Is Harvesting trees ever good at the 300/600 health stage?

How do you all plant your commercial forest reserves?  I plant them dress right dress, tree, 3 empty spaces, next tree, row after row.  I wait till they have at least 900 life before harvesting, and this lets me replant as I go, and potentially double my forest size each generation.

So, what does everybody else do?

Honestly I have not had a game where I need to replant trees.  But if I was building from the ground up, then harvest at 900 or 1200 if I was out and about too long.

And no issue harvesting young if needed.

I harvest based on needs.  If I need wood quickly, I just go ahead and harvest any tree I can find.  If I don't, I let any trees I planted to keep growing.

All of this is assuming I need to plant trees.  Like Javabean867, I don't always need player trees so I can get most of what I need through just exploring areas.  If I do need a source of trees, I tend to plant them near my mines so I will go out and do both activities (mining, tree felling) when a resource gathering day rolls around.

I replant the seed randomly, anywhere but near my base. No need for forestry, as there are enough anywhere..

I build near a trade. Can be a POI if there's one, but mainly from scratch

Haven't made a tree farm in a long while; they're laggy. When I did, I'd usually plant at one area and harvest in another; letting it mostly just be until I needed some. If I needed a lot, I'd wipe it clean ofc, mostly fully grown trees by then. Not by decision, just by it having aged "passively".

But I'm the kinda guy who'll cringe at 'tubers spending time picking up their precious 5 frames. In the time you fudged around trying to pick up the frames, you'd have harvested a full tree, and passively crafted triple the frames from that.

I travel on foot a lot, nose to the ground looting trash and eggs. If I come across loot with enough sta to cap out while looting, I'll take a tree/stump first to lower the sta for the loot. Weird optimizations, but it fills my needs for wood for early game, and late game it's just a matter of wiping out yet another forest.

I wouldn't really do large structures out of wood, that layer of upgrades isn't earning much XP and "large" usually means "repetitive" - so there's little risk of misplacements after the initial design phase. And cobble is easy to knock down at the gamestage for "large" anyway.

4k hours in and I have never planted a tree. I do use the mod that turns off production when nothing is cooking/smelting though so that helps.

@WarMongerian

You left off one option. Do you not plant trees and why?

I don't plant, I remove the seeds from tree loot, I disable the growth algorithm in the plants.

Not because I dislike it or because I play single player. I do this to take out a process to lighten

some of the processing that producing something I would not miss, to play the game.

Some may say it doesn't cause any conflict, but if that is the case, then it would not create lag

when done in volume.

Harvesting trees is good at any stage of growth. More "Tree HP" simply means more resource harvest. Trees are harvested for a variety of reasons: to improve visibility, to allow construction, to remove clipping through POIs, and yes to harvest resources.

From a comment, the poll context seems to be focused on a player planting a forest, and at what stage is best to harvest the forest. It obviously depends on the needs and character skills of the player. Min/maxing resources per swing and time to collect resources are two is ways to optimize harvest.

However, if time is important (saving swings) a player should factor in the planting and growing time.  Which means that planting a forest is the least efficient way to gather wood. (time planting, time growing, time harvesting).  Ad hoc tree harvesting at whatever growth stage will always be more efficient even with the travel time costs.

I do see why players choose to plant forests but as others have it mentioned, planting a forest is not necessary at all.

NOTE: With an old clunker PC like mine, I do not like the performance hit of a planted forest.  If I did plant a forest it would not be near the base to avoid the performance hit.

It's rare to plant trees in my games, but if we do, we let them fully grow.  If you're going to plant trees for wood, then you just plan ahead.  You shouldn't be planting trees when you need wood immediately.  It should be in preparation ahead of time so they are ready when you need them.  I wouldn't bother planting trees if I was just going to chop them down early.  There are plenty of trees in the game already.  It takes more time to run between trees that the game places than between trees you place when you place them next to each other, but not enough to be a big deal.  I'll usually just chop trees the game placed and never worry about planting my own.  Only if I'm doing some major construction project and need a ton of wood will I worry about planting trees.  And something like that is planned, so there's plenty of time to let them grow all the way.

All the trees I end up planting become strictly decorative because usually some things happen like in my last game.

1. I decided to remove all the trees from view of each base I built for reasons.

2. Whenever I went nest harvesting I cut down a tree for every egg I found cause I thought it’d be fun.

Doing those 2 things meant I never had to cut down my privacy trees. There’s just so many trees to farm even if I needed to cut mine I’d let them grow full. Since I took the time to plant might as well get as much as I can out of it.

I generally just chop stumps and an occasional dead tree. Much of the wood I need I get going through POIs. I usually don't build bases from scratch. I do waste a second or two picking up those 5 frames.

Welcome to the thread.

Do you folks fortify an existing PoI, or build from scratch?

I swap it up.

Thought the first bloodmoon night is typically a secured (i.e. concrete / cobblestone) POI I just used to take them out a few at a time and then move to my actual base location.

If I find a good POI in my starter town(s), I will use it.  If I can't, I think about building my own horde base.

Sometimes I combine both my horde base and main base, other times they are separate.

Though with V2.0 and the biome progression changes, I am thinking V2.0 I will start making the desert more into my final base once I can survive that area.

When I play solo, I usually plant a small forest of 100-200 trees somewhere near the base. When playing on a server, this does not work, the admin has disabled tree seeds (old game bugs).

Do you folks fortify an existing PoI, or build from scratch?
I'm building from scratch, I got used to it after playing on a server, where the rules prohibit placing a claim or sleeping bag in existing POIs.

I almost never harvested planted trees at less than 1200 health, but I'll chop down preexisting trees regardless of health..  And I pretty much always have a tree farm of 100 trees minimum.  I know people say they effect performance, but I've never really noticed it.

That said, as with most things, I seem to use a lot more resources than most people that post here.  I'll easily use several hundred thousand wood in a playthrough.  Stacks of 500 frames seem to disappear in an instant.

In a single player game this can be noticed very rarely. But on servers where each player has forest plantings it is very noticeable.
Interesting.  I'm never heard anyone say that before.  It would explain why I've not really encountered it, since I only play single player.
