I can't place my work bench anywhere I want.

I added two 5x2 blocks to the length of my base and could not place the work base there. So I added two more 5x2 blocks. It's still would not let me place it there. I don't understand what's going on.I know would work in a19.

Are any of those 5x2 blocks visually deceiving? E.g. plates which only take up what appears to be a few cm, but the block is then used? 

I mistakenly did a base design where I had the plate on the bottom of the bock, o anything I put on top of it "floated" 90% of a block off the ground. Same thing happens with like poles, walls, switches, torches etc.

No these are valid blocks that I placed and upgraded to wood blocks

I don't think so. I've made a lot of work stations. Never had this problem before.

Is it a height issue?  Meaning, is your ceiling too low to place them?  Try it in a base with a higher ceiling to see if that affects the outcome.

A half block or plate are valid blocks that would prevent you from placing a workstation.

The problem went away when I built a roof over the ledge I was trying to place the workstation on. I have placed workstations out in the open on a ledge before. So I'm not sure what was going on.
