Why do hay bales only work about half the time?

If I put a huge plot of hay bales at the bottom of a tall building and jump down onto them, half the time I suffer no damage at all, but half the time I wind up with a broken leg. Are they bugged to where maybe if you don't land exactly within a single hay bale that it doesn't break your fall? Like if I land halfway on two different hay bales does that bug out the physics or something? It's the only thing I can think of that would possibly make them fail to serve their purpose.

Hmm, there has been issues with things like a ladder on top of a hay bale; set up so if if you fall off your ladder, you'd land on the bale. You wouldn't have to hit the ladder for it to cause you to take damage on landing. I think any partial block above the hay pale has that risk.

Otherwise, you might have different amount of coins on you; one of the Great Heist books allows massive drops when you have 5k dukes on you. That would explain an occasional difference.

Are you saying they behave differently in the same playthrough? When your skills haven't changed? Bales only save you from a certain height (not sure what that height is off the top of my head) but combined with other skills and perks, you can jump off Dishong and not break a leg. (I don't typically use them, though. I think they're a little OP and silly. Baled hay is not soft)

From what I remember, one time hay bales would save you from any height but in later versions they changed it so you could get injured a percentage of the time. I think they thought it was OP to be able to jump off a very, VERY, tall building and suffer zero damage.

There are no ladders or any other items nearby, just a huge plot of hay bales. This happens in the same playthrough, with no skills or any other variables changing. Just jump from 50m or so onto a field of hay bales and 50% of the time you break your leg.

Hmm, do you always take damage while landing? I think the leg breaking is a %chance, somehow depending on the damage taken (I've done no testing on it recently, but that's my gut feeling).

50m is a lot, a high parkour might be mandatory not to ever cause a break; are you using a brain chip for AGI? And switching hats...
