Set Bonus Rework Suggestion

I really like the new armor system, but I would love if we weren't forced to use 4 of the same types of armor to get the set bonuses.  Some games have several tiers of set bonuses (much like this one), but are achieved in a different way.

I would love to see a system that maybe requires a certain amount of "points" to achieve different tiers of set bonuses.  For example:

tier 6 armor would give something like 8 points toward a certain set bonus, and to achieve the 6th tier of a set bonus, you would need 32 points.  Meaning you need 4 pieces of tier 6 armor, from the same set, to achieve the full set bonus (just like how it is now).  However, with this system, you could swap out 1 or 2 pieces of the set, for a different type of armor, but still achieve a weaker tier of set bonus.  for example:

A single tier 6 armor piece could give 8 points, to its specific set bonus.

tier 5 gives: 6 points

tier 4 gives: 4 points

tier 3 gives: 3 points

tier 2 gives: 2 points

tier 1 gives: 1 point

To reach a tier 6 set bonus, you could need: 32 points.

tier 5 needs: 24 points

tier 4 needs: 16 points

tier 3 needs: 12 points

tier 2 needs: 8 points

tier 1 needs: 4 points.

This way, If i had 3 pieces of tier 6 "nerd" armor, I could achieve the tier 5 set bonus for nerd, but never tier 6.  The my last piece of armor could be tier 6 "nomad", and it would be enough to get to tier 2 of the nomad set bonus.  While this may sound over powered at a glance, the set bonuses for tier 6 are usually about TWICE as strong, as that of tier 5, so in total, you would have a lot LESS bonus(es) than with a full tier 6 set bonus, but it would be less penalizing to mix and match different armor pieces you may like.

This would add more variety to the builds we may want to make, without making them overpowered in any way.

Also mixing different "weights" of armor (like medium, and heavy) would not be as effective, since the "heavy armor" perk is under strength, and the "medium armor" perk is under agility, making it harder to min/max.  However, mixing 2 different sets of heavy armor, would still be effective, without putting points in a different tree, but also without being too strong (since you can never achieve tier 6 set bonuses), but also allowing you to get "some" of the set bonus(es), if you want to mix and match.

Ultimately, I think this would add to the customization and choices, without being too "easy" or "OP", making it a nice trade off for those who want to mix and match armor pieces.

Thanks for reading! Let me know what you think.

Armor is hit or miss right now. Some is already OP and adding this would make it worse, I think.  Others wouldn't necessarily even benefit from this.  I think armor bonuses and set bonuses really need to be completely redone instead.  Most are more a meme than useful.

Can it not be both? I haven't tried many armor or set bonuses out, so i cant really speak for balance between the pieces, but I would still prefer the ability to mix and match without completely missing out on set bonuses.

I mix all the time.  I don't feel the set bonuses are really worth it unless you like all the individual bonuses in that set.  But it depends how you play.  For someone who gets infected and injured a lot, the preacher set is definitely the best option for them, for example.  But beyond that, I really don't have a problem mixing armor.  I think getting partial set bonuses from multiple sets is just too OP.  And like I said, I think the bonuses and set bonuses really need to be reworked entirely.  Half the stuff isn't even worth using and the other half is only useful if you are doing some specific task.  Few items are really good for just something you will use all the time.

I mean am I the only one who thinks it’s weird that the Farmer full set bonus doesn’t help you you know farm? Or is it just me? I’m fine with a complete rework. I’m pretty much using nerd, preacher, ranger mix 24/7 but wouldn’t mind trying out new things if the price was right…or if I had crazy amount of legendary parts…neither exists for me right now and that combo gets the job done.

There are a lot of them in the game. Look at the merchant for quests for clothing stores, the level does not matter. I usually bring 4-8 components from each of these quests.
Thanks hopefully Jen will offer those as I’ve been working for Rekt but going to be setting up shop near her this weekend. Don’t recall seeing him offer any quests to those.

So far been just searching through all clothes piles, racks, and garment bags but RNG has been well RNG. Though Rekt did send me to the Calm Inn last night and I came back with 3 so maybe my luck is turning around. Do have max Lucky Looter so maybe I’ll be swimming in them soon.

Also the bonus should be better and be built for classes/builds

And parts of armor should be changed

Like farmers bonus is food bonus, plus 1 to perception and buffs rifles, spears and food consumption

While Scavenger has  increased loot  pluand buffs spears rifles and explosives
