PC V3.1.0 Henpocalypse Experimental Update!

I'm really sad we can't see the chickens at all in the coop or standing outside the coop just feels like a decoration. Can we get a chicken model added?
I was quite sure my game is bugged because i couldn't see anything moving there. This is such a poorly designed workstation. I'm already waiting for a modders to do it properly.

It's so small that a chicken shown would basically have to be a baby unless it's just standing beside it, which would still look like the wrong size.

I really hope some modder will make a good chicken coop model that can replace this one. They don't necessarily have to change anything else about it, though I think the minigame going away would probably be a good thing. I'd just be happy with a mod that just changed the model to something that looks like it belongs.

TFP: If you really think your model should be in the game no matter how out of place it looks, you could at least give us an alternate recipe for the chicken coop that looks like it fits in with everything else we build in the game for all of us who think this looks bad.

I think a lot of players will just carry LCB + Chicken Coop with them on expeditions so they can catch wild chickens and convert them into domesticated ones right where they find them, then head back to base with a vehicle full of chickens huh

I am suggesting a domestication bar, so it takes a bit of time. The chicken should not instantly be like "cool, captivity is great!". We shall see.

I agree, I don't feel the art style of the coop fits the game very well it just looks goofy... Wish it looked more like a realistic style coop...and the dropping the chicken from stress brings a zombie horde...what??? Makes no sense whose idea was that? At least we can turn it off...But I love the idea of the coop and the mods slots for it.
You don't think a clucking, screeching chicken would attract zombies??? I do!

@faatal
Is there a plan, at least in the future, to add property "Pickup Target" to "TEFeaturePickup"?
I have no idea as I don't work on that and not on my radar.

I can live with that, I guess... We already have smell attracting zombies, so do we really need to worry about dropping chickens as another game mechanic? As long as it's something we can turn off, I have no problem with it since I'm sure some players will enjoy it.

My concern is the look of the chicken coop.... I like its functionality, but aesthetically it just doesn't fit, and it's too small, as others have said. Yes, people do use DIY playhouses as chicken coops, so it's not unrealistic. But I don't think that's what most players want around their base they've spent a lot of time building and are proud of. I don't mean to sound overly critical...but just an opinion.

Then they should redo the model. Like, it's just an empty playhouse with chicken sounds coming from it. It's weird, half-baked, and shows a complete inability to use even two brain cells to finish a project. You should see chickens in your chicken coop; that is basic common sense. took them what years for this? I love everything else about the system, but ■■■■, just put a chicken in it. I don't know why they have always been so ■■■■ weird about husbandry. Its will be at least 3-5 years for that change to happen after enough people complain.

Nice, that would significantly improve the balance! I think it could work like this: you put a live chicken into the coop, and if there's any feed available, it consumes one feed per minute for about 10 minutes. If all goes well, it will become a domesticated chicken and start laying eggs and providing feathers. The initial feed consumption would represent the taming process, which makes sense, cuz you need to feed a wild bird before it starts trusting you.

And yeah, if you interrupt the taming process by destroying the coop while it contains an untamed chicken, a wild chicken mob will spawn where the coop was destroyed. You will basically lose the "taming progress" on that chicken.

Is it really that big of a deal? Even if it had chickens in it, you'd see it once and then never pay attention to it again. I wouldn't be upset if they added it, but it really isn't as much of an issue as you make it out to be. "No visible chicken in muh coop? Game's unplayable!"

And my vote is the model is perfectly fine, since apparently that's going to be repeated into oblivion.

I am sure you will accept a reduced number of concurrently spawned zombies for this, right?

I don't think chickens inside coop necessarily need to be actual entities with behavior and pathfinding calculations. It would be enough to add a model with idle animations inside the coop that is only displayed when the slot is filled with a domesticated chicken item.

Actually, this small change would help make coops feel much more alive without having a significant impact on performance or the zombie count.

Since at least the forge has animations that might be possible with relatively limited effort. Though, there is the question whether most players who want this will be satisfied with an animation in a loop. As I said in another thread, cogs or wheels animated in a loop look good, but I doubt that applies to living beings as well. Are there examples from different games where this works well?

I don't speak for a lot of people, but this one seems a little dull. It's a playhouse, producing eggs for some reason.

For improvement types, best would of course be actual chickens spawned around the coop-block, (with a tame-AI). But that'd be a hassle, and a CPU drain; especially as people will make All Of The Coops at some point. Maybe make the fencing a problem for the player, not a part of the model.
Slapping an "afk" chicken (current chicken, idle animation only) in/next to it might already be an improvement, not a big one though.

But, even "static" animations can do a lot, especially if they "react" to the world around them.. alerted by zombies, sleeping, eating when player adds feed .. etc.

But it isn't complete unless you can pet them! :P

The closest example that comes to my mind is Ark: Survival Evolved with the Kanga Husbandry mod (random video, example at 15:10-16:00). It's not perfect, but when you can actually see how many birds you have inside your coop, it feels much better and more immersive than an empy house that generates eggs & feathers and makes chicken sounds.

I'm sure the people whose job it is to make these models and code can figure out how to show a no-AI chicken model without a horrible performance cost. Furthermore, some code that only lets you place so many in one chunk, and I'm sure there are several other solutions. When you go in with the mentality We will make these happen by any means necessary; you'd be surprised with what you accomplish.

But they have other things to work on and have to weigh time cost versus importance. While seeing a chicken in the coop may be a gamebreaker for you, it likely isn't to TFP. Sure they could put a whole team on it and get something done, but is it worth it to them? Probably not, at least not at the moment.

Ok, that actually looks useful and nice. If the hens are shown sitting on the eggs I can imagine even an animation loop might work without looking too strange.

Hey quick question: When you did buy this game and for how much? Do you understand how games work? You know it's a brand new thing right?

Eventually they'll add some kind of animation, and then you'll be back in here. "Omg they didn't add real chickens with full 24 hour life cycles and i can't pull them out and pet them, immersion destroyed!!! 15 years later they'll make the game fun again" It's okay to not understand how things work, but the least you could do is be respectful or god forbid constructive instead of cursing and being insulting over things you are ignorant about.
