PC V2.6 EXP - updated b14

I miss being able to craft a beverage cooler, when they updated the model the option to craft these went the way of the dodo.

It even added a subtle light affect, I made these every chance I got for the added ambience.
Right. But the context for my request for examples was that the person I responded to claimed many things were removed recently for no reason that could be determined. Do you need me to explain why that legacy block is no longer in the game or why the new one wasn’t allowed to be craftable? I can, if the reasons are inexplicable to you. 😉

You've peaked my curiosity

You've peaked my curiosity

Originally, the assets of the game that weren’t from the Unity store were created by painting textures on blocks and also using existing blocks in the game in creative ways—much like how you created a shower using other blocks. When they overhauled all the assets and hired artists to create original models they replaced all their old assets. Many of these new assets look much nicer but are too expensive performance-wise to allow players to craft and place as many as they want whenever they want.

I'm curious about this
You can mod in a recipe to create these things for your own game I believe but the devs have to maintain stability for a wide range of configs and so they decide what can be craftable and what can’t for the unmodded vanilla version.

You could craft them and use them for storage, it cast light as well.
There was a coooler paint option but why use that when you could make the real ones.

Without reverting back to alpha 19 20 maybe 21 🤷‍♂️ I couldn't tell you the alpha number they were in.

Maybe that was before A20 or else I just forgot about it because I can't remember being able to craft them. I was just curious about it since I only remembered the painted option before the new ones. I definitely agree that the new ones should be craftable.

Are you sure that the reason for that specific item is that it can't be crafted due to performance concerns? Or is that just a guess since that's the reason sometimes given for various items in the game not being craftable?

I'll put this out there again, though I've suggested it before.... make a game option that lets people enable crafting of all these decoration blocks (doors, windows, lamps/lights, etc.) that aren't currently possible to craft without a mod. Make enabling it give a popup warning that having it enabled and placing too many may cause performance problems and then leave it to the user or the server admin to decide whether or not to have them enabled. I'm fairly certain that in 95%+ of games, people aren't trying to ruin the game experience by placing so many of certain blocks that the game grinds to a crawl. And if they do accidentally cause that because of enabling it and placing so many blocks, they were warned. For that matter, they could even put up a warning when trying to craft any of these blocks even if there is a game option that enables them so people are reminded that those specific blocks can be a problem. And for reference, for this game option to work, I'd put all items that are an issue into their own category in the same way that dev blocks are in the dev blocks category. If the game option is disabled, simply hide them with the filter just like if you disable the dev blocks in the creative menu. If it's enabled, then show them. It's a very easy option to add. They just need to decide that they want to add the option.

There comes a point where people need to be responsible for their own choices and the devs shouldn't need to protect them from themselves.

They are more protecting themselves and the reputation of their game than they are protecting players. Players who write bad reviews about the game crashing aren’t always kind enough to disclose what they did before the game crashed.

It’s, “This game is garbage because it crashes every 5 minutes and my rig is good enough to play [insert newest AAA game] on Ultra!”

Not, “I crafted and placed 50 beer dispensers to line the inside lip of my base wall top for the cool ambient light it provides despite the warning for enabling that option and my game started crashing every five minutes….oops”

@Roland
I have two curious questions that you may be able to answer.
1 is a serious question the other is kind of funny to me.

From as long as I can remember why is it that any kitchen that has the corner
cabinet, that cabinet has never been empty?

The second why is it that the fastest moving regular zombie is the party girl in heels?
There has to be a story behind that.

Corner cabinet... Hey! Don't tell anyone... Oops! Too late.

The Party Girl has long legs so she walks faster... Some people could say she's a street walker but I like her too much to call her that way. 😁

I don't buy that as a good reason. If someone places a few hundred lights side by side, they're going to have problems, but it's allowed. If someone plants a ton of trees, they're going to have problems. If people use mods that make the game have problems because they don't have a computer that can handle the mod(s) or the mods are just poorly optimized or broken, they have just as much chance of posting about how bad the game is without ever mentioning that they are using mods.

If anything, having these behind a game option means that there will be less chance of accidentally overloading your computer than there is with the items you can already do it with since those aren't locked behind a game option and can just be done. If servers can keep them disabled, most probably will, so a fairly large percentage of players won't be at risk as it is. For the rest, I don't think it's any more of a problem than we have now.

Besides, how many of the decorations/doors/windows/etc. are actually more of a problem than what we currently have? Are the doors that can't be crafted any more resource intensive than the ones we can craft? Maybe a few are, but most probably aren't. What about windows? Likely the same as doors. What about lights that can't be powered and turned on (at least, not without a mod like OCB Light Enabler)? Probably not any worse than what we have now. For those, maybe if they were craftable, TFP would want to make them possible to power so you can turn them on and off, which would be great. If so, then you might have to be concerned about whether or not the lights (when lit) are more resource intensive. But if not, then they likely aren't any worse than what we have now.

Now, if there are some decorations/doors/windows/etc. that really are that much worse for your computer than other things, maybe those can be left off the crafting window. But for everything else, I don't think there is really any good reason not to make them available.
