Console IMPORTANT: V2.0 Storms Brewing & Console Edition FAQ

Q: How do I play the V2.0 Storms Brewing update on console?
A: V2.0 Storms Brewing is currently experimental. While experimental, it is only available to PC players that opt into the experimental build. Once it reaches stable status, everyone on PC and consoles will download it automatically. So you won’t need to do anything special to get it.

Q: Can I continue my V1.4 game on V2.0?
A: No. With V2.0 installed, you will not be able to play any saved games started on V1.0-V1.4.

Q: After I update to V2.0, can I return to V1.4 to continue my V1.4 game?
A: This is the big reason I’m making this FAQ. The Console Edition is not like Steam, where you can select an older build to download at any time. On consoles, once your device is updated to V2.0, you will not be able to return to V1.4. So you probably want to wrap up your V1.4 games now, before V2.0 is released to consoles.

Q: How is it allowed that an update will break my old saved games?
A: Microsoft and Sony allow breaking saved games for games with a beta label. This status is indicated when you launch the game, in the disclaimer which specifies, “This Title is Pre-Release software.”

Q: Can I stop the game from updating so I can keep playing my V1.4 game?
A: You can disable automatic updates on your PlayStation or Xbox. However from what I’ve been able to determine, game updates are required on Xbox, and users report disabling them on PlayStation is not reliable.

I’m sure people will have strong opinions about this reality, but I wanted to get the information out there before V2.0 goes out to consoles.

Just curious why the consoles can't opt in to experimental versions. Is it related to hardware/software architecture or Sony/ Microsoft permission?

Oh, this is really horrible tbh.

I bought 7 Days to Die v1.0 console edition and have almost 26 days (real days) played time on my game. I'm level 300 on day 458 in my world and I've invested everything into my base buildings etc, and now you are telling me, that game will just be gone - and that I should "probably want to wrap up your v1.4 games now"?

I'm sorry, but that's just poo - no offense. The game is v1.4 - how can that be seen as beta or pre-release software?

I've been looking so forward to 2.0 - not expecting my Navezgane map to be updated with new POI's and remapped (just like my years old Minecraft worlds don't), but I was hoping to respec and test out new features that could be added to old worlds (weather, skills etc. should be able to be added).

And I was planning on also starting a new game to test out new POI's and random gen map.

Unfortunately, each major release version (2.0, 3.0, and 4.0) will most likely all require starting a new game. Minor updates like 2.1 normally should not. This game is still an unfinished game, regardless of the version number. Yes, I also think using version numbers from 1.0 up for an unfinished game is not right, but that is just how it is. I think it has something to do with MS/Sony requirements for games, though that's just a guess on my part.

Until 4.0 is released, you should expect to see save breaking major updates. You could choose to wait to play the game until 4.0 so you don't have to deal with that, or just accept the reality of it and start new games each major update. Once you can play on dedicated servers, it *may* be possible for a PC user to copy your base and export it as a custom POI and add that to a new game's map so you don't lose it. However, this won't help this time because you won't have access to dedicated servers until 2.0. And I'm not sure if you'll be able to use a map with custom POI, though I think it should be possible since those are nothing more than blocks placed on a map and the consoles shouldn't even know if it's custom or not. You wouldn't have it locally and so couldn't use buttons or keyracks and won't see it from a distance, but since it's just a base, that shouldn't be a problem as you wouldn't have buttons or keyracks. And with having dynamic meshes at your base, you'd still see it at a distance even without it installed locally. I'm not sure how crossplay currently works, but if you are able to get a PC user to join your game, they may still be able to copy your base for you. But a PC users or dedicated server would have to be the one hosting the new game to include it on the new game's map.

Other than that, I'd just say to consider starting a new game as a way to take what you've learned from your previous game so you can improve on what you did.

This is not neccesarily a bad thing.

One does hope that someone in the mod community figures out a way to import saves into the new version or, mod the save file to be compatible.
Never downplay the mod communty's ability to make the world a better place...

I haven't ever seen anyone do that in the past with this game, and the only people who would really benefit from it would be console, but they can't use mods, so....

For everyone else, they can easily just choose not to update until they are ready. Console seems hit or miss on if that works based on the OP.

No offense taken. I think many console players won’t expect this, so I figure the best thing I can do about the situation is spread the word before it happens. To me, the worst part is that (from what I can tell) users may not even be able to stop their game from updating. That’s a Sony/Microsoft thing, and I really wouldn’t like it as a consumer.

I can say that historically many players end up enjoying the opportunity to start over, and experience the progression from the start again. But I get that naturally people would prefer to have the choice.

True. But console users are not unfamiliar with modding save files which is what would have to happen. Just saying…

This morning, I awoke and read your "26 days" story.
The question that arose in my mind is how you can be this obsessively attached to your current game map?
Your loss appears to have affected you more profoundly than many real-life events.
Your story also represents the most significant challenge that PvE players typically encounter when transitioning to PvP in 7 Days to Die.
They often exhibit an attachment to their base and items that surpasses even that of a crazed spouse fixated on their partner.
Regardless of the situation, reading your story brought a smile to my face while I enjoyed my morning coffee; thank you.
On a side note, for you... I have accumulated over 27,000 hours and many years of gameplay on 7d2d, experiencing the loss of countless bases and similar setbacks throughout that time, you will eventually acclimate to it.

I have tried many times over the years to create a converter that would do this. However because of changes in the core code, it becomes impossible. I did get very close once, but because the way item and block mapping is managed, things still ended up getting swapped around. And there is no "converting" massive changes to player progression, so it just resets your character data anyway.

Honestly i think folks would be fine keeping their fancy bases although the stats reset. And even if a few block ms in the base changed i think folks would still have no issues with that.

I understand we can turn off biome progression which I’d like to do.

But…I love the idea of the storms …if we turn off biome progression will we lose the storms as well???

Thank you

I’m not sure, but the answer would not be platform dependent or pertain to this topic about updating from V1.4 to V2.0. I recommend asking in the Dev Diary or making a separate thread about this.

Maybe some day they can make it possible to export a base on console and then be able to add it back into a new game? Of course, a player would have to know to do that before their game updates, so it might not be much use.

The first thing that came to mind was like on ARK, being able to transfer your character and items from one server to another. Maybe they could figure out a way for us to be able to blueprint our bases and everything within our claim block zone and when a new version comes out we'd be able to open "said" blueprint at the beginning of a new session and have our character and base in the same location, but we'd probably have to start over on our player levels though.

I'm on Xbox Series X and have automatic updates disabled. Once the update is released I'll try to see if I can start the game without updating. Not sure if it forces you to update before being able to play again. I'll download the update later but curious how this is handled.
