A New Chapter for The Fun Pimps and 7 Days to Die

That's apparently hotly debatable. I think the downward trend for the IP began with FO4, though cracks were showing even during the Black Isle/Interplay days. FO3 had "aggressively mediocre" main & side stories & quests and characters for the most part compared to Interplay/Black Isle's Fallouts and New Vegas, but was fun and interesting regardless. BGS excels (or used to) at creating interesting worlds to explore. (Now, it's over-reliant on procedural generation, imo.)

I don't think BGS was ever all that great at story and characterization though it had its moments. New Vegas is a great example of a fruitful partnership. Obsidian wasn't at all experienced at creating open worlds to explore, but exceled at story and characterization. Each was complementary to the other back then. Were they to put their heads together on a Fallout game -- BGS handling map creation and possibly vignettes; Obsidian handling worldbuilding, story and characterization -- it could well turn out to be among the best RPGs of the entire series, imo. Not at all likely to happen, but there we are.
I'm, admittedly, a turn-based purist. I tried to play Fallout 3 several years after it came out (I bought it for <$10 for the complete edition on Steam) and I hated the gameplay so much that I never even tried to play New Vegas (which I bought at the same time.) Granted, I don't like any Bethesda game. I've bought several of them, trying to figure out what it is that makes them so popular, and I honestly don't get it.

Open World RPGs (at least story-lite ones, I enjoyed Witcher 3 before I got bored with the open world stuff...I just can not ignore map markers, and clearing out level 3 bandit camps at level 20 isn't fun) just really aren't my thing, I guess.

I hear ya. Publishers and studios have gone nuts with the open world thing. Don't they know the bigger the map the more space there is to fill? What are they going to fill it with beyond the main story, quests and side quests? They've generally chosen to fill it with "filler content" in large part if not most part. A lot more emphasis on focus and scope would work wonders there, imo.

It's funny, but I don't particularly like turn-based myself, preferring first person/no pauses in combat, etc., though I put up with it to play the older RPG titles I've been interested in. I actually couldn't bring myself to play BG3 or Claire Obscura -- as popular as they are -- because they're turn-based. lol I could probably get used to it, but just don't particularly want to. Witcher 3 I enjoyed immensely because I'm not a completionist. If I saw a question mark, I might check it out once I got close to it, but it was just a bandit camp, I generally turned right around and went as far as I could in the opposite direction. :) Map markers and checklists and the like are among the banes of modern gaming, afic.

@InfiniteWarrior
Thank you for breaking it down. I saved it for future reference.
It reminds me of The Asylum. The production company that does the mockbusters.
I first noticed them when I saw an ad for "The Hobbits" then "Atlantic Rim".
Then I did a Wiki list check of the movies they had done. Hilarious and disconcerting at the same
They did an interview, and said they had never lost any money, on any of the movies in their
catalog.

I'm kind of the opposite. I prefer turn-based and suffer through third/first person to play games I'm interested in, particularly now that I have problems with my hands.

And I am 100% an obsessive completionist, which is part of why open-world games are generally not fun for me. 😆

I like turn based, real-time, and real-time with pause. As long as the combat is done well, the type doesn't matter much to me. If I am doing stuff with NPC companions, I prefer turn based or the ability to pause so I can tell them what to do without trying to rush.

I also like to complete everything in games, and an open world can sometimes make that frustrating, though it depends on the game design. My biggest issue with open world is that you can often feel like you aren't progressing in any meaningful way. It is why I like quests that follow a story or other progression.

Here is an old, reference for the switch from in your hand games to the digital revolution.
The thing is it wasn't even a game company that did it.
"Netflix" you order from the catalog, get a movie then return it. One of the younger guys
that worked with me invested heavily in it, and became a millionaire.
The others were Blockbuster Video & Hollywood Video, and my favorite Funcoland.
Known today as Gamestop. It's been a long time coming.

Does someone from The Fun Pimps (or adjacent) know if the 3.0 release will experience delays because of the merger?

Thanks
Yes. As in, yes, someone from The Fun Pimps knows the answer to this question. :p

With the merger comes some planned logistical and technology changes for the devs. It’s not generally stuff that concerns end users, though. I have no updates on timing. Just know that their day to day work continues on features, content, and improvements for V3, and things to come after V3, like bandits. As with previous releases, the full release notes for V3 are being prepared.

I hope the notes will be in may:love:

I'm glad to see you hanging around the forum! :)

Oh, so there's actually a release date for version 3.0?
I would be absolutely thrilled to get some more news on everything else that's still happening this year!
The closest to anything official was from faatal back before the merger, saying that they plan to have both 3.0 and 4.0 out by the end of the year. Unless I missed something, they haven't given anything more specific than that. Based on past experience with TFP, I wouldn't be surprised if 3.0 is by the end of the year, but I have doubts that 4.0 will be out by the end of the year. I'm estimating at least March 2027 for 4.0, but that's just my opinion and it's far enough away that my opinion will likely need to change as we get nearer.

Given the logic in numbering versions it migh even be possible we see 4.0 this year but 3.0 the next year.

I think we’ll see 3.0 at the end of June or in July, but I don’t believe we’ll get 4.0 just 5 or 6 months later there’s basically no chance. Even if I saw bandits, I’d probably think it was a hallucination. Since the guys teamed up with Behaviour, maybe it could happen? Getting 2.5, 3.0, and 4.0 all in almost the same year would actually be something.

I don't think teaming up with BI will have any effect on 7D2D development for months. Also, faatal doesn't need anybody's help, he can code bandits quite well by himself and he has better inside knowledge of the whole game. It just takes time.

so...is the problem (in your estimation) that they just don't have enough faatals to go around? From my point of view, the guy in charge of getting Bandits done, has been working on everything else for years. Bandits are not in the game because they have not been consistently worked on...they seem to have been treated by TFP as not a priority.

then there is also the conversation that many of you think "bandits will suck" and won't really be great for gameplay...then why have we been waiting 10 years? why did TFP make them a major update on the roadmap? Y'all keep saying trust the process....but...you don't. there's some cognitive dissonance at work here.
