Wait.... In A17 it's confirmed that whenever you melee hit a zombie they will automatically hit you back like some kind of Thornmail deal? This is indeed an AWFUL idea and removes skill entirely from the equation. It's a good thing I'm pretty sure the Devs haven't officially mentioned this in the Developer Diary for Devs. Unless I totally missed that part
I'm pretty sure that's NOT how the mechanic works. MM was referring to the change in how Zeds can attack - i.e they can hit you while they're getting up (in A16 they have to finish the animation first).

So your chance of getting hit is better than in A16. This is a good thing - Zeds in A16 are too easy once you have decent gear...

 
It's worth waiting for and you should do something else. The two are not mutually exclusive.
While you are doing something else the wait is more bearable.
Thing is I'm in the mood for a base building survival and that something else would be a different game in the genre.

I’m going to give you the low down.
Alpha 17e could be released today. But if it was people would be REQUIRED to restart every other day or so. They would also have to ignore aspects of the game that are not fully implemented or that are currently under construction (such as Blood Moon night).

They would also have to endure occasional crashes and NREs spamming the console requiring a shutdown of the game.

They would have to play in Navezgane as Random Gen is still under construction.

And finally 99% of the bug reports they would send in would be of already known issues or of unfinished work that isn’t a bug it’s just not finished.

Now, everyone SAYS that they don’t care about that stuff and they just want to help find bugs but the truth is most people just want to play a game that works and they get angry when it doesn’t.

So the owners will determine when the game is to the point that frequent required wipes and restarts are not so frequent as they are now and that the known bugs are mostly fixed so that the reports that come in are actually helpful and not just spam of what they already know.

So when will that be? Any weekend going forward honestly. It’s completely in the minds and hearts of the owners. If I was the owner, I’d have unleashed it already and let you guys burn yourselves out on playing A17 Days 1-10 a couple dozen times by now.

The true owners are kinder than I am.

One question to the more informed members of this forum:

When alpha 17 is released, will the map im playing on be actualized or do i have to start a new map to play alpha 17?

I love the game, got over 1.1k hours on steam and even more offline... but one of many factors why its taking so long, and actually the only factor that I have no understanding for (if thats the right term), is that you keep fixing things that don't need fixing and reinventing features that are already there.

The buff system went through a full rebuild basically every update since it was added.

True, each of these new iterations was better than the previous one. But at some point you'll have to just decide "that'll do" and move on.

I'm a big fan of you guys and your game and will keep supporting it and recommending it to others like I did since I started playing it years ago.

But if you keep reinventing the wheel you're not gonna get any further.

Some obvious things to point out:

- weapon parts system is great, why remove it now after you kept changing it up after introducing it in the first place?

- weapon and tool quality is great, it means that you always strive for that bit of improvement. Even when you reach the purple stage, if you find a spiked club 570 you still want one with 600 for that little extra damage. Why take that away? Thats time and gameplay the player spends striving for a goal. Why remove gameplay? The sheer amount of gameplay to be had in this game is what makes it great in the first place.

- cars found in the world. I know you have limited assets on your atlas to spend, but how about finding trucks on the roads? How about jeeps. How about tanks. There are army zombie, military bases, everything. A humvee. Motorbikes. Muscle cars. I've been sick of seeing the same car over and over again 5 main updates ago. This aint a biggie.

- roads over lakes? You've proven in your very first iteration of random gen that you are able to detect water bodies and made roads go in a straight line over them. If you can do that, surely you can do bridges.

- zombie bears. their "zombified" texture only shows up from far away if you aimzoom on them, or if you get really up close for when you're not zoomed

- do diamond deposits and gold ore etc even generate in random gen? We have multiple huge mines on our server and havent found one. But recently the trader for some reason sold 1500 ore for 2 coins each. I'm not sure traders are supposed to sell that.. ? (I'm sure they arent)

I love the game but I'm not some fanboy who can't see any flaws in my favorite game (Which it is). Most of these arent thaaat huge things. And I know you're not a huge development team. What I don't understand is just how you manage to rebuild systems that are already done with each update instead of adding new features or changing other features that need it more. Like the A17 Health System changes. What is that? A16 Health was perfect. Never seen better in any survival game.
Maybe the old systems had underlining issues that we aren't aware of and in order for the game to reach it's potential the way they want it, these were necessary changes?

