What Was The Point of Making Cooking More Annoying?

I was making more honey brisket last night (in order to clear inventory space) and a good reason for this change occurred to me. Grilling meat is a very simple recipe. Just grab a stack of meat out of storage and throw it on the grill. Which means it is easy to cook that recipe without holding the meat in your inventory long enough to build up a long range smell.

Recipes that use that meat, now in the form of grilled meat, are typically more complex. Depending upon how you organize storage it may take you a minute to grab all the ingredients you need, and if you don't plan ahead and grab the meat last, having raw meat as an ingredient could result in a decently strong smell. Without this change it could feel restrictive, like now you *must* keep your campfire indoors.

Not sure this is really about those few seconds of exposure. But I have a rather similar argument: This allows an alternative method besides paper to safely transport meat.
 
Author, is this your first time playing? Dishes that required other dishes have been around for a long time, at least since version A17, but they likely existed even earlier.

Even looking at the image for that food makes me nauseous, so I've never made it. Yes, I know there are things that require cornbread. I've even played mods that added flour and required making bread and what not.

I just don't understand the point of the change. It's seems kinda pointless.
 
Why don't you ask the same question (e.g.) for vehicles?
Why do we have to craft the different parts and then craft the final recipe, instead of putting all the parts together in a bigger one?

Weather right or wrong, nice or awful to you, the logic is the same.
The vehicle recipes have been unchanged for years now. The grilled meat requirement is a recent change to something that hasn't changed for years to the benefit of no one. I suppose it's to encourage going for more than 1 point in Master Chef, but that only borders on a need if you're feeding a whole group of folks.

For the cooking speed? Doesn't change much there, as it now allows pre-cooking all your meats into Grilled; avoiding having "wrong type" of meat if you want to make a higher tier recipe, while just auto-cooking every bit of meat as it rolls in.

So your take is that a change is good (or not good) based on how long that feature has been in the game before being changed? :unsure:
Also, why does something in the game have to "benefit" someone?

Time management and ingredient management is (sort of) a minigame that some like, some don't, but it's certainly something that has an impact on the game. When I cook more "complicated" foods, I need to take into account the time and effort vs. the benefit of the recipe itself. That's a game mechanic that makes sense and covers those players who like cooking.

I don't particularly like farming, for example, but I don't ask TFP to make crops easier than they are just because it's not my favorite part of the game. 🤷‍♂️
 
This thread is an example of the impossibility to please everyone. Streamlining the recipe to not require intermediate components would draw criticism from people and here we see that adding intermediate steps draws criticism from you guys.

There are popular mods that add quite a few intermediate crafting steps so TFP doing this is sure to please some portion of the community.

TFPs usual MO is to streamline crafting and eliminate such steps. The dev team calls such things “sharp sticks” going back to a time when we had to craft sharp sticks before making arrows and then they streamlined it to just “wood”.

I'd really like the crafting mechanics to be like in Factorio, where the game automatically queues up intermediate components for production. Here's an example from Factorio: I need to make a green circuit that requires copper wire and iron. I have iron and copper in my inventory. I set the circuit to be crafted, and the game automatically queues up the required amount of wire first, and then creates the circuit from that and the iron. A similar scheme exists in Conan Exiles.

This is true only now that the grilled meat requirement was added. I am pretty sure I've never seen anyone request that you grill the mean before cooking your food. So it wouldn't have drawn any criticism prior to adding it. Of course, now that it is added, you are right that removing it would probably draw criticism from some people. Personally, I don't care about it because I just cook meat when I leave and it's ready when I return, so it has no actual impact other than cost of wood to cook it with, which doesn't matter to me. But I also don't see a good reason for the change.
