Some mods have instructions to put in mods folder in one location... some instructions it's the other. Does it matter... why is this the case?

The official recommendation is for them to be placed in appdata.  Some mods have continued to use the original game location even after that recommendation was made a couple years of so ago.  Currently, both locations work.  However, there may come a time when the game stops reading the game folder location, so it is just better to use the appdata location.

As for why.... Microsoft/GamePass doesn't allow you to use mods from a game folder.  To keep things the same across Windows platforms, they recommend appdata for everyone.  It makes it easier to explain how to install things and to troubleshoot if everyone uses the same location.

Now, if you use the -UserDataFolder option when loading the game, you can put your folders anywhere you want, including the game folder, even if the game stops reading that location.  I have mine on a separate drive because my C drive is tiny.

How does it work for us who have multiple copies of the game installed.

If I put mods in appdata wont they load in any game I start?

Right now I have 3 different folders on C drive with different mods in each one. If I put mods in appdata won't the same mods load in each game.

And if I use the UserDataFolder in the serverconfig.xml file in each game to set the folder for the mods will that use the folder I set it to?

You need to set the UserDataFolder for each game to a different location.  It might even be useful to have them in the same main location but in subfolders...

Example:

%appdata%\7DaysToDie\A20

%appdata%\7DaysToDie\A21

%appdata%\7DaysToDie\V1

Then you can easily access all of them from a single main location.  Each of those folders would have your Mods, Saves, LocalPrefabs, etc. folders in them.  Just one way to do it, of course.

As far as setting the folders, you can do it in each game's serverconfig.xml file, or you can have a shortcut for each version that has the -UserDataFolder parameter set up there.  Either option would work.  Just be sure you have them all set and don't miss any so you don't mess up your games.

On top of what riamus mentioned.

You can also in the one appdata have multiple Mods folders.

Ie:

Mods

Mods - A20

Mods - A21

Mods - V1

The Mod folder is current now you can simply add to the mods folder this  - teragon and remove the - A20 if you want back to A20.

So then your appdata look like this -

Mods

Mods - A21

Mods - teragon

Mods - v1
