...a random perk-picker enabled!? You could turn it on or off, but it might add some pizzazz to the game if your skillset was chosen by the gremlins under the hood.

There'd be  a percentage chance that instead of spending a point on a 1-point perk, those gremlins might instead bank the point toward purchasing higher end perks.

Hmm, completely random? Probably not; it would end up wasting so many points that you might as well not spend any at all. You'll have an INT of 5 and nothing selected there, one point in all of the things, two max, and nothing actually powerful.

Selectively random, as in 50% of taking points from Tree1, 30% from Tree2, 20% for all others, with some weight for preferring weapon skills sanely etc? Ehh, probably not, it would "force" the selection of my weapon, but I already know I can play with any of them.

Doesn't sound like an impossible idea, but it would suit a faster-paced game better (or a fast-paced mod overhaul); getting to a point where you start feeling the horribleness of your build takes ages... :)

 
So would it randomly select any of the perks?  Might be strange and a bit frustrating.....If your first roll was Grease Monkey Perk Level 5, then you will have to spend the perks on raising Int to 10 and then unlocking all 5 perk levels in Grease Monkey.  So first 21 level up perks would have to go towards this Perk that it randomized for you.

Though I may have what you are looking for completely wrong

 
Sounded like @Morloc was suggesting that every time you earn a point, the system randomly chooses an available attribute or perk to spend it on, or it chooses to bank it for later (and then possibly spending 2 pts at once next time you earn a point).

 
Could make it so that you cannot buy attributes but instead you get those buffed randomly.

You'd still get to decide which perks you want in an attribute.

Slow down XP a bit to account for the free points.

LOL....I ~do~ like the idea of just springing the whole thing with a swig of Elixir. Let's see if I can survive as THIS guy.....<glug, glug, glug...>, but the slow painful ordeal of having to adjust to the skills you gain through Chaotic Osmosis (TM) might be more funner.

And to clarify from theFlu's post....yes there'd be some logical algorithm for picking perks to prevent overly crazy point banking. Still having a small chance for it to happen would be okay though.

I would suggest this: Perks that already randomly got points have a higher chance to be re-selected. Say 5 times more often for every point in them already. Would make sure you still concentrate your points on specific perks.

If you also don't want to spread perk points into all attributes a similar scheme could make perks more likely to be selected in attributes where already points were sunk in.

And if a perk is selected but at the momentary maximum because of a too low attribute the next points go into the corresponding attribute until that perk gets its point.

That's just simulating how a player would currently spend his or her points (i.e. logically). My suggestion is that it's very much random. It might not be smart to have no focus at all on your spending of points, but it might be fun on a playthrough trying to adapt to or overcome the perks that are forced on you. Though I tend to get every perk on my playthroughs, it'd be a much different game if I didn't follow my comfortable, formulaic progression of picks.

That depends highly on the weights, even at 5x as meganoth suggests, it's still only something like 5:50 to get your second point aimed at the perk your first point was spent on. When there's two different perks allocated, we're at 5:55 to land on either. So it's pretty random still. And nothing is saying that the first two were actually useful... :)

Some random thoughts;

- have the player choose every 3rd point, might make it less annoying. Or have it random two perks of which you pick one.

- start with a random preset 20 points (and maybe one of those DMT Potions to allow for a single random reroll at start)

- the above, but pre-built instead or entirely random (start with a random selection specialising 2 points to a gun or a melee)

- increase the gamestage at start (skip the stone age since everything is identical there, and get some ferals to compete with fast)

 
I've thought about doing a play through without spending any points to see how far I get before it gets too hard.  I could see adding books for each level of each stat as well as each level of each skill.  Throw all of that at the RNG to get a not-quite-accurate version of your random leveler.

 
I feel like the Twitch integration is kinda sorta approaching this, with temporary effects to unpredictably help or hinder the player, like increasing their speed, or making only melee weapons work.  And your Twitch watchers make great gremlins.  :evil:

 
I think for a 30min day MP PVP with 3x XP and a small map 2x2 random gen map, that would be a fun quick game to play vs friends. VERY replayable. However a long game like I typically enjoy, 120min days SP 1x XP, that would be counter to me living out my survivor fantasy, and instead be more of a rogue like style game.

I was going to try to make a joke about your mother and a goat but then got my brain stuck on you with cloven hoof toenails and a billy goat beard and my brain shut off.  No surprise there but when it started up again I was only conscious long enough to pass out again.  Then I lost my train of thought and jumped the rails.  I'm pretty sure my insurance will cover the damage I caused to my coffee table as I crashed onto it, maybe.  But the insurance guy is the son of a motherless goat so he may not.  What was I talking about again?
