So ive been playing for a short while (although comparatively long while if you count by hours)
in 16.4, i had some gripes, but it was still a good game and i spent much of my time on it.
now with a17 experimental, some gripes are still there, new ones have been introduced, and others have been rectified... i decided to make a thread about what issues i take with the direction of the game, just to put my opinion out there.
Symmetry: doors are one block wide, batteries, generators, walls, most everything is one block... so, my house, base, bunker, whatever it may be, is given an odd number by odd number footprint. currently 27x27. that way there is an exact center to put my land claim, there is 2 center lines of which one i can put my hatch and ladders, etcetera, all is good with the world, until.... my moat/ditch/trench/whatever. drawbridge is four wide? i cant make that symmetrical. maybe i'll just put two, with a space between them. and now when they are up, i have no sightlines on one side.
(for sake of clarity, let me explain my current setup: outer edge is 3 wide of barbed wire, followed by trench/pit 5 wide with spikes, followed by 11x11 platform in the middle to shoot from on horde nights. on the outer 3-wide rim is hatch and ladder to my bunker/home) if i go symmetrical and use two drawbridges, i lose 8 blocks of my 11 blocks sightline on that side. ok, fine, i dont use drawbridge and just drop wood frames, and pick them up after i get in the center on horde nights.
horde nights are dark, and it would be nice to be able to see what is running at me. the mining helmet only does so much. lets put up some spotlights, and so we dont waste any fuel, wire them up to solar banks. what, solar banks are 4 wide? okay then, cant put it in the middle. i'll just use two with a space in the middle. it'll work better that way anyways, because i can put my battery bank there.... what? i cant hook up two solar banks to anything? ..... why not? this seems like a glaring issue i would have thought a17 would have fixed, what with all the code changes and engine upgrades. oh well, i'll just have a solar bank sitting useless.
Next up, variance: part one is a17-specific, and part two is more akin to the "options" category.
The new quality system. not only is there no longer a reason to loot for improvements, but i cant discern a difference in the quality levels either.
Previously, when i found a good gun (500+) i had a reason to keep looting. finding more guns so i could combine and upgrade mine to that perfect 600, and then i CONTINUED to loot, to find more of that guns parts so i could combine to repair, so i didnt lose quality. with a17, just craft a quality 6 gun (which i cant discern difference from quality 1, by the way), and repair it forever, never losing quality. no reason to loot any longer, no variance in the quality of items, im not sure what else to say about this, other than i hope with all my heart this is something than can be fixed with mods, if not by the devs themselves.
And now, options: i wonder what world exists where the only bludgeons are a thick stick, a thinner stick with iron reinforcements, a claw hammer, and a sledgehammer. where is my table leg? my staff? my baseball bat? i am so good at forging i can make a jeep chassis by hand on a workbench, yet i cant make a mace?. as it stands, i have no interest in blunt weapons, due to the lack of options. for melee, i use bladed weapons, but even then im unhappy with the options. where are the swords, the non-kukri-style machete, the non-bowie hunting knife, the pocket knives, the axes?.... where are the stabby blades as opposed to slashy ones, like spears and rapiers?
Ranged weapons: i love bows, but where are the reflex, the recurve, the longbow, and the mods for stabilizers, sights, release mechanisms, etcetera? the guns, even down to just pistols, in what world is beretta the only manufacturer. where is the walther, the sig, the glock, the colt, the desert eagle? where is the .45 acp, the .40 s&w, the .357, the .50 AE, the .22 LR? where is the hollowpoint, the AP, the tracer, the overpressure? you get the point lol.
Granted, i absolutely, undeniably love what they did with the mod system, and it opened up so many options, even if some are limited (i'd like to be able to put better scope on the pistol/smg, i'd like to see an open-eye low mag scope, and some more bow mods, among others), and i love the new vehicles, they have opened many doors with that, even if i wish it wasnt so tiered and i'd like to see even more vehicle options.
These are my three biggest gripes with this game. i have a few others, but they are tolerable. i might make another thread about it at a point in the future, but for now i just had to get these opinions out there.
