A centralised system has a single point of failure.
yes I agree, BUT...

explain that to Microsoft, Blizzard, Google and many more who have their own in place... the BIG companies got big for a reason and we were not given the choice.. so Steam (Gabe Newell) is riding the wave as well.

:)

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be too difficult to have the option on the server. Either use a central repo or pass the data from server to client. I'm damn sure you're not contractually obliged to use the steam workshop for mods otherwise you'd be using it now.

There's rarely a single solution that solves everything.

is there a way to do that on a hosted server?
I haven't spent much time in the world editors, but I imagine once you save your changes you replace the world directory with your modified world after adding the buildings, and the template on the server would be updated. Use SFTP or whatever method your host provides to upload the directory your world is in. There may be a more informed reply out there, but that's my somewhat educated guess.

If it can be easily done, hopefully the Pimps will code for it, but I suspect the game will end up with "Steam or nothing" for auto-mod-installation.

It's a lot easier now than it has been. The unity asset bundle system has just had an overhaul, I should be giving it a prod in the next couple of weeks.

I know there are some parts of 2018.x that TFP need, such as the new Garbage Collection system and that'll have all of the tools needed for streaming asset bundles. It was designed for mobile games where they need to stay within strict size limits to be posted on <whatever> app store. They can upload what is essentially a bootloader and download the rest of the game to the customers phone, bypassing the app store requirements.

I think everyone here is getting ahead of themselves...we cant even get temperature, weather, RWG, biomes, perks, framerates and all the other stuff working correctly and you guys want mod distribution up and running.

Never mind working, we can't even get a stable mechanic :-)

Honest answer? 6-12 months for closed beta. I'm just finishing off a procedural building generator for adobe housing so I don't end up with repetitive meshes.

Don't worry, my balls are big enough to handle a little teasing :-)

and the critics are forming the lines because they seen a date! :)

oh... i do miss the closed alphas and betas. :)

Is there any news on when random gen will be fixed? i cant get a map with a cathedral or Dishong towers on it, i want to play so bad on random but re-building a cathedral is one of my main motivations.
The only news I've heard is they are working on it with no schedule given. They never give a time frame for these sorts of things.

This why I avoided EA at all costs. :-)

I'm also avoiding the "fortnite kiddies" by going turn-based for the base mechanics, a stepped physics engine if that makes any sense. The current plan is to have a population of 1,000,000 NPC's interacting with the player and each other on the server. A lot of this will have to be abstracted for performance reasons but they should all be able to starve to death and, if possible, breed new NPC children. A truly dynamic world.

Steam may not always be with us. At least have a backup system so future retro gamers can still use mods.
How about if you sell the game somewhere other than steam? Do those players miss out on mods?

You need any more reasons? I've got a bag full here.
I'm pretty sure that games that use the steam workshop can be manually modded as well. I'm only assuming this because I've seen game in steam workshop also have mods on Nexus mods you can download so it is an assumption on my part.

You're right, there are several that will allow you to use another system.

Also Remember Gabe is Ex-Microsoft. I remember working with him in the late 90s and he shows up in his NSX and goes "you mean I need to make content work on dialup?!" he left shortly after to start his own firm.

Dont forget to yank out your entire core system and redo it a few years in. I hear thats the road to a truly successful launch ;)

Balls to small to dare EA though :) Kinda funny that the critique comes from that side on an EA (yeps) title ;)

Big enough though (cant be the balls) to know now allready its gonna be a "perfect" game in 6-12 months.

"Laughing the balls out of my trousers here".

Related to Zehmatt by any chance? ;)

Cheers

Do you think EA is an integral part of developing a successful game?

Boy do I have news for you. EA destroys more game ideas than it creates JUST because of pressure to please a thousand different people. Look no further than this one.

I miss the good old days of playing a developers vision and not the vision of a bunch of armchair devs.
