PC Why can you eat glass?

So far I am enjoying A17 a lot. I was waiting out a night I was looking at recipes when I clicked on glass. I normally use the quick keys like ‘a’ to get to recipes but instead I ate it. Died immediately, was very annoyed and don’t know why that feature is in there.

Other than that A17 is the bomb!

Yeah it's been a feature for a long while. More of a flavor thing, and I suppose if you get yourself trapped in a situation you cant get out of its an option. That sucks though lol.

Game used to have a suicide button option next to the quit button. TFP removed it and unsurprisingly the forums erupted. Probably was the first #gate regarding “development by subtraction”...lol

Anyway after all the hand wringing and ranting and predictions of the game’s demise (nothing ever changes) Madmole announced that they created an ingame version of the suicide button AKA eating glass to appease the angry crowd (nothing ever changes).

Back then dying was an even bigger exploit because there were set spawn points around the map and you could choose which one you would respawn at after dying....

Yep. There was a meltdown when those were removed too. Peeps love their fast travel abilities.

Lmfao. Interesting. I am glad the fast traveling is out for sure. I remember (I think) something about zombies spawning in unlit areas at night, could be mistaken though. Interesting to see all the changes. I used the glass-suicide once on a MP server a good while back when A16 was new. Had a torch-fight in a snow with a new spawn after I freshly spawned, and we both gave up and parted ways. I came across a heavily raided huuuuge base with an even bigger pit (I wanna say it was 200x200 at least). I found a tunnel and being gearless figured why not. Saw a gap which I could have jumped to get to another ledge leading to an entry point. I missed and slid gracefully all the way to the bottom. Land claim zone, solid rock all around me. Scrapped my glass of water and ate the glass lol. Fun times.

Zombies spawning in dark areas was a HUGE misconception during the early days as we had a lot of players migrating over from Minecraft. There would be posts complaining that zombies were spawning inside player bases and all the ex-Minecraftians testifying inaccurately that all you had to do was place lots of torches everywhere to inhibit the spawns. Someone would explain that the code did not support this and everyone would say, "Oh....huh....I thought it worked like Minecraft" and then a few days later the cycle would happen again. I think when the terrain became smooth and the game no longer looked like a Minecraft mod that misconception finally died.

Torch light did force zombies to walk however. On several servers helpful people would place torches in a line down the middle of the main roads so that you could travel safely at night.

That actually sounds pretty awesome.

Dying Light has something similar, where you can shine an ultraviolet flashlight on volatiles (nasty, super powerful zombies that come out only at night) to stun them so you can continue running and turn around a corner/climb a ledge to break line of sight.

I hope something like that gets implemented here further down the line because it makes for really fun gameplay.

I really wish I had been able to play back then, I remember when the game first came off of kickstarter and I would watch people playing it because all I had was a garbage laptop but I ended up buying it anyhow a couple alphas later and putting 70 or 80 hours into even with max 30-40 frames at the lowest settings. So glad I've got a comp that can really run this game now because it's progressed so far since then.

Any plans to put that back in? so lights force non-ferals to walk at night? I mean you could argue it makes no sense, but neither do zombies suddendly being able to be olympic level sprinters just because the sun went down.

Ahh, good times. I also remember the forge wasn't a thing back then. No #ForgeGate.

Gamestage (enemy difficulty) = (player level + days alive) x difficulty setting multiplier

If you want to drop the difficulty of your run temporarily (eg the day before horde night) kill yourself in a controlled manner in the safety of your base and let the debuff wear off. Eat glass!

Too funny! Reminds me of the practical joke or gag you leave for someone but they fail to notice. Then everyone forgets about it until some unwitting soul comes by one day and says, "Huh. What's this?".

Yea, that reaction was very surprising since virtually none, according to what people write in these forums, used death as a status reset or free teleport, *cough cough*.

Yet another example of why the shortcut keys being WASD makes zero sense.
