What's with all the ammo in loot?

Every playthrough I always run into the same issue... You're doing quests, building up in power and resources, and you start getting to the tier 4, tier 5, tier 6 quests... Then suddenly, you're inundated with ammo.

I'm somewhat of a loot goblin, I guess. I see loot, I take it, unless I can convince myself to just drop it on the ground or leave it where I found it. So a lot of loot ends up at my base, sitting in storage chests. So the longer I play, the more storage chests I need, which just keep getting filled with, among other things, stacks upon stacks of ammo.

So you think to yourself, "okay, I have ammo, I'll use up the ammo"... So you go to a quest, guns blazing, wasting as much ammo as you can, and you mow down every enemy, get to the loot room, and... You loot three times as much ammo as you spent clearing the building...

Okay, maybe Blood Moon will solve this...? Nope, the enemies you kill end up dropping more ammo than you can spend killing them.

Surely I can't be the only one who experiences this, every single playthrough, right? Ammo is way too common in mid-late game.

Endgame has me opening an infested cache, scrapping the 4 largest ammo stacks and leaving the rest of the ammo behind. I'm looking forwards to the big options update so i can gut infested cache's to the bone.

It has the side effect of making bases nothing more than dragon hoards to store your loot, why craft when you can bring home a full inv 3 times a day.

I'm selling all ammo I don't need for my hordenight M60. I got to fly to all traders every refresh day and still every hordenight brings me more than I can sell. Not to mention what I find in loot. The only ammo I ever crafted besides arrows was for the Dirty Larry challenge since I sold all 🫠
So yes, You're not the only one.

There will be an option to increase or decrease ammo in loot coming in the next big update. In fact they have separated out several categories of loot that you will be able to individually modify the percent chance of showing up in loot. So people who want no ammo in loot can try that and people who want just less than we have now can have that and it won't affect anything else about loot.

People who want it left alone or even increased beyond the current balance will be able to have that too.

And the fun pimps heardeth thee and the bullets shall not be so plentiful for you next time in 3.0!.... God that sounds stupid but a creative way of saying things will be better for ya alongside many new options to tinker with.

Hopefully! It's pretty rough using 60 bullets to clear a POI, and getting 600 in the end loot. It's been impossible to use up the ammo you get for years now.

I just hope I can also change it in Infested loot

Is there too much ammunition in loot... or is the droprate intended for people who can't aim and originally calculated for the venerable spray-and-prayer?

Lategame I start drowning in ammunition, but then I peripherally see how my most-common co-oper treats ammo and loot-filtering, and let's just say that some difficulty factors transcend any slider that could be programmed.

I cannot think of a time when I ran full guns blazing and came out with more ammunition than I went in with so I think the hyperbolic nature of the post is misleading. I end up with ammo typically because I use a lot of melee and reserve guns for end game or do or die situations. By the end of the game, since I have been using melee, I have a decent stockpile of ammo. With how hordes are it's incongruent with how many zombies generally spawn in the overworld. I.E. You need ammo for horde nights, especially earlier on, but do not generally need a lot of ammo while questing or running around. It would be difficult to balance between the two situations.

For sure, I'd love to hear about people having a different experience than me.

In an earlier version, may have been 1.4, I remember purposefully setting up a base with the intention of crafting lots of ammo. I had forges, workbenches, chemistry stations. It was my goal since the beginning of that playthrough to just full-commit to crafting ammo. I invested in Strength for mining the nitrate, coal, lead, and brass was going to be my natural bottleneck, so I collected as much brass as I could...

Except I was questing and looting for magazines and brass along the way...

By the time my first batches of bulk-crafted ammo (80% of the cost for 100 rounds) had finished, I already had stacks and stacks of ammo from questing, looting, and zombie loot drops. I already had looted guns, and was already shooting all zombies, not bothering with melee...

And so, that playthrough concept was a failure. I never actually used any of my crafted ammo, because I was already flooded with looted ammo, and ammo from quest rewards.

In 2.5, I didn't even bother trying to craft ammo. I haven't bothered since that fateful playthrough back then. One of my longest playthroughs in 2.5 I decided to be a sneak archer. But 38 hours in, I got bored of the playstyle, and drank a fergettin' elixir. Since I was full-committed to archery, I had been dropping or selling all of the guns, gun mods, and ammo the whole playthrough long. I had no stockpile. So I had to use my unperked bow and crossbow until I got ammo, then immediately switched to guns, and... Once I started not discarding ammo, I just didn't run out. I had 4 storage chests dedicated to ammo.

So, if your experience with the game is different, I'd love to hear about it.

For reference, when I said 60 for 600, I was thinking about tier 4 POIs, or tier 5 infestation (because tier 4 POIs are a lot smaller than tier 5 POIs). Once you start doing tier 5 POIs, you probably are safer bringing in 600 ammo, but even in those cases I come out with more than I came in with.

I've had plenty of similar experiences, even in those T5 POIs, even some T6 quests. Like rolling up to a Minotaur Theatre having forgotten my ammo; just with two loaded guns. Do I go back to grab more? Naaah, it'll be fine. You'll earn what you spend from the zed bags ... :)
