Retractable ladders

For me, I don't see any value for solo, co-op, or PVP beyond aesthetics. It would be a nice addition for aesthetics, but it just doesn't really offer anything else. Zombies won't reach your static ladder on the side of the building as it is, and players can get around your defenses with ease.
I would say it could lead to a scenario where players are scrambling to try and get up while also trying to retract the ladder before whatever is chasing them starts climbing and stops the player from raising the ladder. Damage could also stop the ladder from retracting up.

I don't understand your critics... it's the same thing as the drawbridge.
When you have to activate it from the other side you can still reach it right?

I wouldn't say I'm being critical. I'm saying I don't understand the need and am trying to understand. I would have to play with the drawbridge to see. I've not used a drawbridge in solo play (never needed it on my own bases) though I have seen them connected to motion detectors in multiplayer where they would lower themselves and I'm pretty sure I asked if that was the pattern here...?

But I think I see what you're saying. I think you're saying you could click on the ladder from the ground to get it to extend down to you. The reason I thought that might be odd is my impression was those devices weren't designed to be lowered from the ground. Again, I could be wrong as I've never lived in a place that had one so I've not seen exactly how they work in real life. I thought they were on a spring so that they might lower when somebody needed to escape.

Okay, but how is that an improvement? Why would you use something that could leave you scrambling when you can just jump now?

The value is that you don't have to put two frames down and jump and then collect them back every time you want to enter your base.
You don't need to put down any frames right now. A ladder starting on block 3 is safe and you can reach that even without parkour. With parkour, you can make it higher if you want. I never put down frames to get in my base and even my horde base has the ladder there and have never had a zombie manage to use the ladder.

Noobish excitement. Immersion. The laughter of wee children.

You can jump 3 blocks high without parkour?
I'll have to try that. Maybe I'm missing something here...

You only need to jump 1m high to reach a ladder that is on the third block. I do prefer to put it on the fourth block, but I also like parkour. But the third block is safe. Zombies used to climb over themselves when they bunched together, but they really don't do that now. And even then, they never managed to get onto my ladders.

If you are still concerned, you can also just make a ladder attached to a one block wide tower and then jump across a gap. But I've never had a reason to do anything like that.

You can't jump to the 3rd block, but grabbing the ladder at the 3rd block level is no problem. In both of my bases, the ladder starts at the 3rd block, and I can jump there without parkour, even with a broken leg.

My main base always has a drawbridge. I feel more at ease with it. It's not connected to any sensors. Sensors are usually used by players who want to access the base via transport. I don't have that need; it's easier for me to activate it manually from the ground (it's on block level 6), and by the time I climb the stairs, it's lowered.
