PC Zed Pathing Question - Fence/Chokepoints

Hi Guys,

I put a perimeter fence around my base, a wood frame with wood bars on top. At the front of my base there are two gaps in the fence with spikes recessed into pits so they are level with the ground. Barbed wire on the inner side of the pit for when they get through.

Have had two wandering hordes coming from the back of my base at night and punch holes straight through the fence rather than pathing around to the front. Is there something wrong or does the pathing change based on my level?

 
Zombies weigh barbed wire in their pathfinding. That is... they know to avoid it.

I find this mechanic to be BS.

I built a zombie murder corridor. And they pathed it just fine for early versions of the construction.

Then I laced it with barbed wire to slow them down. They decided suddenly, instead, to path into the building through another route and try to punch through 2 meters of brick and concrete rather than walk through barbed wire.

So I walked through my murder corridor tearing down the barbed wire and suddenly, again, they decided concrete was too hard. Better try the murder corridor now that we've psychically detected that it has been cleared.

[edit]Turns out there must have been a persistent continuity problem in my murder corridor or an undiscovered hole in the wall, because with further testing, I proved that zombies DO in fact path through barbed wire so long as there is no unobstructed alternative.[/edit]

make the doorway or path 3 blocks high, with barbed wire at the bottom. they still use the path since its the easiest path to take, not knowing its bogged down with barbs.

 
Yep that would irritate me too! I'll try removing the barbed wire.

Zombies walk up the pyramid ramp, funnel down the catwalk. Two doors with bars stop them at the end. A partner can stand on one of the crenellations and repair the doors. The interior doors are airlocks that you can open and close to juggle the zombies' pathing and hold them off long enough to escape up an elevator if they overrun.

@Colin248 can you elaborate on your suggestion? I don't understand what would be different than I what I attempted.

I've made a much simple murder corridor but laced it with barb wire fences over wooden spikes. Glad I saw your barbed wire comments before the next hoard!

It's the details that really make a build interesting.

At least for me anyway.

This can't be true, because my murder corridor has no ceiling... so it has clearance up to the game's sky ceiling, and the zombies refused to path through the barbed wire.

 
i was using a small cage for hordes made out of flagstone, they would hit one side of the cage and all path there but when i moved to the other side of cage they would come round and start hitting fresh blocks, seems there is some sort of perimeter around you so if the damaged blocks are outside of it they will re do their pathing, i know its poo but the smaller the better has worked for me best so far and the thing that killed me is i failed getting up my escape ladder once they finally broke through because of the way i placed my hatch, even though i practised it before the horde came lol

 
Hrmm, I just tested this in a controlled setting, and they ARE pathing through barbed wire.

I went back and set up a simple pathing test on a local game I used to test, and the zombies favored barbed wire over a solid wall.

I went back to my server and put barbed wire back down on my corridor. At first, they pathed over it. Then I shut some of the doors and they changed their mind. I watched the zombies and they pathed to a gap in a wall that was new. So I patched that hole and tried again.

They pathed over 20 blocks of barbed wire to get at me.

I, therefore, believe that when I witnessed the avoidance before there was either a continuity break in my trap somewhere or there was an accessible gap in a wall that I had overlooked.

Nod to lazyknob, he was correct in challenging my assertion.

[edit]Good news is my murder corridor works as I originally intended it to, now. Huzzah![/edit]

Here's where I see people having problems with pathing and traps.

Ask them if they bothered to dig down before they placed the traps.

I have a funnel style base and all my traps are 3 blocks down.

Spikes with barbed wire on top of them.

No problems.

Zeds go right through the traps.
