Weapon damage

This might not be the spot to post this, I don’t really use forums so I’m unfamiliar with where to go.
The reason I’m posting is due to how the weapon damage in the game scales off level of the weapon. A tier 6 AK has higher damage than the tier 1-5, and then the tier 1 assault rifle has higher damage than the tier 6 AK and so on. My question is why is the damage not linked to the bullet type and things like durability linked to the weapon level. Setting damage to the bullet type allows the player to have a wider variety in the weapon they want to use. If I want to be most efficient with my ammo I have to continue to upgrade until I reach the highest of each tier, but what if I like the aesthetic of the AK or the .44 magnum revolver over its higher tier counterparts. If I want to deal maximum damage with my 44 ammo I have to use the desert eagle over the revolver. In my opinion at least having the damage linked to the ammo type wouldn’t affect the desire to upgrade to the next tier due to the added benefit of ammo capacity, fire rate, and number of mods to be attached. But if I want to face down a horde living my cowboy dream I have to sacrifice damage output to do so in using the lever action and the revolver. Just curious if I’m the only one with the mindset of making an ammo type have a universal damage across all weapon platforms that use it.

It's all about gameplay and design choices.  This game is set up specifically to have each kind of weapon rank up to the next tier of weapon in that category.  So the best rifle will be the sniper.  Ammo does matter, but if you use the same ammo in a tier 1 weapon and a tier 3 weapon, the tier 3 is going to be better.  Just how they designed it.  The only way you'll be able to use a tier 1 weapon without it being worse than a higher tier weapon would be to mod the weapons so that your tier 1 weapon has better stats.

There are several types of ammo already: 5 types of arrows for bows, 3 types of bullets for firearms and 2 types of rockets and they all have their own damage type.
If you wanna know the exact numbers search the Wiki, can't post the link here, it would delay the message.

I know from other games like Fallout that you can convert guns to different types of ammo but to be fair it didn't add anything but the idea of choice: You always end up with the same few Frankenguns.

You are not forced to use the highest tier weapon in this game, I tend to not go past the pump shotgun or lever action rifle when I play.

I do use the DV over the revolver, but that is for the larger ammo capacity and faster reload times.  And I have tended to keep the pistol in use long past I have unlocked the SMG.

In the past i usually went sledgehammer and rifle. This playthrough i went with the stun baton (and oh boy, that thing has become massively fun). I pair my choice weapons with robotics for the sledgehammer turrets, which i both use for general base defence, as well as taking 1 with me on missions.

In my current game which i am basically done with (day 147, level 160ish, got pretty much everything), i could still control a bloodmoon in my base with just my sledge turrets and f ex a low tier lever action rifle. But there is a world of difference using that and a T6 sniper rifle with AP ammo, both in effectiveness and xp gained.

Why AP ammo specifically you may ask? Because with the penetrator perk, i basically just shoot heads or knees on my little electric fenced and sledgehammer pathway, and kill 2-3 zeds per shot instead of 1.
