PC That One Week That Madmole Went Away

From a concerned long time fan of this game:
PLEASE FOCUS ON OTHER ASPECTS OF THE GAME RATHER THAN NERD POLLING.
Go ahead and release your caps lock buddy. The devs are spending zero focus on nerdpoling. Madmole already confirmed they will not be getting rid of it. These posts are all by people who can’t affect anything other than downloading the mod for it. Worry not.

The main problem i still see with the game: long term objectives.

Something that can be related to lore (needs good writing), bandits (higher-ai agents), survivors (friendly ai agents), or quests inside special POIs.

@Roland: Maybe its time for some nerd poling forum post cleanup to keep MM around? He also nailed the linux chatter as well, so maybe get us back on track?

On another subject, I just read up on minecraft's optifine's alternate texture system. In a nutshell, textures can be swapped for alternaive ones, and they can even be weighted by possibility with simple text profile entries.

Combined with texture streaming, maybe this could be the solution we need for more zombie diversity? Add this spawn feature to the code, and then add it to the entity xml. It could even be tied in with biome spawn location, to reduce texture stream load, and to give us diversity in what zombie looks we see in what biomes.

As an example, the soldier zombie could have snow camo in the snow biome, khaki in the desert, and green camo in the forest biome without too much texturing work.

Additionally, new displacement maps combined with textures could even give us alternate zombies, like Mumpy's extra zombies.

Since sp614x is the sole creator of optifine and minecraft is a voxel game as well (and since it easily doubles framerates and well as making minecraft look amazing, maybe approach him to see if he can work his magic on 7 days?

Mojang approached him to buy optifine out years ago but they only wanted to include some of the optifine features and he declined the offer, so hes still a free player without contract attachments.

I'm imagining 7 days with ray tracing like the new test seus shaders.

(Roland, could you fix this video link? I havint done one in ages and forgot how.)

I've pushed it to the front though. Everyone is complaining for no reason. Its stone axe, club, bow, pants, shirt, frame, campfire, trader now. 1 arrow, 1 frame.
So when 'everyone' is complaining, there must be clearly a reason...

The truth is these quests and their order only make sense for newbies playing this game for the very first time.

Many of us are having huge fun trying new worlds, new playstyles etc. so we often start a new game.

Then it gets annoying

Video link seems fine.
Yes, but it doesn't show the thumbnail preview. I thought there used to be a selectable tag like the quote or image one, but I might be mistaken.

I requested the thread cleanup because this close to a18 exp, I think its important to keep MM around for the hype. And people don't respect him enough to just drop a subject when he tells them its a dead issue, which is a damned shame.

This thread doesn’t support embedded videos. You did the only option. :)

While I agree that hyperbole can be fun, there were some good points made for most cases. Just because MM disagrees with many of them doesn't completely invalidate them. Just means he and/or the dev team don't prefer them.

Discussion is good, especially while waiting for a new release. It also provokes thoughts into potential changes down the road for modding which will extend the life of the game a great deal. I'm sure even MM would agree with that point.

We talk about the game because it's good MM. Whether we agree or disagree with design decisions. Even n2n1 means well even if his demeanor comes across as really poke-the-bear-ey. Next time if you get tired of a topic or line of questions, suggest a new thread for those topics and/or ignore them. That's why you pay Roland monopoly money. Don't just throw up your hands and walk away.

I'm neutral about the whole ability to nerd pole. But core game mechanics do not need to be altered just to appease something so minuscule. Please. . . Just focus on literally anything else to make Alpha 18 the best Alpha that ever did release.

Edit: Minecraft allows nerd poling. It is or at least was an insanely popular Voxel game. I really think that is proof alone that this shouldn't be a development focus until the last bits of the game.
Just for info: The Devs are not spending ANY time on nerdpoling. It is NOT being removed per MadMole. The only people wasting time on it are players commenting about a mechanic that is done/finished/complete/finis! :)

Totally agree about discussion. I didn't think food spoilage is a topic I care much about, but feel it is a core aspect of the game that is worthy of possible discussion. What I have been reading lately, however, just seemed like people were making a game out of how many changes they could ask for in one thread. There were multiple posts on the jump animation of the spider zombie. As far as a list of things the core gameplay mechanics require this doesn't even register. I understand the quick fixes that TFP can pull off and don't require many developer resources, but some of these were hard to take seriously.

It is like someone writes a novel that is 90% complete, then a few readers who didn't contribute to the initial authoring of the novel feel like certain aspects of the story should change because that is what they like now and start "debating" with the authors on why it should be that way after the fact.

This kind of chipping away at the TFP vision is certainly not going to endear MM to finish his videos any time soon. Remember, TFP could follow the attitude of the developers of say, The Forest, and simply end any communication between long releases.

I agree discussions are good and can provide alternate points of view that may not have been considered. Eventually the discussion is over and it is time to let it go and move on. However some here seem to think that when that point comes they should just act like a two year old that's just been told NO! and whine and cry to try and get their way.

I don't blame MM in the least for getting tired of it and taking a break. There has been more open communication with TFP than any other game company I know of but this constant whining and nitpicking about non-issues will put an end to that I assure you. At some point it's just not worth putting up with anymore.

Why do you think the mechanics are already complete/is done/finished/finis?

She's still changing.

It constantly introduces new changes, added, removed...deleted, erased, eliminated....in general - it often loses something ;)

Nitpicking the tutorial, nerdpole and now saying skyrim's stealth is trash? Thats enough for me me. I'll check back next week to see if there are any sane topics to talk about or actual questions that I haven't answered 5000 times.
"Goodbye" posts are a violation of the TOS.

How do you react if one of your recruits continues with a discussion after you said "I made my decision. Discussion is over". Would you let him argue with you further? Surely not.

But a month later the situation might have changed and created new facts. And if you are a good instructor you might hear him out again if he has a better argument now. Or you might think about the discussion again and re-evaluate the situation. A month (or in the case of TFP an alpha) later, a new situation.

I don't understand what you're reading... I wrote that the mechanics of the game are still changing.

Because it's alpha. Or not?

Can't you see that there are changes with every alpha?

where is this about some kind of dispute?

A discussion is not a dispute. We are discussing among us and with TFP, all the time. When they say they have decided something that usually means there is no point in further discussing it at that time. Until a new alpha is available and maybe a new situation might make a new discussion over the same topic possible or necessary.

But still - what does this have to do with what i wrote here?

About a year and a half ago I gave a code named hint for an upcoming feature. So for a change in topic let me do so again. Joel will probably reveal it when he returns but until then let’s see what guesses arise from
Codename Mantis Shrimp.
I think this is due to the fact that the game now appeared underwater environment. This is a new underwater enemy.

Not fish. It's crawling on the bottom.

It's shrimp.

It's Mantis Shrimp.
