I'm imagining a sunken town where you can go explore, only to have to fend off alligators, water logged zombies, and of course be prepared for a dive. These towns would have different and more exciting loot, as they have not been picked clean by the survivors before you and although rusted, the items themselves could add unique loot lists to the typical "doorknob" experience we get now.
But also, and this is directed at you people who want to make the lives of those who like underground living hard, think of it this way...

...right now your major complaint is there is very little challenge to living underground; that you're safe from hordes and most dangers... but the truth is, there are NO dangers to floating on a lake during horde night, so shouldn't you want to punish THOSE people more?

Vote for water, because it's the right thing to do.
i like your ideas but you keep wording it wrong... its not punishing, its everything (everything above or below ground) should have ups and downs to make it an even choice of where to go and what to do. so no... its not punishing anybody because its a choice when it gets incorporated into the game.

take note what i said... i am not placing blame or fault on either way to play... if a player does choose 100% safety, we know or can direct them to modders or where to change it or turn off in an xml or config.

:) thats my 6 cents (inflation i spoke of earlier). :)

Or, they can just swim out to a lake on horde nights and float above the danger. <Shrug> We should get those guys, and get them GOOD. Make 'em SUFFER for not playing the game the way we play! They should just turn off zombies if they want to be safe! Bastards. Rotten to the core, all of them.

/wording changed as requested

Keep in mind that you can still have threats underground if you don't secure the entrance of your tunnels. You can leave them wide open so zombie dogs, bears and wolves does manage to reach you there while mining if you like to play with fire hehe.

No. :p

I still want both, but if I had to pick one add the cool stuff (in some cases add it back) to underground (caves, POIs, etc.) and let water be what it is.

Water done half-assed would suck. And doing it "right" would require a lot of work. Maybe add the water update as a DLC? :p

This one wasn't difficult. My choice is underground.

The reason is that underground gameplay is so far along already. We have multiple mining tools, skills & perks specifically for mining, a number of different resource blocks to be found interspersed underground, and caves meant to entice the player with what's underneath. That's a major development effort on at least four different fronts. So to not finish 'going the distance' with underground gameplay would be to abandon a lot of work: to let works in progress decay into wasted effort.

In contrast, water gameplay is much less developed. I mean no offense to the developers of course - I'm sure getting the water block we have was no small feat. But what gameplay do we have? You can redistribute water with a bucket, but then you can destroy & recreate many other kinds of blocks. You can get a drink, directly or indirectly. Moving through water is slow, makes you cold & wet, and disables minibikes. That's pretty much it. Other than staying cool or cheesing a horde, there's only one unique, useful function that water provides as implemented to date. Even that isn't very important, since you can find water through looting.

If you made the bare minimum improvements to water, basically resigned to a notion that water won't be a notable feature of the game, you wouldn't be throwing away so much partially realized potential, the way you would if you were to cut your losses and decide the underground won't be a notable feature of the game.

TL;DR: Water gameplay is still hypothetical. Underground gameplay is already in production. If only one can be a "main feature," it makes more sense to finish what you've started.

Water poi's for me. 7dtd+Subnautica?! That's gaming porn right there. But yer water physics need to be done well though.

Never been into going underground, not much fun down there but great for my insomnia. Maybe add in Graboids from Tremors I'd definitely start digging.

7D2D Underground: Decent into Hell! - DLC $9.95

7D2D WaterWorld: Bikini Beach Nightmare! - DLC $9.95

Then everyone will be satisfied.

Edit: Of course, they have to be worth the money.

I voted for water, since in real life its essential to life. I would like to see the need to have a bath in game, plumbing similar to electricity so you pump water from a water source to your base, and many more uses for water, such as bathing, cooking, washing, making concrete, etc. Also, isolated parts of the map where you need a boat to cross the water or build a bridge.

I wouldn't mind if you could pass horde night safely on a boat. Just find deep enough water and only fend off vultures. I might even use this myself if need be. I don't want to make life hard for others, i want more cool content for myself. And i don't care much for sharks, alligators and zombie fish.

More importantly though, where did the "sunken towns" suddenly come from? And with so little % of people ever diving when we have no zombies around, it seems idiotic to assume everybody will start diving for survival purposes after the outbreak. Diving just seem the last thing i'd do to find decent loot with as little effort as possible.

I'm trying to imagine more coherent survival experience and underground beats underwater in every aspect.

In case you missed OP, basic water fixes/enhancements are coming anyways. And building brides and using water for recipes are possible already.

Plumbing and pumping water to my base definitely sounds intriguing. But i think it would be less playable content then taking underground to the next level.

At least someone who speaks some sense in here! We should visit their home at night, kidnap them, show them how it is to not be able to avoid danger and purify their casualness with fire! We should form a klan or something.

Inb4 7dtd+Space engineers.

(I almost never ♥♥♥♥post, cut me some slack)

I voted water, but with shame must admit I did so without reading the OP. I would change my vote to underground if it mean we as a bare minimum had working water.
Yep, it's just another example on how to not make a poll. But it could be worse.^^

water > underground

just cuz the lakes and rivers are just obstacles at this rate. besides accidentally driving into a river on the minibike, there is no threat in the water. maybe add fishing to the game? angry zombified sharks? how about making the spider zombies able to walk on water? making the fatter, more buoyant zombies float? maybe let the hounds doggy paddle? lol. Moby ♥♥♥♥ or the Kraken as a boss? how about adding sting rays or something that we'd be able to loot poison from(as a crafting component for poison arrows)? how about a harpoon gun? lootable underwater foliage? scuba gear? underwater hidden caves? just a few ideas lol

Yup, i'm guessing many are voting 'water' before reading the OP.
Roland, we need vol 2! :D
Whatever... This is just for fun. The discussion is what is interesting and those who are discussing hopefully read the OP and other posts as well to figure out the point of the thread. If some don't like to read and just click on crap arbitrarily then they should be playing a columns ripoff on their phone instead of coming to a forum. The actual poll outcome doesn't matter as much as the conversation.

Besides Guppy is going to take credit for swaying the vote toward water anyway...
