Sorry, my long winding sentences are often hard to understand. So I'll try one more time even though this point isn't really worth talking endlessly about: The value of the current console game depends on
future sales. This value can only be guessed and will be different for any prospective buyer. It follows that even if a buyer values the source code similar or lower than TFP does, he could bid more for the whole package than TFP.
I have already answered that question and listed a few reasons, in an answer to you no less!! No surprise you don't remember it, it was months ago. See the list further down in
https://7daystodie.com/forums/showthread.php?93089-Telltale-Update&p=953380&viewfull=1#post953380 . Obviously point 2 won't be valid in this scenario, all the other reasons are still good.
Even a DLC is possible, probably only in cooperation with the new owner. But the new owner would be interested in a DLC as well (as he might get a small percentage of the revenue and it would increase the value of the base game)
Meganoth, I agree this point isn’t worth the long discussion we are having, but I stand by the thought that if another party is now involved the cost for TFP will go up. Regardless of the motive, or any other variables we have not discussed.
I apologize, I forgot we talked back in February and I asked the question already and thank you for the link as a refresher.
From your post
TFP has a few reasons they might be willing to foot the bill:
1) Their name is on the line, console customers won't differentiate between telltale and TFP, especially after telltale is just distant history.
Console customers already don’t differentiate between TTG and TFP already. Which I think we can both agree is the case, so I don’t believe the would be willing to foot the bill in this case.
2) The long tail
This is possible, but as we both know very risky to try and guess how many additional copies will be sold vs cost of the source code. This could be the main reason for anyone to attempt to buy the source code, which would only drive the price up.
3) They might feel an obligation to all customers of their "baby"
I am going to say with the lack of communication for the console side, I don’t believe they consider this their “baby”
4) Generating good will makes even bussiness sense as it might drive PC sales if word-of-mouth is good. Word-of-mouth crosses platform boundaries because console players can have PC player friends
I don’t really follow you on this one. I get the word of mouth part, but don’t feel this game has a good “cross platform” communication. Plus at this point the games are very different in terms of skill points, experience, loot.
5) An addon/expansion on the console could actually generate profit in the future (but only after 1.0 on PC, I don't think console players in general would pay for alpha16 or any other alpha as a DLC)
This is your best point IMO. Of course TFP don’t need the source code to do as you suggest. Your 1-4 answers I just disagree with, I do understand there might be a .00001% chance of being right. Now answer #5 once again really wouldn’t need the source code, and as I said in a previous post is the only logical path left IMO. Re-release the game after going gold for PC, and maybe with the engine upgrade they can add other parts of later PC alpha versions.
Which of course brings us back to the same point we have been at since 11/2018 the TellTale Game update post. Since I own both versions I do still read the PC side. Which on 3-4-2019 Madmole (says Fun Pimp Staff) started a post with
“Hey everyone we're still fixing bugs and working on Alpha 17. But some of us (artists and world builders) are moving on to Alpha 18. That said, here are a few features I can confirm. We will update this post with more content as it comes. Alpha 17 took way too long. BUT, it was a huge framework build and now we are done changing major systems and done adding framework. From here forward its optimizations, bug fixes, polish, and new content, in that order of priority.”
Just a little friendly hey everyone this is what is going on and our current game plan both positive and negative.
Followed by this shocker
“The truth is we ran out of time with A17 and lost all our books to the new perk system.”
You cannot tell me that TFP don’t know how to communicate, and when things go wrong do the right thing and tell the truth.
I do hope they just re-release the game and get paid for the “new” work that could be added, along with the fixing of some plain old game killer bugs. Of course if the console side is not going to be any better even with the engine update then rip that band-aid off.
Just a reminder to everyone ELSE, this isn’t TFP fault. This whole mess we are talking about right now, is because of TTG. This thread has this in the title “TellTale closure and future of console edition”. TTG created this whole mess, and unfortunately for TFP their name is only there because they let TTG use their code. So being angry at TFP because the update didn’t happen is wrong.
It would still be nice to know if things look more positive or if there were setbacks based upon the last official post since Nov of last year.
Or where I can go pre-order the re-release, PS4.
