Crashes to desktop

Version
2.6 (b14)

Windows
7 Days has been randomly crashing to the desktop recently, which is weird since I've literally made no changes to it. It happens at random times, so there is no pattern to it. I'm hoping the log file tells you something.

Reproduction Steps
Since it happens randomly, I can't reproduce it on command.

Hi zombiehunter,

Thanks for the report and the output log.

From the looks of it, the crash could be happening inside Unity's skinned mesh/rendering pipeline. It looks as though you are using mods, and based on that, it's possible that one of them could be using an outdated or incompatible custom asset that may be contributing to the issue.

I recommend backing up the save first, and removing the mods one at a time to help narrow down whether a specific mod is causing the issue. That is usually the fastest way to determine whether they are a cause.

A few other things worth trying would be to:
  • Verify game files through Steam
  • Disable overlays temporarily from Steam, Discord, Geforce Experience, etc.
  • Update or roll back drivers depending on when the crash started
  • Test on a fresh world/save if possible
  • Lower some of the graphic settings. Common ways to reduce graphic load are to reduce shadow quality, lower reflection quality, and enable DLSS or FSR upscaling. Also capping frames, if you have not done so. (I admit I did not check your log for settings)
I wouldn't call the lower settings a guaranteed fix, but if the issue is being triggered by rendering load, VRAM pressure, or a bad interaction with a modded asset, it can sometimes improve stability or at least help narrow down the cause.

Best,
Dollie

Hi Dollie,

Thanks for the quick response.
  • I have verified the game files through Steam and they are fine
  • I do not use overlays
  • I updated my nVidia drivers to the latest
I will run the game again for a while to see if it happens again. If so, I'll start removing the mods I'm using one by one to see if that is the cause.

Regarding the video settings, I've been running at these settings for a long time without issue as the crashes only recently started happening, so I'll save that option for last, if it is still happening after removing the mods.

Thanks again for your quick response, and I'll let you know how it goes.

One other thing to look into if removing mods doesn't solve the problem is to try going back to an older GPU driver (one that you know was working without a problem). It isn't unusual for GPU driver updates to cause problems in games and then you either need to go back a version or wait until an updated driver is released that fixes the issue.
