Speaking of the risks of one-block egress... Y'know, crouch-walking isn't merely slow, it's tiring.
We're not built to walk like that. It's more physically taxing on the leg muscles than upright walking. In real life you might crouch-walk to present a smaller target, fit through a small opening, or avoid detection; but nobody's crouch-walking to save their strength. Just imagine how your legs feel after running a mile, and then imagine how they'd feel after crouch-walking a mile.
Yet I think in every game I've played, stamina and movement speed are directly related. So the convention in games is that crouch-walking takes as much stamina as walking, or even less. But really, it should take more stamina.
