I don't know much about guns but the simple physics of shotgun spread means that the range of buckshot _is_ actually crap... the pellet can't damage something it doesn't hit.Trope i hate the most about shotguns in video games is almost all of them make the range crap, and the pellets become cotton balls 10 feet away. Sawed off though, that could use some work.
There's also the problem of calculations per frame. Do you treat each pellet as a separate entity and have to calculate 27 physics objects per shot or do you cheat and nerf the damage over distance. Most programmers would choose the latter, it's far faster to calculate.
