PC Water Containers Being Used During Cooking

When we make a drink and then drink it the glass container becomes empty and we can use it again because all we did was empty the water. But when we cook something, like an egg or ear of corn, the glass container goes away. Why?

All we are doing is emptying the water into the cooking pot to make the food. Just like we emptied it to drink the water.

I could see an option to cook the egg or corn without the cooking pot but damaging the container in the process. So give the option of using the container before you get a pot or save the container with the pot.

And speaking of why can't we empty a can of boiled water into the pot to cook? Wouldn't it be the same as emptying the glass container?

And just to ramble, why do the empty cans and cans of murky water stack but the cans of boiled water do not stack?

 
I agree that the realism of jars is off, but you're also applying concrete with hammers and nail guns. Deer and bear meat turn into bacon and eggs. Nurses dressed like porn stars while a global epidemic ravaged the planet rather than wearing hazmat suits. It's just there to make the game play more rich. There doesn't have to be deep reasoning when you can drive for two minutes and be in a desert, plain or arctic tundra depending on the direction.

The reason this happens is that there is not a way to make two output items from the cooking process. On the PC version we just mod it so that you get the jar back when consuming the food.

As for the biomes, the game is set in Arizona and this actually can happen in real life.

It can also be possible to get several resources when scrapping items. It would make sense. You break an ax, get iron and wood, and so on.

That's just it. The way the code works does not allow for multiple output items. It is not possible.

Maybe this will change in some future Unity update, but it does not exist now as a possibility.

I guess it does add a dynamic of either make safe food or drink only. Just seemed odd to me.

 
I’ll stick with the meat stew and golden rod tea as my examples.

Golden rod tea - need tea leaves and water. Pour water from jaw into pot and add leaves. Boil. Pour completed tea into the empty jar for storage. Drink tea which empties the jar. Reuse jar.

Meat stew - need meat, potatoes, corn, and water. Pour water in pot and add other ingredients. Cook. Pour stew back into the jar for storage. Eat the stew and you should have an empty jar left over.

Just like the jar is returned from the tea, I would like to see the jar returned from the stew.

Not so sure you're right on this. I mean, when we break rocks we get stones and iron (and lead, coal and nitrate for boulders), when we break trees we get wood and seeds, when we break down cars we get multiple items and the list can go on, so I'm not sure your logic of blaming it on the Unity engine holds up.

That being said, glass jars are easy to make not to mention plentiful so I don't see it as a big deal, just a confusing decision on the dev's part.

 
That's two separate systems you are talking about. One is a destruct task, the other is a crafting recipe. Recipes can only produce one output. The destruct task can have multiple outputs, and you can even set a % drop on each output item.

Hmmmm.....of course someone with a name like yours would believe that glass jars made from...."sand"...is no big deal. :02.47-tranquillity: :tickled_pink:

 
Yeah I thought it was a bit odd to cook and lose a jar. But then again digging a tunnel through sand you can craft a ton of jars.
