet up and get your first forge started with 100's of hours of experience under the belt.

I had another brilliant stroke of pure and utter genius, what if certain zombies attacked blocks that were under the heaviest SI load?

...goodbye supports, hello crashing base? :)

/geniusing since 1971

It's like the movie Groundhog Day; the same topics keep coming up over and over. Underground, Leveled Loot, PVP, Long Reach Zombies on servers, Water, Duping, Performance, Level Gating, AI, Etc.

These topics will be hot fire for about a week, die off for months then they are hot fire again.

I'm pretty sure the Pimps are on this ♥♥♥♥. They'd be crazy not to. We at least know that some of these are being looked at as I write this.

Come on Roland, gives us something else to talk aboot. :smile-new:

The salt from that would be beyond imagine.

Zombies that focus on supports and level your base destroying all your loot and all your supplies.

No thanks.

Well, it's either "we want better ai because it's too easy to build a stilt base" or "don't destroy my base". Choose your side. =)

"we want better ai because it's too easy to build a stilt base" = The side I choose

Didn't minecraft have a "hunger games" mode? That may apply for a viable PvP option. Instead of faster leveling, as was mentioned earlier, everyone is level XXX and all perks researched. Players drop in at the same time with same gear (I propose having nothing) and they must craft and acquire necessary items to build better stuff. Loot for weapons/mods (since you can build weapons in A17) or utilize those small vending machines to sell weapon/armor based items. All AI threats exist and any death ends the game for you. Have a smaller RWG map with maybe a central city and a few outside towns or buildings and let the fun/camping? commence. You could put a timer on it, or not. Gear drops to entice confrontation and maybe a unique zombie type that spawns near idle players that can be used to locate them (and to discourage burrowing, though giving rock an insane hit count, but still gives resources could work too)

I bet this is moddable. Guppy? Tin? Others?

It would be cool if the game had child zombies.

You're welcome.
How about zombie.......skunks? And they spray with zombie skunk-i-ness? And if you don't cure it in a given amount of time you get endless zombies coming to you to give you a 'hug'?
