Loving this game, but now my only computer (company laptop), someone just decided Steam is a "huge and major security risk" so now it's flagged.

Did I just lose my ability to play?  Is there any scenario where I can keep playing without Steam?

Private stuff has not to be used on company hardware. NEVER. Whatever. What happens if you get infected by malware that leaks company stuff, caused by private use? You're absolutely @%$#ed.

I guess your work contract didn't include any private use of company hardware?

7d2d ist not playable without steam. So if any admin of your company decided to block steam, yes, no more 7d2d.

I am unclear how your company "screwed" you over.

So many questions:

Do you really think it's ok to use their computer however you wish to?

What other programs got blocked. Are we hearing the whole picture here?

Porn sites?

Other games

Streaming on illegal sites like Project Free TV?\

This list could go on for quite awhile

If you are down to possibly piss off your company and continue playing, its probable if you can manage to install VMware to run a virtual machine with admin privliges and bypass their security by creating your own computer within a computer.... But, I can 100% promise thatll piss off an IT guy somewhere.... And your company laptop might not be able to handle running 2 windows OS at once and youll need to have a ISO file for windows OS. :p

lmao, just put in a windows recovery USB and tell the PC bios to boot from USB first. Double check your IT guy security. xD
Tho, if this works, id strongly suggest reporting it to your IT dept. LOL.

I tried launching the game while Steam wasn't open, and I got this result.

I'm playing on a Mac, same as the OP, so it's safe to say they should expect the same result.

As a practical matter, the only security risk I've ever had from Steam, using it every year for the last fourteen years, is when other people's accounts are hacked and their accounts send me private messages with malicious links.  Your mileage may vary, and you probably can't do much about what your company does with the laptops they own... but I consider Steam a low risk.

but I consider Steam a low risk.
If companies block steam or netflix or amazon (no matter if they block an app or block the internet access to them) it's often not a question of risk, but they want to avoid distractions of their employes and/or that they "abuse" company hardware.

I don't know where OP comes from, but here in germany you aren't allowed to use company hardware for any private purposes, until your work contract explicitely allowes private use of that. If you do it anyway, that's a reason to become fired.

I don't disagree, but "huge and major security risk" is what the OP cited as the reason.  I took that at face value and was responding to that concern.

Steam is a major security risk because it allows you to download unapproved software to your work computer.  That's a huge risk from an IT perspective.  Anything that can create a conflict with your work software is a problem for IT and for your company.

As for playing without Steam, you can as long as you play local solo games offline.  But you company may not exactly like you doing that, either.

The one thing I find curious about that Play Offline button being grayed out....it we are not meant to be able to play the game offline...why is there a play offline button in the first place?

It is also grayed out for me but iirc, I am sure there was one time steam was off and I could hit that button to play single player game. I think it was quite a while ago that happened though.

It might be tied to the anti-cheat stuff?  Run the launcher and turn off the anti-cheat option to see if it works.

There's also an option to disable "GameSparks" but I don't know what that is.

EDIT: Tried both and not working on my Linux box.  It used to, though, so I'm not sure what is going on.

My internet was out for a couple hours the other night. I was still able to click the button to play offline.

I did have to restart steam for the button to turn on though.

Your company issues laptops capable of handling 7D2D??
