I don't mind dire wolves in the forest region. They've always been there. They just didn't always look so scary. And it would have made me crap my pants as a new player to see one, which I think would be an awesome experience for any new player. They'll learn how to deal with them...after they run from and/or die to them a few times maybe. Also an awesome experience. Aside from that one corn/straw field POI with the outbuilding, I usually see them downtown. Also a scary experience. "Ack! Instant stealth! Climb a tree! Do something!"
New players aren't babies. I'd wager they've played games before. It blows my mind that holding an axe has been made a major objective at the start of the game. Er, well, how else am I supposed to use it? Word has it that was done because material has to be gathered specifically with the stone axe at the beginning, but what else are you going to have at the beginning?
The beginning has been dumbed down enough, don't you think?
