Console Console modding

For those two, and other overhauls; very likely never. The tiny specs of the worst consoles have no chance of handling those properly, and consoles are very strict about modding anyway.

Yeah, unfortunately, consoles are limited in what they can handle and Sony and Microsoft are very strict on whether or not mods are even allowed and usually require those mods to be distributed directly from the devs, which wouldn't likely happen. So it's very unlikely to see mods on console at all. At best, you *might* someday see very small XML mods on console, but nothing at all like an overhaul mod similar to DF or UL.

As a side note, with Steam creating a new "console" of their own that will supposedly play every Steam game at 4k (with upscaling), it may end up being possible to use mods on that if you're determined to play on a console instead of a PC. No idea how much that will cost, though.

Are you referring to the Steam Machine? Isn't it supposed to be a “console-like” PC with PC architecture? At least that's what it says on the website.

Yes. It'll be Steam OS "console", which is why I said that mods might end up working on there. Not sure what else it can do beyond play their games.

I assume that the mods will be 100% compatible if it's a PC, but I imagine there will be restrictions with games that have anti-cheat software due to the operating system.

Yes on the steam machine it should be like playing on a normal PC, the full steam experience, it is a full PC with no restrictions and a desktop mode. So you can install windows as a secondary OS on it if you want to play on EAC protected servers or games. But overhaul mods like Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy and many others, do not work with EAC turned on anyways. So not a problem for you.

I am also sure that if the steam machine is a success that steam has an argument to make a deal with the devs to finally solve that issue with anti cheat and linux.

the PS6 is slated to have significant HP improvements. As is the new Xbox console. So I would say once the new consoles come out things may change.
Not likely for this game. As long as the game is also for the current gen consoles, it has to support their hardware even if newer consoles have better hardware. After all, PCs have better hardware but have to be limited by consoles. For their next game, if they don't make it for current gen consoles, then that game could be designed for the next gen console hardware.

There is one other crucial element that you have to remember. Sony and Microsoft
would have to claim responsibility for the security, of the accounts, personal
data, and network. For this you would realistically have to ask yourself, what
is in it for them, "longterm". What will it cost vs profit them "longterm".

With mods and potential modded operational files there is always the threat of breach, and theft.

Maybe they may be including a virtual machine and environment embedded on a ROM, go full
circle and go old school lowtech in order to run mods. Or marry streaming and a VM machine
to create an insulated environment making closed servers this time, to insulate the games, the
OS, and data from external access and manipulation. They may make them backward compatible.
But following the 31 year history, of closed and tightly controlled process, those seem like some long
odds.

Remember; at the rate they advance technology, there are an untold number advancing untechnology
to match. As an example, they are using Arduino devices embedded with simple ai to almost perfectly
spoof present and advancing security techniques at a hardware level. Yes, there are some other games
that have mods that they allow, but as a corporation, their main thought would be on the level of
control, and the investment in time and finance necessary to adapt.

Personally I am anxious to see, the outcome. I have followed technology, from the 286 and Dos to now.
So, fingers crossed, maybe they will change their working model, this time.
