PC Where to find sulphate seams?

I must be doing something wrong, I've read the forums and people talk about finding gravel on the surface? is this the little patches of round ground near boulders? When I hit them with my pickaxe, I always get sand, rock and iron ore, nothing else. Also it's only ever 1 block deep.

I've tried digging down to bedrock. I just found earth, then a deep layer of stone, which only gave stone and iron ore, no sulphate at all.

Do I go down to the stone layer, but stop at that point and go sideways? Are the veins in the stone, or the earth?

Are they clearly visible? I didnt notice any significantly different layers on my dig down and backup again.

Hope someone can help, I'm at lvl 120 ish, and my main issue now is finding sulphate to make ammo, the surface boulders don't give nearly enough. I've got 8000 brass lying around but can't make the gunpowder to use it. I buy every scrap of ammo from the traders, but it's never enough.

You mean Nitrate powder? If you go in caves and see the white stalactites hanging down from the ceiling you can hit those for nitrates. Underground they look like very bright white chunks when you're mining, they have a round looking pattern on the texture.

I got like 10,000 nitrate from my forest biome open pit mine. Solid nitrate blocks are white and chunky, being distinct from stalagmites.

Forest biome? I've read elsewhere that snow or wasteland biomes are best, but I've found no seams at all, so I'll try both. Thanks.

What about depth, are seams in the soil or that thick layer of rock before bedrock?

Looks like this (the white chunks to the top right, bottom right and bottom left of the cursor)

(Edit: the game decided to delete my profile after I wanted to make my character a bit beefier looking... do not do this. I had to cheat back my level and equipment, hence the uncompleted starter quest. Also I just killed myself with dynamite... twice).

I sure would be nice if ores in the ground had special 3d models that really stick out visually. It's weird mining stretchy pants paint awkwardly applied to flat surfaces.

The worst to mine is coal at nighttime.

ok, i've managed now to find an iron seam, and a coal and lead seam.

The iron seam is much browner and reasonably easy to see

the lead seam was faintly blue/silvery, and reasonably easy to see.

The coal seam was almost impossible to see, I had to just keep whacking rocks in the general area, and watching what was received.

Still no luck at all for a nitrate seam. i've tried snow in 3 sites (as in game says try snow) and burnt forest in 2 sites.

Yes nitrate. Caves are too rare. I do them when I find them.

White chunks in soil? Or rock? Any particular biome best?
i think wasteland has the best chance for nitrate, but you can find it any biome. its really luck of the draw. but look for boulders on the surface, then dig up some of the gravel near them (it pokes thru in little patches). if you get nitrate and iron when you break the gravel blocks you are close, just dig in the area and you should find some ore. lots of time you will find little patches mixed in with iron ore, so dont give up if you reach iron first.

another viable option to mining is to ride around and just break the small boulders on the surface instead of going for underground ores. the small boulders give you a little of everything; stone, iron, lead, coal and nitrate. its a reliable easy to find source if you have trouble finding sizable veins underground
