@Vapid Actions,
No apology needed

I'm not a good writer and often fail to make my point clear. And when I do I generally come across as a cousin to a donkey, heh.
If you didn't play a16 I would really recommend that you take a look at a few vids for horde nights where they used a pole defense or a 'toothie' base. Quite night and day

(and if it looks like fun, and it
really was, you can always opt into a16.4 and give it a go yourself)
In general I agree w you about alternate methods of attaining 'rare' items. Just be aware that the history is that, in general, TFPs may not see it that way. For the specific "Stealth Build" I would argue that a can is a critical part of that build and leaving it entirely to rn-jebus isn't maybe the best design choice. But it ain't up to us
Seeing as all of this -is- an Alpha, and 'Balance' is always getting tweaked, you might consider making rules for yourself to bridge any gaps in the road.
For a17 I've had a rule that if I don't have 2 Beakers by lvl 100 I fake buy them from a trader. Haven't had to use it lately since the RWG update resulted in Pop-n-Pills being more common. Point being, don't kill your enjoyment by refusing to 'cheat' a bit. And, for me at least, if I have the rules down before starting a new playthrough then it doesn't feel quite so much like cheating.
Just an example bit here. I've had playthroughs, prior to a17.4, where I didn't have a Cooking Pot until I crafted one in a forge. Which was -totally- ok. There was a way to attain it, beside rn-jebus. So for me my personal 'rules', and modlets, are sort of like that, they keep a playthrough from stalling out.
