Crashes to desktop

7 Days has been randomly crashing to the desktop recently, which is weird since I've literally made no changes to it. It happens at random times, so there is no pattern to it. I'm hoping the log file tells you something.

Reproduction Steps
Since it happens randomly, I can't reproduce it on command.

Hi zombiehunter,

Thanks for the report and the output log.

From the looks of it, the crash could be happening inside Unity's skinned mesh/rendering pipeline. It looks as though you are using mods, and based on that, it's possible that one of them could be using an outdated or incompatible custom asset that may be contributing to the issue.

I recommend backing up the save first, and removing the mods one at a time to help narrow down whether a specific mod is causing the issue. That is usually the fastest way to determine whether they are a cause.

A few other things worth trying would be to:
  • Verify game files through Steam
  • Disable overlays temporarily from Steam, Discord, Geforce Experience, etc.
  • Update or roll back drivers depending on when the crash started
  • Test on a fresh world/save if possible
  • Lower some of the graphic settings. Common ways to reduce graphic load are to reduce shadow quality, lower reflection quality, and enable DLSS or FSR upscaling. Also capping frames, if you have not done so. (I admit I did not check your log for settings)
I wouldn't call the lower settings a guaranteed fix, but if the issue is being triggered by rendering load, VRAM pressure, or a bad interaction with a modded asset, it can sometimes improve stability or at least help narrow down the cause.

Best,
Dollie

Hi Dollie,

Thanks for the quick response.
  • I have verified the game files through Steam and they are fine
  • I do not use overlays
  • I updated my nVidia drivers to the latest
I will run the game again for a while to see if it happens again. If so, I'll start removing the mods I'm using one by one to see if that is the cause.

Regarding the video settings, I've been running at these settings for a long time without issue as the crashes only recently started happening, so I'll save that option for last, if it is still happening after removing the mods.

Thanks again for your quick response, and I'll let you know how it goes.

One other thing to look into if removing mods doesn't solve the problem is to try going back to an older GPU driver (one that you know was working without a problem). It isn't unusual for GPU driver updates to cause problems in games and then you either need to go back a version or wait until an updated driver is released that fixes the issue.

So, I was doing the Higashi tower and the game crashed twice. Each time I removed a mod, after removing a mod before the playing session. I was able to finish the POI on the 3rd try.

Then, I went to do the Dishong tower. It crashed 4 times before I could finish it. The first 2 times, I removed another mod. After the 3rd crash, I rolled back my GPU driver to the previous version. So I tried the POI again. I got nearly to the top and then it crashed again. This time, I looked at the video settings in the nVidia app for the game. I noticed the upscaling was set to FSR, which I believe is for the AMD chip, which I don't have. I did not set it to that, and the game wasn't "optimized" in the app. So, I set it to optimize and this setting changed to nVidia DLSS. Other settings got changed as well.

Since then, about 3 playing sessions, it hasn't crashed so I thought I had fixed it. Well, it just crashed again while I was driving the 4x4.. I did not add any of the removed mods back in.

I've attached the log to see if there is any new info in there.

Thanks.

I saw a StackOverflow exception at the end, which had me thinking recursion that ran away. The available stack trace only showed calls to logging functions, which I thought was weird since something would be calling on those functions.

I gave your log file to Claude just see what it might tell us. It had some advice related to your Mods. (see attached)

I hope that helps in some way.

It may be that although you removed mods, they had still affected your save. It isn't always safe to remove mods in a current save. I'd suggest trying a new save with those mods removed (or perhaps with all mods removed as a temporary test) and see if you have problems. I'm not sure how frequently the crashes occur, but I imagine you'd know if it was working or not within a few game days. If it works fine, then you could add mods in one at a time (perhaps starting with the ones you removed that you thought fixed the problem) and see when you start getting crashes. Adding mods into a current save is usually safe, though the mods may not always work perfectly if they aren't there when you start a new save, so I'd still test with a new save each time just to be sure.

First, thanks very much for your responses. The info is very helpful.

I had been checking www.7daystodiemods.com for updates on the IZZY gun pack mod, but never saw anything there. After reading Claude's feedback, I went to NexusMods and saw that there is an update for v2.6. I have downloaded that and am starting a new save. We'll see how it goes for a while and I'll report back with the news.

Thanks again for your help!

UPDATE: On my new save, all was well until Day 6, where the game crashed again. It just stopped and closed. No log file. So, I turned off DLSS (it creates weird motion blur effects anyway) and turned the video settings down a notch. I am now on Day 15 and no crashes since. We'll see how it goes from here, and I'll post another update after a while.

Note that the crashes started with v2.6. The game never crashed before then.
