PC zeds spawn in rocks?

Was mining and heard zombie noise. Looked up and saw a zombie digging is way out of a rock. He did not dig down from the surface as there was no hole above him. I went into my tunnel and he an 5 other friends followed me. Is this intentional?

 
Have seen them spawn in walls and cars where they are stuck, throws off spawn on horde nights too if one is stuck somewhere. Possibly related to the bug that gets them pushed through closed doors when they are jostling each other. Gets almost as bad as running round the ragged rocks used to. Bears like to get stuck in stairways too, quite nasty to be swiped by a bear phasing through a wall you just happen to be passing by!

 
Zombies don't spawn in underground AFAIK. Maybe you just overlooked the tunnel they used because the zombies dug a sharp turn at that point.

Rocks also are not found in the underground, are you refering to the normal gravel blocks or playing a mod?

Wouldn't it be easier to find or rule out a hole if you started looking for a tunnel in the underground (where they broke through) and followed their tunnel from there? The zombies might have started digging from rather far away, not necessarily directly from above.

 
Ah, good to hear. While I wouldn't be against zombies spawning in the underground as a balanced feature, spawning zombies because of a bug would spook me as well.
