PC Why is my roof colapseing with supports?

Because the structural integrity system is very arcane and makes little intuitive sense.

I mostly just place tons of support pillars close together, especially when I plan on adding floors on top of the first one. Still have stuff falling off the walls because I replaced a block on the other side of my base, but it's manageable and I don't have to break out a spreadsheet and calculator every time I want to build something.

You're on the second floor there, so we can't see the whole structure - impossible to say for real.

Most likely, the floor under your supports isn't supported from the ground up. You'll need to have vertically solid "pillars" (whichever block type you use) to have the pillars work as you want.

Functional vertical support: (Both Y's are well supported)

Code:
xxxY
x...
xxxY
x...
A little disfunctional: (The Z is not as strongly supported, as the wall on top of the lower floor isn't being supported from below)

Code:
xxxZ
.x..
xxxY
x...
And once you get into more complicated structures, the SI starts dropping blocks where you wouldn't expect.

Any mods in play... or placing stuff from creative menu that you cannot build?

[edit] Most likely reason is what the guy above me wrote.
