Helpful perk rework

Magazines just took away the randomness. I remember one of my early games before magazines. It was the third week, I had learned a ton of recipes, but I couldn't do anything with steel. I couldn't find a crucible or a recipe for it. The same thing was true for weapons, sometimes a recipe would drop on the first day, and sometimes you couldn't find it even on the fourth week.

Both mechanics have their pros and cons.

This is not the first time I read about the game while sitting at the base. What do you do there? Between harvesting and planting the garden, you need 2 hours of real time. Cooking. You throw ingredients into the fire and it cooks, you don't have to look at it. And cooking a batch of food also takes more than an hour.

What do you do while sitting at the base?
Yeah, the randomness is the thing I miss. It is funny that people complain about magazines because they are too random, yet it is the lack of randomness from before magazines that I miss. Finding a specific schematic in the first few days could change how your game played, while not finding it until very late would have a different impact on your game. It made things more interesting.

But I also like magazines and I don't mind not getting stuck with being unable to find a alternative I need until very late in the game.

In MP Coop the garden already needs quite some time to harvest and reseed every time. Cooking all the different stuff to get a lot of bonuses from the food is also a bit of a time killer. Keeping the forges, chemstation and cement mixers running. Due to the workstations always running, there is a lot of screamer traffic all the time which leads to repairs needed on the base. And in our case, our base mom likes to build big. Crafting ammod and first aid basically all the time. And ofc mining.

Okay.... Food pretty much all had the same "bonuses". It feeds you and some adds or subtracts from your water. Other than that, it is just the amount of food it provides. You absolutely do not need to make more than one kind of food in this game, which for most people will be whatever you have the easy resources to make (often vegetable stew or hobo stew, though a couple others are common), with the occasional extras just to use up the canned food you find.

Harvesting crops takes little time unless you go insane with your farm. You can easily have enough food for everyone with about 6 plots give or take per person, 3 corn and 3 potato with mushrooms on the sides. Even at 8 players, that is under 50 plots and half that it so in mushrooms. At a single click per plot to harvest, you can finish harvesting in a couple of minutes. Planting takes a bit longer, but you can basically do it all in under 5 minutes for 8 people. Yes, people can make larger farms even though it isn't necessary, and some people just have to have pumpkins and blueberries and stuff, but those aren't really worth using. At quest, it should take under 10 minutes no matter what for 8 people.

Forges take seconds to reload. Same for chem stations and cement mixers.

Screamers only spawn at most every 21 minutes in a single area, and it can easily be 30+ minutes between spawns. I can kill screamers in under 15 seconds from the time I hear them, usually without them calling anyone. If they do call others, I can kill them all in under a minute easily.

Ammo and dust aid can be done in seconds as well.

Building takes time. That is really the only thing that takes any real amount of time.

Well in 15 seconds, she can be happy to find them IF she is near the screamer when they come, due to the size of the base. Cotton takes most of the time for the garden, cloth is always needed as we like explosive arrows, those need duct tape for every single arrow. We constantly use beer for stun resist. So yeah, the garden is already a huge time eater. We are 5 players. And ofc we have that one guy that for some reason doesn´t like to lock his inventory slots and has a dump chest that our base mom then sorts into the rights chest. (it´s her spouse, in case you wonder why someone would do this for him) And ofc mining, there is always a shortage on something.

The different food boni are ofc not vanilla. We basically only play vanilla once to the point where we see all the changes.

If you already have a dump chest setup, just use those for the whole crew then; everyone dropping everything into those on arrival. Doesn't add much to the base mom, but takes a ton off everyone else running around sorting things... :)

Save your time, magazines are a no go for us. Even if we were literally the only ones not liking it, nothing could coninbce us otherwise.
And what does it have to do with the current topic? OP was asking about cooking and farming skill points, not magazines.
Also, your replies sound like one of those "goodbye" posts that are a not permitted by the forum rules.

If you need to vent against the devs don't use other people's threads spamming OT posts, I'm kind of tired of having to filter through all your bantering posts to read about the actual topic. Just write your goodbye thread and get banned... since you don't care, what difference would it make?

@OP: sorry for bashing in on your topic which is actually interesting.

For what is worth I agree with Riamus about how to handle those points: focus on the LotL skill and put just one point on Master Chef. Then put one point in whatever weapon you like and you'll be golden for at least the first week I think.

Nah, we use quick stash mod usually.

@Jost Amman Backseat mod? Apply if you want to be a real one.

You play in a strange way.
I have a garden of 140 cells. After I created a seed stock of 140 pieces, I grew corn, potatoes, hops, blueberries and yuca once. And I still haven't used up this stock. Now I grow only cotton - I need a lot of duct tape for grenade launcher ammunition.
I make food in batches of 6 stacks, considering that I play about 1-2 hours a day, then this is enough for me for several weeks.
I get bones for glue in the wasteland by killing wolves and bears, and at the same time I get a lot of other things. Including a huge amount of ammunition, which saves me from producing them.
I also do not produce first aid kits, my stock is only increasing, although the server has a 40% loot drop rate. Lately I even stopped taking them.

In general, everything that can be produced in large batches, I produce in large batches. That way I don't have to constantly monitor workbenches, concrete mixers and chemical laboratories. Load, turn on and forget about it for an hour, or even several hours. The same 30 packs of gunpowder are prepared in several hours, as are 30 packs of gasoline.

@Riamus "Stay at home" players or base moms also need to be able to do everything. Screamers, wandering hordes, blood moon needs crafting skills for their prefered weapon for example. And ofc they do go out in POI´s aswell quite often since we have the magazine system, even in MP Coop they need to go out as it is a pain in the butt and super slow to get all the magazines you need for the stay at home players and it clogs up your inventory a lot, unless you want to force them to use the same gear as the others, which isn´t really an option tbh. You can´t just stay at home all the time. Everyone needs a good build in the current version of the game no matter their playstyle.

Magazines ruined the freedom to play however you like.
"Magazines ruined the freedom to play however you like." - pure facts!
