Why sooooo slow???

I bought a nice gaming pc early last year and it played 7D2D like a hot knife going thru butter. I was getting an avg of 100fps and it was dropping to 80-90 in big towns. A huge difference from my gaming laptop which couldn't handle 60fps on medium settings. My current desktop setup: Ryzen 5 5500 3.6ghz+, 32gb ram, MSI GeForce 3060 RTX 8gb card, 1 TB SSD. Now my issue is I haven't played 7D2D in 2 months or so. I was waiting for the new alpha to drop beginning 1st QTR before I created a new world. I couldn't wait and jumped in recently anyway. The game runs like the zombies are in slow motion and when i jump I feel like I'm moon jumping (more airtime than usual). Also, when walking forward I sometimes jump ahead a few steps as if I lost a few frames. I have done some homework also and I turned Dynamic Mesh off, turned shadows down to medium, motion blur off, and a few other minor tweaks but that did NOTHING. It's running at @ 80-88 fps in a small town. I'm confused as to how last time I played it, it ran like a champ and now it's basically unplayable. I did uninstall/ re-install, checked all Steam settings and nothing! FYI: I was running on High settings before this transpired. I made sure I wasn't crouching, I checked CPU/GPU temps. Is this game just broke AF or what? Also I have ZERO issues running other games: Destiny 2, Grounded (on Epic settings), Horizon Zero Dawn, Wonderlands, Borderlands 3, Stray. Just looking for some help or info on this issue. Also, running on the latest stable version 21.2 B37

I had the same issue a month or so back (especially the stuttering when moving forwards), I turned off V-Sync and it improved drastically - not sure if it'll help you but thought it worth mentioning.

It has to be some settings doing that right? I mean my comp is from 2016 with way lower specs and I, luckily can play the game fine (knock on wood).

I do have some stuff turned down and even some off. Like the Dynamic Mesh mentioned. I also turn off everything in the list from Bloom down.

I hate to see players have trouble with this game as I would freak if I couldn't play it for any reason.

80+ FPS would be playable.  My monitor itself can only do 60 FPS but that doesn't mean things are unplayable.  You can be at 30 FPS and the game is playable as, even at that, you're still not dealing with stutters or graphical tearing or anything like that.  If you are having slow movements and such, that's not going to relate at all to your FPS if you're getting over 80 FPS still.  It is also unlikely to be a graphics setting at those framerates.

In any case, you could start by lowering everything and see how that works.  If you get the FPS that you are looking for, then you know it's a setting that you can control.  Start adjusting each setting until you find the one that is causing you trouble and just keep that one setting low/off.  And like mentioned, disable VSYNC.  I've seen that cause more problems in games than just about anything else.

Also, be sure you're talking about actual performance issues on your own computer and not network performance issues.  If it's caused by the network, it is unlikely to relate to your settings and would explain the difference from a couple months ago.  If that's the problem, you should look at a different server to play on or run a TRACERT from you to the server to see if there are any problems along the route.  You can easily see if it's a network problem versus computer problem by playing the game in single player (hosting it yourself).

Beyond that, make sure you have Windows set to manage your pagefile rather than setting it up with static values and make sure the game is installed on your SSD.  You should also see if you are using any mods and try the game without any mods installed as it could be a mod problem.

Last, you should always post your log so people can see if there are any errors or other problems that would identify the problem.  Otherwise, there's really nothing anyone can do but guess, and that's unlikely to give you useful help.

Oh, and you can't compare the performance of this game to other games.  Other games are GPU-bound, while this game is CPU-bound.  So other games can run great as long as you have an okay computer with a great GPU.  This game needs a great CPU to run great instead.  Of course, your CPU is fine.  But the comparison to other games doesn't work because of this.

EDIT: Also, check your GPU driver/software, which may have been updated in the past couple months.  Maybe the driver has problems and installing an older driver will resolve your problems.  That's not uncommon.  You can also make sure your driver/software isn't using special features to "improve" your game as those can sometimes cause problems.

There have been some driver issues lately that should have been resolved in recent ones. Use DDU to uninstall then install a fresh download of the latest driver.
