PC V3.0 Sandbox Siege Dev Diary

I think what's being missed is that I view all of this through the lens of multiplayer. You can adjust settings all day long and be happy if you play solo or in a small (tiny) group, but multiplayer servers with any kind of population inevitably run it heavily modded and make it even worse with the silliness (teleports, increased loot, pay to win). I mean, show me a multiplayer server (at least 25 slots) that runs a server with all the rpg elements turned off. This might happen with the sandbox update, and we'll see. But @4sheetzngeegles had it right when he said I was looking for the free roaming, early bleak survival feel the game once had. He seems to be one of the few who understand what I'm saying. Most others seem to be in the "omgz don't say nutn bad 'bout mah game!" mode.

I have a question regarding POIs.

The really large pois meaning the Excavation Pit, and the other open area pois.
What setting can I change if any, to allow, Biome spawn to occupy that open
area? I go back an forth through movies and series, and try to recreate scenarios
just to experience it first hand.

I would like to use biome spawn as a filler, to recreate the WD pit when the trailer
fell in and they demolished the wall for the encampment.

There are going to be servers that use many different combinations of settings and/or mods. It comes down to finding one that is closest to what you want. That can take a lot of time, depending what you're looking for. It's one of the issues when you want to use a server instead of P2P or running your own server. That's not likely to ever change, though.

It's crazy that nobody can find servers running those golden-days of the game configs that are so superior to the modern state of the game. I wonder why? There are mods that remove the progressing, questing, trading, and learn by reading aspects of the game. If the game really did go in a bad direction starting with Alpha 11 and continuing to today, I'd think that most servers out there would be running games without all the RPG and progression crap that has ruined the open world roaming survival vibe--

unless....

It’s more of a problem with the books, not the progression itself. I remember a few years ago I found a shotgun and a pistol in the first trash I came across, and I immediately lost the desire to keep playing.

You can still find things like a fire axe, a crossbow, a pistol, or a hunting knife on day one, but they’re very rare. What I really miss are some unique items, like that axe that was basically a stone axe but had a different name I can’t remember it exactly. It’s probably still in the game, just extremely rare. There could definitely be more items like that, but I think something was mentioned about legendary weapons or tools, so that kind of solves the problem.

People laugh that you can craft a pipe pistol but can’t make bacon and eggs without reading books. Okay then, let’s unlock all recipes and find cool weapons right away, preferably on day one sounds like great fun. What’s even the point of a loot stage then? Let’s have fun.

I don't get it: You say you lost interest immediately because you found a shotgun early in the game.

But then you propose that you should be able to find even more of those powerful weapons right away. Isn't that greatly increasing the chance to make you loose the desire to keep playing?

TazasStoneAxe is still in but lootprobability very low indeed.

groupRottenChest03
groupOldWestChest02

Are the only lootgroups it could pop in with very low probability.

Because the server browser is hot garbage? You can barely search for "I haz mods", doesn't really make finding ANYTHING easy, much less an "oldschool" server.

Yeah, it's still in the game. I got it my last game. Not that it is really worth anything, though. It just gets tossed in a crate and forgotten about. I don't sell it because it's rare to find, but I also don't use it. And, yeah... they said they want to add legendary (unique) items to the game. Hopefully that happens.

I'm pretty sure the last part of what they said was sarcasm. :)

I'll entertain this a little further; I offer you a formalized challenge for what you're implying here.
Paraphrasing your implication, "there are no, or very few, servers that provide an old-school experience."
The challenge is: show me you can actually make such a claim.
Not "show me there are only a handful", just that it could somehow be done.

In simple terms:
Take a snapshot of servers, from whatever public tool you like, or the in-game server search itself. A moment in time, having some hundreds of servers "online", selected somehow "fairly".
From those servers, count the number of modded ones (modding a server is another barrier to entry, that number will work as our denominator, modded_servers)
From those, figure out the set of servers that specifically and significantly modifies either the quest system, or the magazine crafting system, or both. This is not "oldschool" specifically, but I'm making the search task simpler by taking out the subjectivity of "oldschool", these two modifications are likely components of such. The sum of these servers will work as our numerator, potential_OS_servers)

Provide the ratio of (potential_OS_servers/modded_servers), but show us the work - focus mostly on the how, the actual numbers "at this moment" are relatively useless.

Should be easy enough for a maths guy?

I failed again at basic reading 101. o_O

lol…first off it was just a joke and secondly the point of the joke was that if old school was as desired and popular and better than current vanilla as some people who post on game forums like to claim, it wouldn’t matter if the browser is hot garbage and nobody would issue a challenge to someone else to try and estimate the ratio because the clear majority would be old-school vibe servers. That’s the punchline. The challenge would be to find a server that still implements magazines, storms, and biome progression.

I took a page from your book and when RyanX said they couldn’t find an old school vibe server I magnified that to the hyperbolic extreme “nobody” can find one. There’s probs a few out there maybe and despite being a maths guy, the browser is hot garbage and I’d rather not involve myself with browsing it. Challenge declined, thank you 😂

Good for you :P So, you were just proving you're not constrained by any BI HR/PR, good good ... :)

This isn’t a job and I don’t work for BI. I know Hammer’s hoping I eventually get banned by the enigmatic and alleged future community manager who should be announced any moment now….

Maybe his wish will come true. 😘

hoping I eventually get banned
Well, for what it's worth, I hope not. ;) And I don't think Hammer does either, but that's just a gut feeling from reading your public interactions ... (an example of how to make an unverifiable claim sound honest and unverifiable at the same time? .. ;) )

To be fair, I would think that most people who want that old school feel of the game wouldn't be looking to play on a public or large scale server, because the other people would inevitably ruin the old school feel, internet people being what we are.

Yeh, it kinda feels better suited for a solo / duo experience anyway, a lone wolf -type of deal. Even if the public players were Good People (tm), it would be a different dynamic. No idea how common this is among people who pine for the golden days, but resonates with me ... :P
