V2.0 Mining - Just bad luck or design

I see that one of the changes is ore concentrations vary by biome. In the past you could dig down to 15 blocks above bedrock and then tunnel in any direction and eventually hit some ore (Iron and Lead were pretty common).

This was useful in that you could adventure during the day and then tunnel at night safely for resources and XP.

In my first 2.0 random gen playthrough, this is gone. I've created a web of tunnels all through the starting forest biome and found only a small pocket (< 50 units of nitrate). I've resorted to using the surface ore markers for resources. It's certainly going to impact ammo production as I'll be devoting some mornings to mining and not constantly adventuring. I'll not have stockpiles of 7.62 for day 14 that's for sure.

Is the lack of subsurface ore (even Fe deposits, which were common) in my random gen bad luck or design?

In the past, ore was biome specific. You could probably find all ore in all biomes, but certain resources were scarce or didn't exist at all outside of their core biomes. Back then the surface node indicators did not exist either, and you had to randomly dig tunnels to find it.

Since a few Alpha's ago, (a17 I think, but maybe a18?), the meta has not been to randomly dig tunnels for ore. This is because they added the surface node with a guaranteed deposit underneath it. You look at the map, find the markers for the ore you wish to harvest, and then go digging at the surface node. The subsurface ore you speak of was more rare outside of these nodes with a surface indicator.

You can still have stockpiles of ore. You can still spend your nights mining. It sounds like you never got the memo about the way ore mining changed years ago.

The good ole days of having a big single and secure mine changed. I have several mines now that are specific to the resource I need. This of course means you have to secure each one to keep the Z's off your back at night while mining, and I hope you have enough friends playing the same server to help with land claiming if not you can have a shared mine, but its the overall game. I find the map markers for ore and I place my own Waypoints on my map to where from my base each closest resource is as I adventure and then I mine each one for the ore we all need. I remeber those days of having access almost every ore from one mine and reaching bedrock and making a small base to store ore and food and water to keep going....

I've only played two maps so far but the ore deposits in the forest seem a little rarer then in 1.0--or at the very least differently placed.

I have found most of the ore's that at our levels we are using in the Forrest Biome "so far" .. Clay, Rock, Nitrate, Coal, and Iron all not too far spaced apart "so far". The mini map is a great help to find where they are. The only one I havent found yet but I am not focused on it is Lead and Oil shade- but you need the desert for that.

Here is a quick reference for using the mini map to find them if you need it.
  • Black spots: Towers of stone or (sometimes) cave entrances.
  • Grey squares: Stone boulders.
  • White squares: Potassium Nitrate deposits.
  • Small Brown squares: Iron Ore deposits.
  • Small Black squares: Coal Ore deposits.
  • Small Blue squares: Lead Ore deposits.
  • Light Brown: Oil Shale (mainly found in deserts).

Yes, using the map is what led me to conclusion that ore deposits seemed rarer in the forest. I have seen less iron, coal, and nitrite than I was used to seeing in 1.0.

Did they change this for 2.0? Oil shale was only in the desert previously.

As far as the availability of ore in 2.0, since they made certain ores more common in certain biomes (coal in the snow, for example), you may not see certain ores as often as in the past in a specific biome. They may also be grouped more than in the past, though I haven't really looked at the ores in 2.0 yet, so not positive if the grouping they did for trees impacted ores at all.

I sometimes go in and change the colours. My eyesight not being what it use to be I sometimes had a hard time finding them. Especially in desert for oil shale.

I said "mainly" because in previous versions we found Oil Shale in industrial Oil tanks and things that have it, so it can be found outside the desert but just not in the same quantity.

I will pay more attention as I play later on today to see if I also get that impression. I have been focused on the game and trying not to die lol ..

Oh. Yeah, any POI can have any ore added to the design. Those just aren't the normal ore that you find under ore nodes and will always appear in those POI unless set as a part.

UPDATE - Now it's day 9 and I have a Qual 6 Steel pickaxe. Tunnelling is super fast. I've found an underground Iron and another underground Nitrate deposit. However, unlike V1, they are really far apart, leading me to believe that there has been a change to how underground deposits are generated - much less common than in V1. Also, I haven't found any deposits containing multiple ores, which was also common in V1.

Regardless, it's one of the things I like about the new versions. The changes force me to adapt how I play to match the new rules. So far, just slowed me down in progression as hunting and mining take time away from trader quests and looting. So, I have less ammo and haven't had time to build a cool main base/fort.

That said, once I get Cement Mixers, I have a ton of stone ready.....

Is there a reason you aren't just targeting surface nodes?

Used to I could find Coal nodes all day long in 1.4 in the forest, but now I have to farm the edge of the burnt forest to get coal, during early game days.

That was their intention, though the actual nodes will be found more often in the snow from what I heard. You should still find them in the forest, but less often.

Mining the surface deposits at night is risky. The screamers come quickly and their spawn can dig down or find the mine entrance easily. That said in V2 I am mining the surface nodes during the day, taking time away from trader quests.

At night I am tunnelling around really only for XP. That said. I have found Fe and K deposits, so only Coal and Pb day mining is necessary now.

My main reason for the post was to gain some validation that underground deposits in V2 are more rare than in V1 by design, not just some weird artifact of my random gen seed.

You can dig through the xml for this.

they added the surface node with a guaranteed deposit underneath it
I remember that, it was in 17, It was when TFP adjusted the ore to help people with
color vision deficiency to be able to play the game, and differentiate which ore
was which. They also added the unique shapes as a backup.
