PC Wandering Horde question

The wandering hordes, whether they be the living dead, or a pack of wolves lead by a pair of dires, have me curious. Is there a set time they come? Or is it completely random? Will one always spawn in a player's vicinity, or is their location random as well? And.. will we ever see wandering groups of other creatures as well? Perhaps a pack of bears, or a herd of deer?

Mostly just based on gut feelings:

- the time is random, probably with a minimum time between two (otherwise it'd be relatively common to see them back to back)

- they're spawned on a player, wouldn't make sense to spawn them into the empty world. Around a player, in a loaded chunk, moving towards-but-not-exactly-at the player.

- floods of bunnies?!? Noo, why must you be summoning such horrors into my mind?

Wandering Hordes / Gamestage

I don't think as a whole it has really been, focused on or taken seriously  since

before the end of 2018.

Respawn about every 100 to 101 minutes real time. But, It is set to wrap around at
you gamestage of 50 which is wandering stage 64 at your stage 49, so at 50 you get
ZombieBearsGroup. then start over.

Wandering hordes don't spawn until 28 hours into the game. So first is approx 11:am day 2.
There are 18ish to 21ish variations for the wandering horde. Horde variant number 1 is used
until you gamestage 5, except if you get one at gamestage 2 which will be variant 2.
Then they skip numeric sequence, to  gamestage 64 or 82, it's a bit inconsistent. There are
2 wandering horde designations Wandering horde, and Fwanderinghorde. I guess two people

two trains of thought.  Either way both are used.

A little slight of hand, Spawn in approx 64 meters from your location, 85% a chunk away.
Mainly because they are chunk governed, this is to make it feel like they are actually coming
from somewhere, and also to avoid getting stuck.

Here are the specials:              The Format             yourgamestage/theentity group

15/ZombieBikerBarGroup  20/ZombieDogGroup  24/ZombieGhostTownGroup   27/VultureGroup
34/ZombieDogGroup  38/ZombieAnimalsGroup  41/WolfPack  44/ZombieSoldierGroup
47/VultureGroup  50/ZombieBearsGroup.

Time wise it would probably be different depending on how many minutes your day is. 100 minutes for me,

is 20 hours.  At 60min its 40 hours

I've been playing this game since Alpha 7 and as far as I can tell these wandering hordes are purely by chance.

A group of wandering bunnies or deer or buzzards would be a fantastic addition to the game. Especially if they're running from something big and nasty that's chasing them.

Only an anecdote, but I once got wolves led by a dire on day 1 when I walked onto the grounds of the Mortician. So I expect that skull level has an effect.

They generally pass by the player around 40 blocks away so if you have feral mode activated then you are more likely to witness them regularly as they will sense you and turn towards you. Without feral sense activated if you don't notice them and get their attention they are likely to just keep moving with neither of you even knowing. That is more common in the early days when the hordes are small and less common later when they are larger as you will not fail to notice them. If you want them to come to you more often then turn on feral mode. I always play feral mode day and sometimes feral mode all.

Not sure on that one. I've seen the wolfpack with the dire wolves run around in a completely empty area in the forest. No POI, so no skulls.

Unfortunately I do not remember what day it was. I do remember that the POI they did run to was only T1 or 2 at most.
