What self-imposed challenges do you apply to playthroughs?

Personally, the only restriction I impose on my gameplay is to be "realistic", so for example when building I never use floating blocks and I also don't use candies or drinks with "magical powers".

But that's pretty much the extent of it for me. 🤷‍♂️

I'm interested to read what weird restrictions other players put on themselves when they play.

For example, half of the time I choose not to use guns or explosives, to slow down my progression.
My eyes are getting worse and worse, so the only time I even try to use a bow/crossbow, is on enemies that are standing mostly still. I don't use guns or power tools, and the only traps I allow myself are spike traps.

I considder ammo a rare commodity after the apocalypse, so I keep firearms for hordenight only.
(Wich actualy proved me wrong, the lootbags from hordenight are drowning me in ammo 🫠 )

I don't use candy. I don't nerd pole for combat purposes.

Other than that, I tend to mod the game's behavior in areas such as: water, lockpicking success chance, farming, recipes, loot bag duration, etc.

I don't impose restrictions on myself, but there are things I just don't do because I don't like them or don't feel like doing them. It has nothing to do with making the game more difficult or anything like that. For example, I rarely use a gun except on horde night because I enjoy melee with spears. I don't make floating bases because I think they look dumb. I don't nerd pole for combat, though I'll do it for building. I don't use candy and buy very little from traders.

The first is not a restriction but it has restricted my progression speed.

Increased constant entities spawned outdoors, the higher tier biomes = the
higher tier entities. Except the infernal and charged i leave those for pois.
Reduced the progression zombies spawn, to make it harder to find them.

I won't place a ladder or block unless it can touch the face of a block. I
understand why they have not allowed pass through for the colliders to the
painted faces. Additional Raytracing.

Lucky looter will only read the more junk book. Perk books I read the physical mod
unlocks.

Use as few of the perk buffs and power ups and progression accelerators as possible,
only using physical mods for weapons and armor. So it's more "me vs Un-nature". I
lose a lot more often now. But more fun now. Naturally more difficult even at Nomad.
Shooting for Adventurer. It's way slower, but now I'm more dependent on other aspects
of the game I could skip before.

I guess, it's not really self imposed restrictions, but more game imposed. So each play
is different even if I follow the same path.

Do impositions provided by the game options count? Except for my very first playthroughs back in A19, I've always played dead is dead. Now that there is a game option for that, it makes it more permanent, by I still see it as a self-imposed challenge since that is not the default setting.

I also play on 16 hour daylight (I think the default is 18?) which leads to longer nights (sun will not rise until 6am). It always seemed weird to me that the sun in this game rises at 4am by default. That's really not the reality, especially in the region this game is set.

Like others, I also try to avoid the "cheesy" tactics that this game allows, such as nerd polling, or impossible floating blocks. I try to build in a realistic fashion.

I also avoid jumping out of tall buildings, even if I have all the perks that would keep me from breaking my leg.
