PC Why exactly aren't bandits in?

I've only just stated using these forums so I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, but why exactly aren't bandits in yet?

This probably sounds like a bait post but it isn't, I just wanna know the specifics really, like, is it that every time they go to add bandits, they run into some sorta big conflict with how they'd work with something in the game?

Excellent question, and digging through the forum would get you that answer(ish) But what it comes down to is that the development cycle didn't allow the bandits to be added in yet.  From my reckoning they wanted to work on art assets, finishing game systems like the quest progression, enemy ai, loot progression, and generally making the game run more smoothly.

They did internally test bandits, but found that the ai for them was not where they wanted it.

And so once the other systems are in a place where they want them, adding new entities into the game will be  a lot easier.

But i'm sure a lot of other people will take the jump all over this with their ideas as well lol.

They aren't ready for public release yet.  AI needs a good bit of work, as do many other aspects of the game that will be supporting or integrating them.

So far the only release that they worked towards adding bandits to was Alpha 21, and it was quite clear during development that they were not going to be ready in time, so they got pushed off until later. It isn't like they have been advertising that bandits are going to be added every release.

Currently they are on the roadmap for Update 2 (v3.0). This was originally slated for release Q2 2025, but I personally would not anticipate it happening before Q4 2025.

When bandits were first conceived they were hard coded to wield sharp sticks.  It has taken some time to fix that.

Yes, I know.  Don't correct me.

As other have said, they just aren't ready.  Better to wait until they are in good shape than to add them and have them be horrible.  The roadmap shows when they'll be added.  They are currently not working on bandits at all because they are working on the items for 2.0.  Once 2.0 is done, then they will start work on bandits again.

man...when I asked about Bandits a few weeks ago I was assured that they are "in a good place"...almost ready. Just need fine tuning...what changed?

You are getting answers from people who are not devs and often have little to no inside information (this includes from moderators).  What one person thinks to be a good place, another may think still needs a lot of work.  There are also a lot of pieces to making bandits work.  The bandits themselves may be fine, while there may still be a lot of other things that still to be finished before they can be added.  One person might consider bandits as a character being ready to go to be what they are talking about, while others may consider all the pieces - AI, animations, art, combat stuff like dodging and taking cover, etc.

The devs said bandits were not being worked on right now and they will be worked on after 2.0 is out.  They obviously aren't going to release 3.0 immediately after 2.0 is released.  The schedule on the roadmap shows it'll take probably 6-9 months after 2.0 before 3.0 is released.  That should give you a good idea of how much still needs to be completed.

It would be great to know who is staff, who is a trusted voice, and who is not. I have gone thru this before on here with other people. "he don't know" no..."he don't know" ...no...the mod is full of poop...etc etc.

roll back to around page 192-193 in the current dev diary if you want to see the conversation and who was in it.

Is 6-9 months too generous an estimate for the delay for this part?

side question: was dedicated servers a part of 2.0 or was it a, non roadmap add on, that might be too ambitious to do soon? or some other explanation?

I'm a Moderator, so it meganoth and Crater. I am also a tester, so I have access to play test builds before the public sees them. My statements are based on my experiences and discussions with QA staff and developers. So far as I can recall, the only test build that had bandits enabled was for a21.

People like Jugginator and Wretched Dollie are part of the QA team, and may be staff. They work more in-depth with the devs directly on testing and working out the causes for bugs.

Then you have those like faatal, Prime, Hated ect. Those guys are developers, and have the Fun Pimps Staff notation in their profile.

thank you.

Are there people on here who work for TFP but are not posting as staff? (sorry to ask... just trying to be thorough)

The roadmap had 3.0 as being Q2 2025.  Since 2.0 was supposed to be Q4 2024 and the last they have said was that it would be the end of Q1 2025, we are 1-2 quarters behind (3-6 months).  3.0 was scheduled for 6 months after 2.0 on the roadmap.  That means that we should be seeing it now in either late Q3 or else in Q4 assuming no additional delays.  So we are looking at about 6-9 months.  Now, if you want to assume more delays, maybe you should give it 9-12 months, but it's all guess work.  It's up to you what you personally think is a good time estimate as no one can tell you what is or isn't the correct estimate.  I'm sure even if the devs gave a date right now, even they would be guessing.  If you're looking for a concrete timeframe, you won't get one.

Crossplay (I assume that is what you mean) is still scheduled as part of 2.0 and is on the roadmap.

Not trying to be negative. Just good at it I guess.

Concrete info would be a dream...something more substantial than wet tissue paper should be achievable though...any effort at all really.

I get what you are saying...I think. It's what I would call the PC timeline: There is no timeline, there is just a list of Official things to accomplish, a list of things they are not telling anyone they are adding or changing, no one knows when anything will actually get done...and if they do...they ain't saying. (about right?)

I did not mean Crossplay as we have it...I was refering to dedicated servers. thanks for your time.

You'll never see concrete info unless they tell us the day of or day before release (which I'm not sure they have ever done).  The roadmap gives you estimated dates, but it has not been updated.  That means you need to adjust those dates based on the delay for 2.0.  The roadmap specifically states dates are subject to change.  It's how TFP works and expecting any different will just leave you upset. Better to just accept that this is how they do things and not get hung up on dates.  The roadmap does tell what they plan to add and what update those will be added.  They may add minor things in the mix that aren't listed, such as bug fixes, but the major things are on the roadmap.  And I'm pretty sure they are trying to stay as close to the timeline they provided as possible.  But when you develop software, things come up that you don't expect.  Bugs that are very hard to track down, things that don't work the way you thought they would, etc.  They can't promise any dates.  Developers who do end up releasing stuff that is unfinished.  It's better to release things when they are ready than to force something out early.

You are still talking about Crossplay, which is listed on 2.0.  They just got the initial part of Crossplay released early since they knew that 2.0 would be delayed.  Dedicated servers that aren't related to Crossplay have been around for years.  Only Crossplay dedicated servers are not available yet, and that's what is still scheduled as part of 2.0.

No problem.  They haven't said anything about that changing, so it's a good bet it'll be out with 2.0.

There is a lot of conflicting info out there, and the source won't clarify things, makes it hard to even guess.

I was told those kind of servers are hard to stand up...I don't know if that is true...especially when TFP said they could do crossplay and it was all MS and Sony holding things up.
