PC V3.0 Dead Hot Summer Dev Diary

There is no other feature that I think would more quickly result in me disabling bandits on day one of their availability.
Exactly! This is not RUST. Of course, if TFP add settings to turn off some bandits features, then it's all good as you can customize exactly how you want to play.

I wouldn't mind bandit raiding if it can be toggled off. There are moments where I feel untouchable so having to protect not just myself but also my loot sounds appealing to me.
"I want bandits" usually means "I want the fantasy of a hostile human faction out there" — but the moment that faction can actually reach into your base and take something permanent, the appeal flips from "cool, danger" to "wait, no, not my stuff."
A bandit that can't take anything from you by turning it off isn't really a bandit, it's a zombie with a gun skin.
The entire reason "bandit" implies something scarier than "zombie" is that bandits are supposed to be motivated — they want your loot, they'll go get it. Strip that out and you've built an NPC faction with no reason to exist that a reskinned feral horde didn't already cover.

That said, I don't think TFP's actually cornered into all-or-nothing here, even if you are thinking about it wrong by flipping them off after asking for them over the years.

Doesn't make it less funny watching people ask for danger and then ask for the danger to be optional in the same breath, though.

I figure most people won't enjoy them if they can't have options. I would be fine with it, personally, but not everyone wants to be raided.

100% and for sure i get that, Thing is most of people who have been begging tfp to add bandits for many years do they really want something raiding them? That really has to put TFP in a bind on their decision to release them because if you think about the majority of people asking for them really dont want a bandit in their true definition raiding them- than why add them? Who knows- maybe thats part of the reason bandits still havent been added after a decade.

Bandits weren't added because they weren't done and they needed to add more foundation with other features and mechanics before adding bandits in order to have bandits work well and not look like a poorly tacked on feature. It has nothing to do with raiding or not raiding. Heh.

Anyhow, many people want bandits. They want new enemies. That doesn't mean they want to have to worry about bandits destroying their base when they aren't there. It's one thing to have them attack while you're there and can defend against them. It's entirely different if you aren't there. It isn't like you can leave people to defend the base all day unless you're playing with other people who are willing to sit around waiting on bandits to *maybe* attack. It certainly isn't a good thing for solo play. As long as it's optional, those who want to have the raids, perhaps because they have a group of players who are willing to have some always at the base to defend it, can have raids. And the majority of players won't have to deal with that. This isn't a matter of difficulty. Bandits taking things or destroying your base while you're in the middle of a quest isn't increased difficulty... it's just an annoyance with no benefit.

I think the majority of people would turn raids off unless they have people in their group who will protect the base all the time or just want to try it out. That has nothing to do with whether or not people want bandits. Bandits are new enemies. They have new mechanics. They are presumably more challenging than zombies. All of these things are reasons many people want bandits. Of course, there are also people like me who play this game for the zombies and have no interest in bandits or any other human enemies. I'll play other games for that. I play this game for zombies. So I would want to be able to disable bandits entirely. I'm willing to give them a chance, but I really don't think I'll have any interest in them. I'd much rather see more zombie enemies than human ones. So there are people who want them, people who don't really care, and people who don't want them. If they are optional, it works for everyone. If raids are optional, those work for everyone. There's nothing wrong with things being optional.

No kidding! I see that the latest_experimental entry was removed so it must be happening very VERY soon!
I laughed when that was asked. Like, I know, but I can't say. 🫢

If my storage can be touched, then no thanks. I am sure there will be settings as many people would be ticked having their stuff taken. There is a reason I have a horde base and a home base.

A lot of players, when they think about bandits, don't think about NPCs that can steal your stuff.

They think about (e.g.) Skyrim bandits or Rimworld bandits.
You either kill them, or they kill you... there are no "stealthy thieves" that come to your base while you're sleeping and steal your stuff.

If they come to you, you're almost certainly dead well BEFORE they hypothetically take some of your stuff.
In that regard is not much different than dying killed by zombies: if you die, you lose part of your stuff.

I don't see what's all the fuss about honestly.

So just because that's what they are in other game they have to be that in 7 Days?

They've talked about a random encounter type system before. What if there's an encounter where you've left your base unoccupied for a while and when coming back you run into a group of bandits that were raiding your stuff and on their way out as you arrive? Not saying I expect something like that, but it could be fun.

I didn't say that. I said that's what most players probably think about when we talk about bandits.
I said that also to calm down those worried about having their stuff stolen while they're away.

I think it would be a very dumb idea to let the game punish the player for "not being there" just because... bandits, don't you agree?
As long as games have existed in history the point has always been to put yourself to the test, yes, but in a fair way.

Again, having bandits target your stuff it's not fun.
Having bandits "look like" they're targeting your stuff, but in reality targeting you, that is the real fun.

What if TFP just made the game roll a dice and have some of your base stuff disappear just because you weren't there?
Is that your version of "fun"?
