PC V3.0 Sandbox Siege Dev Diary

@HammerDano
Five years ago, I provided a friendly reminder to everyone on the forum that bandits were still years away...
When version 1.0 was released, I reiterated that bandits were still not imminent anytime soon and that the same narrative continued with the release of version 2.0...
The key takeaway is that the absence of bandits in the 3.0 update should not come as a surprise to anyone....
particularly to those who comprehend that the game, due to its coding based on over a decade-old single-core architecture, simply cannot accommodate bandits.

The other important point is that bandits hold little significance for PvP players, as the PvP environment already includes bandits as players. No in-game bandit can truly replicate the actions of what a real player can do.
PvP players understand this, which is why the addition of bandits does not concern the PvP community in any significant way.
We already possess that aspect; the issue lies in TFP's failure to recognize this.

@Grandpa Minion ...thankfully I was not on the forums 5 years ago. lol
That said...you have been consistent on that "they can't do Bandits" message for the 2 years I have been here.

(just for fun...go and watch Rick's "We sold the company video" you don't even have to leave the site to do that... he is flat out admits they needed help to finish the game)

For at least the last 6 months I have been trying to give "them" the benefit of the doubt. TFP have said that Bandits will be released THIS YEAR. and I know...and you know... anyone reading this should also know...TFP have said that before.

The only reason I am giving it credibility NOW is simply that the business arrangement has changed.

I don't think BI wants to lose money on this acquisition.

That said...it would behoove them to get on top of messaging sooner than later. It's been a couple of months since the acquisition...and I can see that it's not just me who is tired of the lack of communication. I'd say the honeymoon period for the new guys is rapidly collapsing.

I dunno, I kinda like the sirens.
It would be better if they were localized to the traders. If you're close enough, you'll hear them, with them being louder the closer you are. If you aren't close, you won't hear them at all. The traders are really the only places where you would really have some kind of warning siren anyhow. No reason you should hear it multiple km from a trader.

Maybe there could be an option to disable the storm warning and all those stupid sirens when the weather changes, you already know a storm is coming, and it happens spontaneously😁
I don't mind the sirens... but to be believable they should originate from trader compounds and be audible up to (i.e.) 10 blocks away from them.
At least that would be something realistic where you don't get the siren come out of nowhere.

In the future maybe they could allow us to craft a portable warning system (like sort of a radio) that could trigger anywhere.

Lol, aced!

Yes, Why is there a Siren and the hud Message.
You might be surprised how oblivious many people are. Without literal blaring sirens and messages flashing on the screen, they will be unaware that they're about to be caught in a storm.

However, the game does have non-destructive storms as well so it does make sense that they included something like the sirens to differentiate the two.

Though they could probably remove the sirens and replace it with more distinct, aggressive storm sounds, along with the HUD messaging.

Definitely more than 10 blocks. That's not far at all, and any real siren would be possible to hear for quite a ways. I'd give it up to around 500m, but where it the volume diminishes to that point so it's barely heard at 500m. Maybe even somewhat further, so long as it continues to get quieter the further you are.

Yeah, storm sounds would be enough, imo. There is also plenty of time to reach shelter if you're caught unawares unless you have absolutely no POI anywhere nearby. And even then, you could go underground if needed. So I don't think it's really a big deal to notify the player about a storm.

Sigh...I've said this before and I'll say it again. Storm sirens are audible from many, many kilometers away. Unless you're playing on a map many times the max size the game lets you generate, you'd hear the storm sirens anywhere on the map, regardless of which trader they're coming from.

Trying to argue some sort of realism for this is very silly. If you want them gone, fine, make it an option.

Those sirens are really loud. Ours has the ability to make announcements and I can understand the words over a mile away. To go out onto the top of that building you must wear some serious hearing protection in case the alarm sounds.

I've not been assuming the sound of the siren is just the UI trying to give me notice.

If folks are after an in-game siren, and we're talking options, I'd like something natural as a warning, like the thunder clap so that the environment was warning me. I don't want to assume the Navezgane warning system is functional, though maybe hooking it up would make for a neat world-changing restore power quest.

Yeah, the local ones don't make announcements, but the nearest one to me is several miles away, and I can still hear it while inside my house with all the windows closed. The entire point of them is that they can be heard for long distances, even inside of buildings.

I'd be fine with them having options for what sort of warning. But I, as someone who is super unobservant, like having something I can't miss.

The sad thing here is I think you actually believe this nonsense. TFP hasn't failed to recognize anything, the PVP community is the minority no matter what you believe so they aren't concerned with what all 5 of you think of bandits. They will be added, simple as that. And I'd rather them be delayed yet again rather than show up incomplete or broken.
