I'm watching a YouTuber one-shotting plague spitter bees using AP ammo

I kill them one shot with a spear. Granted, I always attack everything with power attacks, but even so, if a spear can one shot the bees, a sledgehammer should be able to.

Really? Granted, I tried a Q2 stone axe, but it took 4-5 hits before they died. I just assumed it was an intentional thing where you needed a melee weapon and not ranged weapons or tools.

The bees, not the spitters. ;)

Spitters can be killed easily with any weapon. The bees resist at least ranged attacks, and I though tool attacks as well, though maybe I'm wrong.
 
Finally got around to testing it a bit; the first point in penetrator seems awesome for anyone meeting the spitter bugs a "little too early":
The bugs have so much armor, that they're actually immune to pistol damage. But with the first point Penetrator, they take a couple damage per hit even from a pipe pistol.

It takes a few hits (3-5) to kill, but at least they'll die from range with just that one point.

The second point is mighty expensive, requiring 4 Perception; and only cuts the shots required by a little bit - so I don't really suggest going for more than one; for this purpose anyways. But no need to wait for AP ammo, or lucky books; just one skill point will help a lot :)

If you hit with enough pellets, the pipe-shotty can one-shot them with the one point. If you don't, well, run; or carry a couple..