Maybe these changes will actually allow them to do the things you want, that the old system wasn't allowing for?

I can understand, to a point, of ppl being put-off because of the long wait time for this build but I don't understand ppl telling them to basically "Settle for what you have now, just make it work and be done with it".

I'll take any improvements I can get, Instead of them putting band-aids on those old systems just to make it work.

From what I'm getting from the MM vid and whats being said about melee, is totally different from what you're getting. idk we'll see I guess.

Would be nice to have: Seasons, some other aspect of surviving, so no longer snow only in the current biome, but instead having a global season, when winter comes, you have to be prepared.Maybe that is something we can mod in :-)

If im not mistaken thats allready been done. Check out wintermod (or something like it) in the mod section.

Starvation has true seasons, Spring through Winter, configurable in xml. Seasons impact plant growth, animal spawns, rain/snowmelt and temp. Perhaps TFP will take a look at the code at some point and add in something even better.

^ there was a lot of awesome stuff in starvation for sure! seasons, fishing, decorations, zombies, and i loved the rad zone stuff

I only play random gen and get diamond deposits at least once on every map playthrough

It could be that someone sold them to trader.


 
Looking in traders.xml, I found two interesting lines:

Trader 1, carries better weapons at higher levels.

Trader 2, carries better tools and construction material at higher levels.

but trader 2 is not active.

No diamonds, gold or silver ore there.

And I'm still sitting hoping for you to reconsider the plans for melee. Having to take a hit to deal one is suicidal.
That is not how it works.

I can still move in, hit and back out without being hit. It is just harder, since the zombies are more reactive and can attack at times they could not attack before.

You will have to start a new map. Many blocks have changed or been replaced. The old map data will not work.

 
Well I got you beat at 4,877 hours does that mean my opinion matters 4 times as much =P. I would rather them provide a FINISHED product with as much working content as possible. Also for their gold / final edition to be what they entirely hoped and dreamed it would be. If it isn't there is always 7 Days to Die 2 like they keep hinting at if they're too ambitious for 7 Days to Die 1's engine.

I didnt say my opinion would matter any more or less than anyone else's. All I said is they're slowing down themselfes unnecessarily by reinventing their own features over and over and over. And I'm absolutely patient. Still enjoying the heck out of Alpha 16.4, playing with some comrades almost daily. But there is a difference between justified delays ("We need to fix this first. We need to add this new feature first. We need to optimize this first. We need to polish this first.") and delays just out of a whim ("Oh, so I woke up today and that health system I made happen throughout the last 3 years and kept improving is actually ♥♥♥♥, let me completely redo it because its not like there is plenty of other things still to be added, but why add features if I can redo features that are already there and working fine") ("Oh, the skill tree system that our team worked hard on making it work as optimal as we could... I hate it. Lets redo the whole thing. For the 5th time.")

I don't expect Alpha 17 before christmas and I'm fine with that. But redoing features just for the sake of redoing features has slowed down this game development so much... they won't go gold before 2022.

Do players hear zombie footsteps now? Also sorry for getting it wrong then. But the way madmole said it in the video "you gotta take one to deal one" was quite clear. Apparently its been changed since or he didnt describe it accurately. No problem. I'd love it to be even more skill based than it already is. As long as its realistic for the zombie to be able at the time when its hitting (unlike A16.4 zombies that hit you while they're falling onto the ground ... because you can swing at a standing player when you fall to the ground lol).

 
I am sure most would agree that we would rather they spent time working on bugs, than on making another video.
Ah. The majority argument.

I for one would like a video. Its been, what, 2 months since the last one?

 
"Hey lets remove zombie looting because that is not at all an integral part of getting brass". Then in the same video "We're not removing zombie looting, they'll drop a sack of loot sometimes". Wat?

It could be that someone sold them to trader.
Sold Diamond ore to the trader? Not talking about diamonds. Actual deposit blocks. You cant obtain those normally. But the trader sold them. In the default game. No mods.

 
Raw diamonds, silver and gold nuggets.

I've never seen deposit blocks at trader at all. You can get them only in creative menu.
